If Netflix opens up their app for our part of the world, that will enable it on pretty much any smart TV or connected bluray player p, plus ofcourse games consoles, Apple tv etc.

Lightbox are what, ipad air played to Apple tv, PS3 and samsung TVs or laptop connected via hdmi (happy to be corrected, haven't kept up with their app support).

Average home users, 1st timers on streaming...hardly. Expecting them to plug the TV into a Laptop or PC just for this is a bit stupid.
Sure, theres not much that can be done for TV's that simply will never work, and its not reasonable to expect support for every Smart TV ever made.

Adding xbox360 & xboxone would have been high priority I would have thought. ???
And adding full support for most Androids , not just the latest Samsungs.

The Roku in NZ is currently being used by innovators and early adopters but as *we* talk to our friends and colleagues more and more people will start adopting this technology. I have convinced 3 people to buy a Roku in the last month alone.

You make a good point about building for what NZers are currently using but I think future technologies need to be accounted for sooner than later.

xbox is the biggest missing at the moment when it comes to numbers of devices available in NZ I would think, but other than that, yes, between ipad, ps3, ps4, samsung smart tv, samsung tablets that does cover the majority of the population who might conceivably use a streaming video service. (I think even just the playstations (3+4) would account for 3-400k households)

And bear in mind that even Netflix, with all those devices, still sees a very large proportion of viewing come via browser.

I can't see a case for the Roku before the xbox, or the AppleTV, or other brands of SmartTV or Android Tabs.

WDTV maybe, I don't know how many of them people have, but they are at least available in NZ.

I can see a case for Lightbox branding their own Roku and selling it (isn't there a UK service that does this?), but that must be way down the track.

myopinion: Netflix is the leader because it understood that the app needs to be on every device. It is a massive advantage and I can't see Lightbox/Quickflix competing in the long run, without doing this.

To quote above "They need to get Chromecast going. They need to get Xbox going. They need an App for AppleTV" etc etc.

Agree on the last part about adding xbox etc, but my point is that it doesn't really need to be on every device. It needs to be on devices that people have.

Being on a device that virtually nobody owns in NZ is only a very very tiny advantage. (and, assuming you have to spend money developing the app, it would actually be a disadvantage because of the opportunity cost)

Take Roku for example. No major store in NZ stocks it AFAIK, and it can only be imported. So I'd be pretty surprised if there were more than 2,000 Roku boxes in NZ households (vs the hundreds of thousands of PS3s and Samsung Smart Tvs)
So the advantage for any service in NZ being on Roku is only relevant for those 2,000 houses. And not really relevant for anybody else. (and most of them will already have a Netflix USA subscription too)
People don't really care if a service is available on a device they don't own.

(and note that quickflix actually has a pretty good range of devices, but because the content is so weak they are doing terribly.)

Also most of their content is in SD only is the main reason I only use them for the Subscription TV programs rather than movies..

and that was back in April 2011, almost 4 years ago, when Ps3s were a lot more expensive, and before PS4 even launched.

(and yes, selling consoles doesn't equate exactly to how many active, but it gives you an idea)

Yeah chromecast (~$60) would be nice, but a second hand ps3 is really not that expensive at all (about the same as an apple TV actually, and it doubles as a blu-ray and gaming console as a bonus, even if you don't want that, you might do in the future)

To be fair, I have not tried Lightbox with one of these BD players, but it does run SmartHub, and it is this years model. It *should* go.
