sen8or: Will people happily consume more than 1 provider?
Netflix + lightbox +/- $30 vs skytv at >$48 it's still very good value
trig42:bagheera:Samsung BD-H5500 will do it: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=2554620BigPipeNZ:MileHighKiwi:BigPipeNZ:
Take Roku for example. No major store in NZ stocks it AFAIK, and it can only be imported.
An interesting development in recent weeks is that Amazon are now shipping the Roku directly to NZ. When I purchased mine 6 months ago I had to use YouShop. I wonder how long until we see a retailer selling it here?
The Roku in NZ is currently being used by innovators and early adopters but as *we* talk to our friends and colleagues more and more people will start adopting this technology. I have convinced 3 people to buy a Roku in the last month alone.
You make a good point about building for what NZers are currently using but I think future technologies need to be accounted for sooner than later.
sure, but which would you prioritise? Devices you know that Nzers already have, or devices they might buy in the future?
The one thing that light box need now that it does not have is a cheapish box that you plug into your TV and give you light box. My brother ask me what his option was to get it to his tv, best option would be currently a ps3, but don't want a gaming box. Happy to pay for a apple TV tho.
He ended up going OK no light box then, even tho it free as he a xtra user
from $148. Plays Blurays too (and, will do TVNZ and TV3 ondemand).

Samsung player needs to have the real smart hub I don't think the 5500 will do it
This one will http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=2554619
Happy to be corrected if I am wrong

Heck, even Netflix plus lightbox plus neon is about the same price as simply sky basic, but has so many reasons to prefer it.

If only there was a cheap way to stream the Rugby (I'd really only want the internationals, but S15 and NPC would be fine too). And no, Sky, $299 for a season of S15 is not cheap.
I will investigate if there are overseas sources for streaming, that UnoTelly can help me with.

Pretty sure it has full SmartHub - UK Version has Netflix advertised (and iPlayer)
NZ Version has SmartHub: http://www.samsung.com/nz/consumer/tv-audio-video/blu-ray-player/blu-ray-player/BD-H5500/XY With 'Hundreds' of great Apps :0

For Rugby Union http://www.rugby.livesport.tv/
For NRL Rugby League http://new.livestream.com/nrl
I forgot to add both will require Unotelly or similar services.
nathan:
The cheapest way is just to stop watching the live 30 men chasing a leather ball thing for 80 minutes.
Watch it delayed, go to a mates house, read it in the paper the next day
The hardest thing was figuring out common ground of what to talk about with colleagues etc on a Monday
BigPipeNZ:
Yeah chromecast (~$60) would be nice, but a second hand ps3 is really not that expensive at all (about the same as an apple TV actually, and it doubles as a blu-ray and gaming console as a bonus, even if you don't want that, you might do in the future)
e.g. http://www.trademe.co.nz/gaming/playstation-3/consoles/auction-841862485.htm $140 buy now.
jonathan18: Given the date that Netflix launches in NZ is getting close, witnessed by the publicity machine ramping up (eg John Drinnan's column in today's Herald), do we know how any of the DNS services and local ISPs offering 'global mode' will allow users to manage the selection of NZ versus overseas-located Netflix services?
Although it won't impact me (as a user of a DNS service), what will happen to global mode users?
I imagine it will be easier for DNS services, given they already offer the ability for users to select regions - will it be as easy as them adding "New Zealand" as a supported region? If so, has any company announced its plans?
I can see one advantage of this for those sticking with a US-based Netflix account would be access to NZ-specific content (if there's anything unique), but will it also provide a better connection, in that it will source content from NZ-located servers?

NonprayingMantis: I believe that the region you use is irrelevant in terms of where the content is stored. i.e. if you watch breaking bad on NZ Netflix it will pull it from NZ servers. If you watch it on USA Netflix from NZ, it will still pull it from NZ servers.
