The Washington Post - WHO study says remdesivir does not cut mortality rate
today
Remdesivir does not appear to have an impact on a coronavirus patient’s chances of survival, the World Health Organization concluded Thursday.
The Gilead Sciences drug touted by President Trump after his visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was one of several repurposed medicines selected for a study of therapeutics for covid-19 in more than 30 countries.
Hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir and interferon regimens also appeared not to reduce the mortality rate or the length of hospital stays for coronavirus patients, according to the WHO’s research, which has not been peer-reviewed.
The study confirms previous research that remdesivir has not effectively reduced the risk of death for coronavirus patients. ...
The WHO on Thursday said the study was the world’s largest randomized control trial on covid-19 therapeutics.

Doesn't surprise me about Remdesivir. If it worked to reduce viral load then maybe it might be useful if given very early on in the infection, given that there seems to be a correlation between initial viral dose and severity. But then you'd need to give it to everybody, which wasn't going to happen for various reasons including cost.
The monoclonal antibody treatment given to the President might work. Regeneron say that they could have 300,000 doses ready "in a few months". Given that there are about 400,000 new cases being confirmed every day (~50,000 in the US alone every day), it seems probably too little / too late.

But a damn good money spinner, all the same.

In July, the company signed a contract with the government for $450 million to supply the treatment.
anyway we might have a historical community case in Tauranga ... https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-suspected-covid-case-at-port-of-tauranga/VFFJZLDPN2ZM6LBWTJ675FUAIY/
didn't someone say repeatedly that community testing has been very low in the weeks preceeding?

Not sure community testing would have made any difference in this case.. its FOB..
It appears most likely that this crew member had Covid-19 some time ago and is no longer infectious. The IVS Merlion arrived into New Zealand waters on October 15 after departing Indonesia on September 24."

Covid-19: 'Major outbreak' at Christchurch isolation facility housing dozens of international fishermen
Media update at 4pm, ~237 russian crew flew in on the first plane to work on Sealord fishing trawlers. Article mentions ~25 likely cases at this stage
Because some bean counter thought "We can't have these fishing vessels doing nothing. Let's bring some hands from Russia. What could possibly go wrong - unless we have to pay for their treatment too..."

I find it incredible that this kind of thing keeps happening. Don't they learn anything from experience? And why the hell are we so dependent on industries that can't employ New Zealanders?

sorry im confused as why this is a big story, isnt this is what is meant to happen?. We have had nearly 60,000 people do the same thing. Fly in, go into isolation for 14 days and if they test positive they stay in Quarantine until cleared. what is different.
Common sense is not as common as you think.

Highly likely they will not be absconding as getting arrested would likely void their visas and imperil they employment...
The crazy kiwis who climb out windows with bedsheets etc can't be expelled for their sins....
