GV27:
This person being a loner is a double-edged sword - less chance of spreading but finding a source...
Introverts rock! Can't be too hard remembering the few places he/she's been I'd say. Genome will be here tomorrow that may point the finger somewhere
She works in High Street.
Mezze is just around the corner. One of the last community cases had lunch there last week or week before? Possibility, I'm sure they're looking into it.
The more worrying thing (apart from her staying at work) is she lives in a apartment building.
tdgeek:
Mandatory masks on PT and cabs etc should be brought in and in the CBD in public. That covers off the slackers, every little bit counts
Slackers = everyone as far as I can tell. I take the ferry and on my particular timetable I am the sole mask wearer.
Still getting people on the ferry coughing and spluttering on their way to work, and not wearing masks. Its driving me nuts.

pretty easy to put the whole apartment building at level 4, popular? not so much.
Common sense is not as common as you think.

The new case became symptomatic on the 9th... so that would fit with a 3-5 day incubation..... either at Mezze, or the liquor store or other possible fomite contact..
Now we just need to see if the genomes match,
"The person had eaten brunch at Mezze Bar on Thursday (5th ) before visiting a Queen St liquor store."
So, this case lives alone in an apartment block, next door to MIQ facility, there was a fire alarm, mingled.
1 Why wasn't the fire alarm drill (if it was a drill) pre planned?
2. Even worse, there is a drill/alarm, you live next door to MIQ, MIQ is now milling around outside, why would anyone mingle with the MIQ people? Or if you are MIQ why would you mingle with citizens? Whichever is the case
Unreal
OMG. So not just tenants from the apartment building at risk, but MIQ 'guests' of varying arrival dates intermingled!
L4 for the apartment block at least? And all MIQ 'guests' surely now need to stay quarantine additional time after this incident?
This plus the lack of proper PPE for staff working in the quarantine facilities ...!

Edit: it appears the file alarm was the week earlier, so a long 7 day incubation might fit..
But the genome should help us a lot... although if it doesn't match anything then I think it could be back to lockdown for Auckland....

Not sure who are the minglers and minglee's (nice word that) but while we have had various escapees, and some leaks that have been tightened up, this episode is totally avoidable, and an unforced error. If I was in MIQ I'd steer WELL clear of citizens and if I was a citizen, vice versa. At its most complex, its basic common sense.
There should have been authorities there (if that was possible. Emergency??) but dont all these people also have their own brains?

I think you answered your own question!

Agreed,
Bbut if anyone in MIQ was positive and then subsequently tested positive, ( MoH should be able to tell us this afternoon) there could be an increased risk of fomite transmission on a guard or hand rail outside they might have touched which then got picked up by our current case who passed after the fire alarm was well over...?
Clearly there is an issue around the management of fire alarms at MIQ facilities.
Given the 24/7 staff on site, I wounder if alarms could be investigated before evacuating the building, hence eliminating the risk of false alarm evacuations (There must be procedures to do this that are used at the likes of events with pyrotechnics etc.)
If it is not realistic to keep people in isolation separate during a genuine fire alarm, then the period of isolation would need to be reset. We kinda have to have a way to keep them separate from the general population though.
freitasm: Another level of stupid for people with symptoms that go out. No sympathy.
At least they did the most important thing right, which was to get tested.
I think it is a bit harsh to call the person stupid. We know nothing of their personal circumstances.
Some employers aren't understanding, or compliant with the law when it comes to staff taking sick leave. Some staff don't have any paid sick leave (for example those who started within 6months, or those who have already used it up). Somebody deciding between going to work sick, or not being able buy food for next week may made decisions that are not in the best interest of the country as a whole.
Realistically NZ lacks the kind of easily accessible wrap around measures that would bee need for a high level of compliance with staying at home sick.Things such as a mini benefit for those with symptoms and no paid sick leave, plus a government backed force to come down on employers that retaliate against those taking sick leave.
That said I see a fair few people with minor respiratory symptoms in public, many at discretionary locations, so even with the above we would have issues.

Yeah, but with a big chunk of the Hotels in Downtown Auckland, there is not really many empty locations nearby you can space out evacuated people (unless you started closing off streets?)
