Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if anyone uses the US iTunes store for video content as well as Netflix. My main reason for going for the US iTunes store is that there would be more current TV series' compared to Netflix (at a fee but that's ok) but is there any difference here? To anyone that uses both services side by side what do you think are the pros and cons of having both? I feel if I had to go it alone with one service, it would be Netflix.

I have investigated Hulu Plus but that does not seem to offer too much difference to what Netflix would offer me because of the restrictions in place with shows expiring and some series' not having the last 3-4 season which is annoying.

I really want HBO Go but that is unlikely to ever make it here... Cry

US iTunes is easier as you don't have to use a VPN. You just need to use US iTunes gift cards to reload your account. You can buy those from http://www.buyfrompowerseller.com/ using Paypal. The iTunes cards are priced ok, but the other options there (buying prepaid credit cards) are a bit expensive though.

You need to create an iTunes US account first.

I have good experience with http://www.itunescards4u.com/ that is slightly cheaper than the one Mauricio mentioned.

First time you shop they take a little time to check you out, then after that you will get the giftcards right after you buy.

I use a oneSmart card to fund my US iTunes account - from there my netflix subscription is taken from itunes (I did the same with hulu when I was a member)- means my credit card is only in one place...and if the onesmart ever stops working I can switch to gift cards.

I didn't know you could pay for Netflix from iTunes... I use my oneSmart card directly with Netflix.

Definitely much easier to use iTunes (US) account to subscribe to NetFlix and Hulu.

Ah, right, I don't have an Apple TV. Up till about 2 months ago we didn't have a 720p-capable TV. (Old one does 1080i only, and the G2+ Apple TVs only do 720p. Grrrrrr).

Can you do it in iTunes for Mac?

Bugger.

Oh well, when the Mac Mini eventually expires, I will replace it with this or whatever is the current one at the time. $86 for a quad-core 1.6GHz ARM with 2GB RAM, running a more or less up-to-date Android. Truly we live in the future.

Thank you for your replies.

I guess what I'm asking is if you have Netflix do you see extra value in having US iTunes? I believe all TV shows on iTunes you have to buy rather than subscribe?

time to instant watch is about 3 - 6 months after itunes.

I'd get the us itunes and then subscribe to netflix - it doesn't cost you anything to have the itunes account and not use it.

Cool this is kind of what I was thinking - I think I will do that and then I'll have the option to buy a movie if I really must. Like you said, it doesn't cost anything.

You should also investigate Requiem, when you do buy a movie. But be aware it only works up to iTunes 9 so you may need a VM or something similar to run an old iTunes in. That also limits you to 720 and stereo sound, so buying it and then obtaining a non-DRM-infected version from ... somewhere else ... remains the best option in most cases.

I'm trying to buy some Apple accessories from the US store, I've got my reship.com address set as the delivery address.

Trying to use my New Zealand credit card - no go. I'm assuming this is because the "billing address" I've set (my reship.com one) is US whereas my credit card is NZ.

Has anyone had success with the OneSmart card in this area?

I didn't get a response to this over the weekend.

I had popped some $$ onto my OneSmart card on Friday evening which cleared this morning.

I then moved the required funds into the "US" wallet.

Happy to report - success buying from the US Apple Store online whereas my regular BNZ CC failed (I assume due to a mismatch of billing address).

I'm using Reship to get the goods back into NZ.

Hopefully this helps someone googling in the future.
