empacher48:

I guess if Sky does collapse, there is going to be a proportion of NZers who are going to be left behind when it comes to entertainment.

They are already have been for anything other than sport and reality garbage... and HBO, but how long will they accept pennies on the dollar from Sky when they can quite cheaply offer HBO Now direct?

empacher48:

But for those that don’t have it, it is their choice not to have it. They have the choice whether or not to pay for it.

These people I’m talking about have no choice anymore. They can’t whistle up the hundreds of thousands of dollars to run a fibre line to their place, nor will they ever have rural broadband anywhere close to where they need it.

So what will their options be when Sky goes?

The loss of broadcast TV will greatly strengthen the case for more government investment in rural broadband. And what of Project Kuiper?

surfisup1000:

Also, Spark must offer an installation service. Too many customers rely on dodgy old standard wifi, or out of range wifi.

The gold standard install for TV over fibre (DSL similar) would be ONT -> Cat6/5e -> ISP router -> cat6/5e -> TV/certified smart media device

Agree. To their credit Chorus suggest that people put the ONT behind the TV.

How is broadcast TV lost? Sky going bust leaving rural people stranded?

Freeview offers a satellite service does it not?

If you are rural and can't get terrestrial Freeview (and Sky disappears), I imagine it could be relevant.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Sky is apparently a monopoly, and everyone hates Sky, and apparently they are toast, so assume Sky disappears. So Freeview satellite is left. Yay might need to ask someone to pay them to go HD, or the users pay for that

Only just saw this as overseas at moment.

No one has really talked about how popular the content spark has got will be.

I am not the biggest fan of T20 but I prefer the big bash over the nz super smash.

And if there is timing clash between rugby and cricket which will people go for.

And sometimes the Australian cricket on at same time is better

No, you're totally right.  I just made this exact same comment (or close enough) on another Forum.  I'm a huge cricket fan and while I'll miss seeing a domestic test or ODI on Sky, Super Smash is sadly pretty amateurish. Not many cricket fans I know bother with it.  In fact I wonder if any one actually watches it?  Almost no one turns out for the game.

International cricket, The Big Bash, the IPL, the T20 world cup next year, Ashes, ODI World Cup is still with Sky.  In other words, all the good stuff.

Yes.

The other thing will be how they price it. Up the monthly sub or as a separate package. And if a separate package how cater for a test or odi that has lots of rain.

Plus sometimes nz cricket has a year of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which might not get a great uptake.

How Spark prices it? Do you think they will increase the sub from $20, or make it seperate like RWC? Did they do that when they added the other sports? Its a package. Sky doesnt do that either

No one goes to the games because the coverage is behind Sky's paywall. Back in the early 90s the domestic 50 over competition was on TV1. Most games had a good turn out and finals/semis were usually sold out. Then Sky won the rights and people stopped following the domestic competitions. Match day attendance plummeted. I think the new deal which puts about a third of the domestic T20s on TVNZ will lead to more people turning out to the games.

I think you partially right. I remember back then the top 15 NZ players mostly played in those competitions. Can always remember Canterbury games with Cairns, Astle, Mcmillian, Fleming, Harris, Bond, Martin etc on the 26th of December or 27th. And the big finals in last week or so of January.

Now you only get to see a top player if on injury rehab or out of form. And in late December early January, it is hit and miss cricket with no NZ players and 2nd tier international players.

It will be interesting if they paid a lot for this I am betting that it won't be $20 a month anymore.

On the domestic thing mentioned above by Varkk, rubbish about numbers dwindling because sky got it, numbers have dwindled because NZ domestic cricket doesn't have black caps (or overseas professionals) playing in it. Nobody wants to go down and watch amatuer players play in a crappy domestic competition.

Nine australia when it had the rights used to stop FTA coverage in the city where ODI's were played in to force people to go to the game. If you wanted to watch it in Sydney or Melbourne you had to go buy a ticket, when it sold out they put it on free to air. The BBL is a perfect example of bringing back the crowds, Big players, overseas professionals, fantastic added entertainment and average crowds are 20 to 30k. in NZ last year you'd be lucky to get 3k

Spark has about 20% the viewership Sky has and you think thats going to grow cricket in NZ?

Sky Boss describes brutal cricket fight

Looked like an interesting shareholders meeting.

Some questions from the floor like "how to compete with someone that can afford a loss?"

And there was mention of maybe forming partnerships with more then Vodafone.

And also possibly trying to take Spark on in their own turf, I’d be surprised if Sky starts up their own ISP.
