So many 'It's my choice, they can't do this...' comments on the internets

How quickly they forget they're paying a service which has it's own terms and conditions. And they could also chose to fly, or stay home.

That said, 'aviation expert' on Project tonight, said they don't have a legal leg to stand on unless its govt mandated. So we'll see how that floats. Or rather, stirs them up some more.

Batman:

I read somewhere Scott Morrison has said he will try to make the *vaccine "as mandatory as possible" to Australians!

He did qualify the mandatoriness of vaccines would be one that is proven effective

He made that comment on a radio interview and it was taken somewhat out of context - he clarified afterwards, and it's been made pretty clear since that it will not be compulsory to get the vaccine in Australia.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-suspected-case-visited-an-auckland-paint-shop/SS65KLSK3PEV7JZDD2R5IWIRDQ/

Is this a community transmission case or another case of Covid being discovered in China with a New Zealand connection like the recent "discovery" of Covid on meat products from New Zealand?

Its interesting that a Govt can mandate that we stop at red lights, put us in jail if we break a law, tell us we are in lockdown and must stay home, but wont make us take a vaccine that will protect others lives and avoid more forced lockdowns.

The reason was given a few months ago.

Politicians said making the vaccine mandatory would only serve to promote rebellion and feed suspicion.

I guess that's why our lockdowns were voluntary. No fines, etc.

Just watching NBC Live... More than four million Americans went through airports since Friday - and it's still Sunday US timezone now.

One American dies every minute of COVID. And field hospitals are reopening...

refuse to be vaccinated.
Its simple

Give the vax to those in NZ who want it. There wont be enough for every one regardless .
And we'll need 6/12 month booster shots , making it harder to keep us all vax'ed .

if you refuse, who cares. Someone else will be more than willing to take that vax.
Those Un-vaccinated will soon find thier choice restricts travel , job prospects etc .

NZ will be so far down the list of countries to get the vax , its a moot point .
the vax's will go to countries where covid is out of control before countries that don't NEED it (NZ)

Doesn't work that way. To achieve herd immunity, there has to be a high rate of vaccination. Otherwise the virus stays in the community forever and NZ can never relax its border controls. Goodbye international tourism, most travel overseas, and life as you knew it.

The vaccine will go to those that can afford it, it won't matter how out of control Covid is. An unfortunate fact of life.

If it's offered, then refusing to accept the vaccine isn't smart either for your own health or for public health.  It'll be rolled out in a coordinated sequence in NZ.

Whether or not booster shots will be needed and if so - how often - isn't known.  I'd wager it'll be a lot longer than 6 months or a year though.  Even if protection drops, that's not to say it's not working to reduce severity of symptoms if you do get infected.  Kids seem to have some "natural" immunity, possibly some adults do too.  Possibly cross-immunity from past infection with other coronaviruses, possibly something else.  Time will tell.  Even when approved and in general use, "phase 4" trials on the vaccines will continue for years.

It'll be interesting to see what happens "next time" a highly contagious lethal disease appears.  I'd expect or hope international travel bans to be implemented very fast and very hard.  OTOH maybe hubris will be the problem - "it took less than a year to make a C-19 vaccine - so don't worry about it". That could be a fatal mistake.

On a more positive note, the $$$ and effort put in to C-19 vaccine research, development of monoclonal AB treatments, mRNA vaccines is good news.  What's been learned has implications for developing vaccines and treatments for other diseases.

Moderna vax $30us a pop
Oxford AZ - US 3 - 5 (presumably 3 for those who are less able to afford)
Presumably the Chinese vax even cheaper I heard but I'll look for it later

So based on that should be ok. The cost of not buying it is far worse

We're fortunate in New Zealand that we can afford it, unlike Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Myanmar.

It'll be interesting to see what North Korea will do, as they are literally the poorest country in Asia.

It could be the last straw, and cause an uprising.

Asia Times: Covid-19 unleashes new wave of North Korean refugees

...Pyongyang has not confirmed a single case of Covid-19, which has swept the rest of the world since it first emerged in China almost a year ago. Starting last month, state media has published articles saying that the world is looking at North Korea with “envy and shock” at the country’s handling of the virus crisis.

In early October, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared before a huge crowd thanking them for being “in good health” and without anyone “having fallen victim to the malignant virus.”

But after that speech, state media sent mixed messages over a seemingly new mask-wearing policy and warnings that “yellow clouds” which blow in from China may carry the virus. Moreover, thousands were tested after an October 10 military parade in Pyongyang to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party....
