Batman: Question - this strain seem to test positive after a longer incubation time?

It does seem to be a long time without symptoms before becoming positive.

As one of the few countries with periods of no covid, we may be one of the few places to witness behaviour of the sh!tshow cocktail the USA and UK have brewed up from their incompetence.

In any event, we seem to have also had some very stupid behaviour here...... people are dumb.

Geektastic: Get blinking well vaccinating people.

Why are we being so farking slow?!

Because the countries run by morons that have brewed up the variants, have got themselves in the queue first due to the balls up they have been making.

They're also probably happy to throw money at the firms to get the vaccines first too.

How hard is it to follow government advice which has been solid and sound since the very first case.

Geektastic: Get blinking well vaccinating people.

Why are we being so farking slow?!

1. Because we don't have lots of people dying from Covid-19, There was no justification for an emergency authorization, and normal approval only came through a few weeks ago.

2. We don't have enough Covid-19 in the community (or a willingness to give up our populations confidentiality) to be science experiment like Israel.

3. Ethically as a rich country with minimal Covid-19, Offering a large amount of money to be at the front of the queue isn't good, and it's would be a bad look for us. Taking 5m courses of vaccination when supply is tight that would have otherwise gone to a hotspot like the UK or USA would literally mean lots of people die.

4. We don't have onshore vaccination manufacture currently. Being too aggressive could risk stimulating vaccine nationalization which would be to our determent.

Reality is we can deal with this outbreak as we have done with prior ourbreaks, and eliminate the virus from our community. It just sucks that the route to do that is inconvenient and economically expensive.

Good news is that Pfizer is delivering quicker than the Ministry of Health had listed a couple of months ago. First doses were expected in Quarter 2 (April onwards), yet it is February, and we have taken delivery of 130,000 odd doses...

My guess is that a country like the USA hasn't been able to take delivery of all the does it had on order (Vaccination program going slower than expected, ultra cold freezers full? Weather related one off event?), so they have started filling our order sooner. Alternatively Pfizer may be trying to win more business from us, knowing they have one of the best vaccines on the market, we can easily afford their relatively high price, and we only ordered 750k courses for our 5m population.

Sigh. Idiots not able to follow instructions.
Somehow managed to get through the wedding last Saturday and honeymoon this week before the levels went up again. Flew into Auckland, rented a car and went to Coromandel for the week. Landed back in Wellington at 9.10 tonight to hear the news of a few minutes earlier. Only time spent in Auckland was at Dressmart this afternoon before flight back. Made sure to scan at every shop we went in so I guess we now await possible instructions to stay home for another 2 weeks.

Advice please : I am in Auckland (Pukekohe) and have my Tauranga based parents here with me.

They are wondering if they need to go home now, or if tomorrow morning will be ok.

I am not sure.

You can leave Auckland if returning home.

Correct. Some kind of proof of address (power bill on mobile phone, with name matching ID of a car occupant) should get them through any checkpoints. Last time the formal exemptions process wasn't stood up for the first 24 hours.

That said, last time the wait times for the checkpoints were up to 3 hours. I would advise your parents Fuel up their car before hitting the moterway, take a piss before leaving, pack a drink bottle, snacks etc. Personally I'm not a fan of waiting so I would consider going tonight if I was in that situation. (That said I frequently do that trip late in the evening so it would not be unusual for me)

Break the rules you should be isolating in a prison cell for a month.

I am feeling super frustrated with this latest lockdown. The one prior, well not as much, but this was entirely preventable.

Has anybody dug into the legislation and health orders?

Are there actual rules that are broken?

I note in the press conferences the term should has been used a lot instead of must. i.e. people who when to X location should isolate.

I have the feeling the likes of staying home when sick is a request rather than a rule.

I think one problem is that Auckland went out of lockdown 3, down to 2, too early and it is was possibly a very political decision, due to the high cost of lockdowns to businesses. I recall hearing one of the popular morning radio hosts saying it was the common sense thing to do, to drop down a level. Yet we knew this is was the new strain which is worse, and Australia seem to be way more conservative with their lockdowns this time. If we hadn't gone down a level, I suspect this could have  been better contained, and it forces people to stay at home. Now we are going to pay for this with a larger lockdown cost as a result. We can't afford to let it spread because we don't have the health capacity to cope with a large scale outbreak, so lockdowns our our only solution until we actually start vaccinating the population. I wouldn't be surprised if this lockdown didn't extend out to a month now, remembering the last Auckland lockdown and people allegedly also not following the rules. Hopefully we will be lucky again... But I think it is time for for stricter enforcement as some people can't be trusted, and the cost to the economy is too great.

Absolutely. This was was preventable.   Except if it is a different strain / source entirely and is caused by another leak at the border, but I think that is unlikely. But it doesn't really help that they don't know how it got into the community.

I was telling someone yesterday that I wouldn't be surprised if Auckland went up a level in the next week as the cases that were popping up were a concern. It is the cases that they aren't finding that are a problem too, and people just not bothering to get tested if they are sick. I think people have forgotten a lot of what happened last year, and think the vaccine will fix it. Sigh
