Hey Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice, I've bought 2 amazon fire TV sticks (the alexa remote ones) to give to my parents/inlaws for christmas so they can watch NZ netflix (chromecast too hard with phone remote).

Since i'm going to have to support the devices should I add them to my amazon account or create separate amazon accounts for them?

They will use my netflix account but my amazon account has a couple of echos and home automation stuff so I don't want them to have access to that.

What the best way to set this up?

No but you can connect their account to IFTTT and say "Alexa trigger" plus a command and have that command do something (assuming the smart home can be connected to IFTTT as well). I used this with Philips Hue lights.

anyway to add local channels to it? So you wont have to keep switching to different HDMI ports to get back to tv

Amazon has now released both the Silk Browser and the Firefox 1.0 for its Amazon Fire TV.

"Starting today, all Amazon Fire TV customers will be able to browse the web on their TV. With Fire TV, customers already have access to more than 500,000 movies and TV episodes, and tens of thousands of apps, channels and Alexa skills. Now with the Firefox and Silk browsers, customers can access the World Wide Web including popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Reddit, as well as local and international news sites, video sharing services, cloud photo sites, and other social news, sports, and entertainment content."

Is this so you can run YouTube after 1/1/18?
I have smart YouTube 4k loaded through Aptoide tv and it will work after the block.

Just a dumb question here, does this mean i will be able to watch for instance Choice TV OnDemand offerings via the new browser?

I would recommend puffin tv as a browser. Easily adds tvnz on demand services and has a mouse too

Up till now i had been using a phone to cast to a Chromecast for YT but yesterday I tried out using the Silk browser on the 4K Firestick. That's not a bad experience.

I guess my main issues with the Firestick are its remote which is proprietary so you need to get use one around together with a universal Harmony I also use. And given the size of the Firestick remote, it's easily lost :-(

I also installed the Plex client to see how that would compare with my current Plex client, a Pi3. It seems to work okay until I noticed that my AVR was showing DD+ audio for a DTS track. Some googling revealed the Firestick cannot pass DTS audio through so asks the Plex server to transcode to DD+. So that's not going to work so back to my Pi client which can pass through DTS to the AVR.

I've found that because the AFTV Stick is plugged into an HDMI port my TV's remote works it just fine. TV is an old (2011 model) Sony KDL-46EX720.

That's CEC I guess? My situation is my Firestick is plugged into an HDMI switch and then into an AVR so I can get 5.1 DD+audio from it over my home theatre system. That seems to strip out the CEC commands.
