After all the hype in the papers and on the TV news, I thought I would give this product a try.

So, as my local New World supermarket is listed as one of the stockists, I when there this morning.

But where in the store is it?????

I checked the meat section - its not meat, but is would appeal to someone buying meat - NOT THERE!

I checked the chill cabinet with the diary products as I don't know if this product needs to be kept chilled - NOT THERE

I checked the fruit & veggies section as it could be considered a 'fresh' item - NOT THERE

I checked the ordinary shelves where the tins and packets are kept - NOT THERE

It then occurred to me that they simply could be out-of-stock, so I double checked the above places for any serious gaps in the shelving - STILL NOT THERE.

Has any one seen this product on sale and can tell me which section of the store to check the next time?

Even better, what is it like and would they buy it again????

By the way, I didn't have my wife with me so it would be impossible to ask a member of staff where this product could be found....

Their FAQ states:

"Sunfed products are snap frozen to lock in all the goodness. This helps ensure our products remain 100% preservative free. So whilst you can find Sunfed Chicken Free Chicken in supermarket freezers, it is not available for mail orders as that would require refrigerated shipping."

So I would guess they are in the frozen section, perhaps next to Quorn etc. I had never heard of these so I might see if I can find them next time I'm in the Countdown near me that supposedly stocks them.

We buy it from New World. I really like it, its a product that you need to fry and not fiddle too much with when you are frying it. So fry on both sides and its done.

Oh, your question :D

You should find it in the same freezer section where you will find other vegetarian "meats". At our New World its in the long freezers (these types)

Oh, trust me. Everything does NOT taste like chicken. Some of those soy products... But this one is actually really good and chicken-y. (And not another soy "meat" product).

I would like to thank the Poultry Industry Association of NZ for invoking the Streisand effect, having learned of this product reading of the recent news story that PIANZ has laid a complaint with the Commerce Commission. Finally tried it on the weekend. It was rather nice, I'll buy it again occasionally.

As a vegetarian I don't like any of the fake meat products I've tried - mostly tofu based. If I wanted to eat meat, I'd eat meat. Fake meat reminds me too much of eating meat, which I don't enjoy any more. Just make your food taste like what it tastes like.

Does this stuff actually have a flavor and texture similar to chicken? Or, ignoring the marketing, is it actually something that tastes good in its own right?

Looks like it's high protein, low carb, low fat. That's a good start.

Err back to the OP - why didn't you just ask someone in-store where the product is? I can think of many things more exciting to do than traversing supermarkets trying to second guess where specific items may/may not be :)

We have been getting ours from Faro in either Green Lane or Grey Lynn - they usually have it in stock.

It is pricey but as a vegetarian for reasons of ethics and environment rather than taste, I really like it! Adds some much needed variety to the Tofu dishes.

We have it in wraps, on pizza and have done a few curries and satays with it in. Yes you can tell it ain't chook, but it is a good facscimile and tastes good in its own right,

Having found where in my local store where this product was hidden, I did purchase two packs with the intention of making a curry... however, with the nice sunny weather we've been eating salad and the odd BBQ.

And with more hot weather being forecast, then these two packs are staying in the freezer.

Decided to ignore the weather and used my two packs of CNC and made a simple curry.

I used the same basic receipt that I always follow for a curry - an onion, a couple of small tomatoes, a jar of curry paste (who has time to make their own paste?) and a litre of chicken stock plus fresh green beans to finish.

I used the CNC (as recommended) straight from the freezer and into a hot wok with a little oil. Fried the CNC (again as recommended) before adding the rest of the ingredients in the same way that I would with real chicken.

So far, everything looked 'normal' and I left the concoction to gently bubble away on the very low flame to reduce the liquid and for the favours to mature .... for about two hours.

And this is when things went a little wrong... the pieces of CNC started to break up and I ended up with a curry that tasted OK but simply didn't look right.

I would best describe the result a CNC ribbons in a curry sauce which isn't a positive image.

Served with boiled rice it tasted fine and was a satisfying meal.

I may try my simple curry receipt again, this time with far less liquid to reduce the time the curry ingredients get to know each other. And possibly dim the lights when I serve it up.

It does tend to "denature" too quickly when cooked in sauce/liquid! We have found that because it is more "porous" than actual meat, you don't need to cook it in the sauce too long as it soaks up the flavours much more quickly than meat.

I would recommend frying it as you did in a seperate pan, doing the sauce for however long you need to in order to maximise flavour and then adding the fried, slightly crisped "not chook" to the sauce right at the end for around 5 minutes.

The faq, from memory, says to fry then add to dishes at the end. May avoid it breaking up.

Any more comments on taste and texture? Sounds good but the name is putting me off, along with the "tastes like chicken" comments.

You are best just trying it! Best description of texture I can think of relative to meat, is sort of like BBQ pulled or shredded pork.
