StarBlazer: So here's a technical query for all the network Ninjas out there.

Will PLP have an agreement somewhere that guarantees them enough bandwidth to stream the content of 'x' number of live games from the UK to the CDN in NZ. I know once it's here, it's a domestic issue but let's say 10+ games live at 5Mbps over the SC Cable which we all know can be a bottleneck.

Which leads to the next question, how live will live actually be? A couple of seconds delay or closer to a minute because they will have to receive, compress (for the different bandwidths) and store the data for distribution.

It doesn't really make any difference to me - just curious.

Sorry, I'm not a network Ninja and others know the detail better than me but starting with the second question - the NFL forums suggest that around one minute delay is typical which gives plenty of time for encoding, processing and distribution (including user buffering). Users were complaining when the delay rose to 90 seconds. PLP might be less or more - time will tell.

I would be very disappointed if they could not have 30 Mbps (10 x current offering) into NZ, especially as it isn't time critical (as above). These are separate streams and UFB users on Geekzone forums suggest 2-3 MB/s (well over 3 Mbps) are typically achieved speeds from sources like the US. If PLP are constrained by SC Cable they aren't doing it right.

If it isn't working I suspect it isn't a late enough version. The help for the PS3 at http://faq.en.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9199/~/flash-player-on-ps3 says "With system software version 2.50 onwards, the PS3 system’s Internet browser supports Adobe® Flash® Player 9." Unfortunately the PLP FAQ says minimum of "Macromedia Flash Player 10.1" which isn't looking good for you.

PLP only claim to support PC/MAC and IOS/Android (soon) and the native PS3 app doesn't seem on the short term radar.

Got another email from the TAB:

"Hi Jarrod,
You may have already got an email about the promo but if not here is some information. I have also included some FAQ’s – please note that they are written from the perspective of a Helpdesk operator so may sound a little strange.

The TAB has formed a partnership with premierleaguepass.com – the new home of the English Premier League. A benefit we have negotiated is a 15% discount on the ‘Season Pass Basic’ package (normally $149.90) for account customers.

An email has gone out to all of our account customers who have an email address and have opted into receiving promotional content. The emails have a unique code for each customer that they can use when subscribing to the service to receive the discount. The promotion period begins on Thursday 8th August and ends on Monday 30 September, 2013. There is a limit of one pass per customer.

Below are some FAQ’s:

I’m an account customer. Why didn’t I receive the premierleaguepass.com offer?
It is likely that the account customer has chosen not to receive promotional message from the TAB, has unsubscribed from receiving email, has not provided an email address or we have the wrong email details. If the customer is happy to provide a relevant email address and subscribe to receiving promotional messages, then we can extend the offer to them.

Once their details have been updated please e mail our Sponsorship manager Kurt Tyson with the account number and the customer’s e mail address and he will organise a code for them.

Unfortunately not, however as a goodwill gesture TAB will add $20 to your account to help offset the discount value.

Please check that the customer has an account that was opened prior to 8 August 2013, then e mail Kurt the account number and the customer’s e mail address and he will check their details with premierleaguepass.com. Once confirmed as a subscriber Kurt will arrange the $20 deposit.

How can I access the Terms and Conditions for this promotion?
I can send a copy to you via e mail.

Please check the customer’s e mail address and send them the PDF of the Ts & Cs (found at the link above).

Who do I contact if there is an issue with the code you’ve sent me?

There may be a handful of customers that ask why we’re not offering live in play betting during EPL games this season when we have in the past. The reason is that there is a delay in the broadcast from the actual match (up to a minute), which makes offering live in play betting too risky for the customer and TAB.

PremierLeaguePass say this in their FAQ:

I just purchased a subscription, but forgot to enter a promo code. Can I still redeem it?

To process a promo code for a missed promotion, please contact customer support. You can:

• Or chat with a customer service representative here

Might not work but can't hurt to try :) .

Sommet updated their cover to a Liverpool picture, pretty strong clue their.
Also looking at the sky sport schedule for Sunday arvo, I can't imagine that they'll have any games on before 6pm. They've got live itm cup, nrl, basketball and UFC. They may be able to squeeze a game in at 3 after the UFC and before an nrl game.

Having tested both PLP and Al Jazeera sports online iam going to go for Al Jazeera sports this season they have increased the quality massively over the last few days especially since they added HD 1 - 6 not to mention there offering far more than just premier league football and its 135 US Dollar plus the cost of the smart dns service,for me the average stream quality is 3 mbps and it looks pretty good on my 42 inch tv.The only thing im not sure about is the English Commentary on the premier league games,at the moment iam watching England Under 21 V Scotland U21 and Al Jazeera is 12 seconds behind bt sports satellite coverage.

Coliseum sell PLP as a service though an agreement by buying the rights to
broadcast EPL games in NZ. They use NeuLion ( the link at the bottom of the
website) to deliver the service to the enduser though their services and partnerships.
NeuLion have the Premier League as a customer ( they have many others as we’ve
seen) and use it's partners to help encode, display, store and deliver the
content i.e Apple, Samsung, Cisco,
Akamai, Limelight etc etc. ( check out their website)

This is an OTT service and so they have not invested in any hardware here in
NZ. They rely on the partners and RSP's networks to provide the connectivity
and store the video content. It will be interesting to See how the RSP's
CDN's cope with the VOD services, as the Live streaming should be out of hours
and not be constrained by SX unless the RSP has a straw instead of a sewer
pipe.... Will it be sourced from the US, AU or locally in NZ !!!!

That's how it's going to work and results will vary depending upon RSP's
networks. We'll soon find out this weekend I suppose :)

You can't. It's only on terrestrial freeview. Will be streaming on their site soon.
