Break the rules you should be isolating in a prison cell for a month.

We don't want to put people off getting tested. They also need to do something about payments if people need to isolate and can't work, and this payment needs to be instant into their account. The current system may have contributed to people not isolating and having to work to make ends meet.

I am feeling super frustrated with this latest lockdown. The one prior, well not as much, but this was entirely preventable.

I am *totally* over Arderns "be kind", and "team of 5 million" messaging. We are past that for these particular people.

See @mattwnz post above.  He's correct - it would likely make matters worse.

"Be kind" and "team of 5 million" is good appropriate messaging IMO.  We'd have likely avoided this lockdown if the previous L3 was for a longer period. If experts have been overestimating probable compliance or underestimating how contagious the new strain is, that needs to change.  IIRC Perth went in to full lockdown with only 1 case of possible CT.  We went out of full lockdown when we still hadn't fully ring-fenced a known CT cluster.

I'd wager that some "real" experts in epidemiology etc wouldn't have been very happy about the way things have being managed - but aware that expressing those views publicly gradually erodes confidence / trust in the response.

or you could say that if the 3 people had isolated when told to it would be all over and contained by now, the latest person went to get a test and then instead of isolating until the result came back he went to the gym, i mean how unaware do you have to be. It is why people are pissed of this time because we dont have to be in lockdown.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Sure - I'd instinctively want to lock them all in stocks in the village square and pelt them with decaying organic matter, but if a moron who went to the doctor with symptoms to get tested - and then to a gym - thought that might happen to him, he probably wouldn't have gone to get tested at all but still would have gone to the gym.  Then instead of locking down when there's one unknown origin CT case, you'd be locking down when there's many turning up, initially appearing random. and trying to join the dots - which you'd probably never trace back to him anyway.

Its a never ending game. If you rely on trust you get leaks. If you rely on harsh consequences you don't get tests. If you lockdown, businesses criticise, if you dont, everyone else criticises.

It might be time to fully shut the border for a period, get these cases cleaned up/cured so we have zero cases anywhere, all MIQ have left, then revisit.

We are totally reliant on a vaccine to solve our situation.
As a nation, how much lockdown can we afford ?Will Auckland continue to lock down for a week every month until the vaccine is effective ?

Yes, Auckland and anywhere else will suffer the odd lockdown. Given that there is no way to avoid a situation where a person got a test then went to a gym, mall, supermarket etc, you can never fix that. Some people are stupid, and in this case the odds of contracting Covid are very low here, it unfortunately affected a person who doesn't care. Given the over 100,000 that have come back, that incomings are now quite low, best to shut the border until all cases are have been cured. The border has leaks that cannot be avoided if people can test negative, get released then be positive. Then you have people like these cases that dont care. Thats why there are lockdowns.

The case is confirmed to be genomically linked to the cluster.  One bullet dodged - but more to come.

Scott3:

Good news is that Pfizer is delivering quicker than the Ministry of Health had listed a couple of months ago. First doses were expected in Quarter 2 (April onwards), yet it is February, and we have taken delivery of 130,000 odd doses...

My guess is that a country like the USA hasn't been able to take delivery of all the does it had on order (Vaccination program going slower than expected, ultra cold freezers full? Weather related one off event?), so they have started filling our order sooner. Alternatively Pfizer may be trying to win more business from us, knowing they have one of the best vaccines on the market, we can easily afford their relatively high price, and we only ordered 750k courses for our 5m population.

Australia signed up for another 10m doses of Pfizer a few weeks ago and from comments I read while there is no exact date yet, these are are planned for delivery around July/August.

NZ's current vaccine supplies include vaccines such as the J&J that have literally only just completed phase 3 trials, and Novavax which isn't due to receive any certification anywhere in the world for at least another couple of months.

Our vaccine requirements are a drop in the bucket globally, and yet based on what we're seeing we're still going to be near the back of the line. We're going to see the NZ attitude towards out response change very quickly if we ended up being in a situation soon where going in and out of lockdown became a lot more common.

Global vaccine supplies are ramping up very quickly (the US aim to have had 300m doses delivered by the end of June) so lets hope we're out there trying to get these..Even if we're paying $$ for Pfizer it's still cheaper than a lockdown.

I actually couldn't disagree more. There is really nothing to suggest this case would not have happened had Auckland still been at level 3 now. They could have still gone to the gym, and they could have still gone to BK (albeit they would have had to use the drive thru).

We really do need to look at the rules regarding family members of casual or casual plus contacts, who right now still don't need to isolate or be tested.

And we really need to be doing something about saliva testing. The Govt inaction on this has gone past being inexcusable - right now it's almost like they're giving the country the middle finger when it comes to this despite the Simpson / Roche Covid report delivered to them in Oct saying this was a priority.

Nope. Gyms are supposed to be closed at L3.

Oops my bad.. I was thinking of L2 where you have to book time slots at most gyms to manage capacity. It's just all too confusing now. 😀
