So is Disney+ going to work on LG TVs, or will they expect us to buy the 2020 model?

Edit: I'm assuming the streaming device offer was thought up by their lawyers. And that the press release says "In time for RWC2019" So maybe given a bit more time, SS will come to pre 2019 LG TVs.

Dingbatt:

Why are TVs from Panasonic, Sony and Samsung capable of running an adequate app despite being years old, yet LG TVs running the most up to date version of WebOS incapable? Surely the problem must be WebOS? Is it so processor inefficient that there is no headroom available to run a streaming app? Obviously not because it runs Netflix, Amazon PV and Lightbox quite happily. Just not enough time and resources put into developing the app. Embarrassing for both Spark Sport and LG.

All the current smart tv OS seem Linux based so they don't even have the Microsoft is different excuse. Hardware is dubious because 2nd tier 2019 models are probably little different to 2018 or 2017 models.

I've heard that LG were keen to have the app on as many TVs as possible, but whoever is actually developing the app must be having issues with their app performance in combo with webOS. Whether this is related to the quality changes SS made or not - I can't understand how the other apps like Netflix can stream 4K HDR without issue, and the TV can easily handle 60/120 frame content natively. Sounds like a development platform issue.

Hey, I still love my 65C8 OLED! I guess it is up to Google to OK the launch of GA on my TV though? For the same reason the current Google Home speakers are all parallel imported. Just get an Apple TV and call it a day.

I’m starting to strongly think about just getting a Apple 4K tv box.
Then I don’t have to ever use TV apps and worry about updates

I’ve got a 5 year old LG ips tv in another room, LG doesnt release any updates for it - and so the version of Netflix that it runs is super outdated. It plays 4K content but the Actual Netflix app looks totally different to the modern app and it’s super laggy and hard to navigate as everything is just text with no pictures

Can the LG magic remote control the Apple TV box?

No.

I have a 2018 TV.

SS launched a RWC app and promised it would work on my specific TV in due course.

Based on that promise, I bought their app in good faith and waited for the promise to be fulfilled.

After I bought it, they said ‘Nah, we’re not going to support that TV now’.

I'll repeat this again, they made no promises. They released a statement stating that they intended to support that TV. If you bought the RWC pass on that then ask for a refund, they will more than accommodating.

So I have a 2018 LG TV purchased this year and hence following the instructions in https://help.sparksport.co.nz/device-support/watching-on-lg-tv I went to Harvey Norman to receive an eligible supplementary device. However they knew nothing of it, said it should work fine in the browser, took my number to call me later, and sent me away.

I use the magic remote to control my Apple TV (buttons only, not the pointer). Might depend on your TV - as far as I know, all the webos TVs have the same Netflix UI, maybe yours is just too old. Ultimately Netflix releases the updates not LG anyway.

I've got 2 LG tv's - a 2019 C9 and a pretty old something, I don't remember the model - it doesn't have a magic remote, that one has a standard big remote with a bazillion buttons - it is a 3D tv though so I can watch 3D movies on that one

Just to clarify. The release I’m referring to is the one released yesterday, stating the App won’t be available in time for the RWC 2019.

Edit: Interestingly enough, I have just received a email from Spark Sport outlining their inability to provide an App for pre 2019 LG TVs “for the foreseeable future”.

Im glad I have been advising clients recently not to buy LG TVs.

Folk who are saying about netflix 4k no trouble streaming so why cannot SS, I think there is a fair bit of difference between what SS is asking and most material on Netflix that will not be at 50/60fps and has the benifit of non real time multipass coding.
