Haven't had a chance to read the whole thread to see if anyone else has posted it, but you can watch how things are developing pretty much live, here:

This is one map I'm extremely glad we're yet to feature on!

So far 43 airlines have suspended all - or reduced - flights to / from China:

  • Air Astana
  • Air Canada
  • Air France
  • Air India
  • Air KBZ
  • Air Seoul
  • Air Tanzania
  • American Airlines
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Austrian Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • China Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • El Al Israel Airlines
  • EVA Air
  • Finnair
  • Hong Kong Airlines
  • Iberia
  • IndiGo
  • Jetstar Asia
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Lion Air
  • Lufthansa
  • Myanmar Airways International
  • Myanmar National Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • SCAT Airlines
  • SkyUp Airlines
  • Swiss International Air Lines
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Ukraine International Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Ural Airlines

(edit - added link - and comment that I haven't gone through the list on the link to "Business Insider" - which IMO should rank kind of low on a trustworthy source ranking)

(Second edit - Air NZ is now almost on the list, they're reducing flights to Beijing from 7 to 4 per week from Mid Feb)

The reason AirNZ and others are reducing flights is that the demand for those flights has plummetted. Not because they believe it will prevent the spread of the virus. AirNZ released information yesterday about what they are doing to prevent the spread, seems reasonable to me.

Id like to know how many airlines reduced or cancelled flights for containment reasons? Air New Zealand is reducing due to lower demand they say, so that's just corporate $ based.

I'd bet it's next to zero. It's all going to be about the commercial realities, even if x airline says different.

Its about containment. Air NZ can't prevent the spread. Thats ridiculous Russia, China's best friend has closed the border, thats about containment, that's how you manage this precarious situation. Many other countries have closed the border for the correct reason, hence airlines cannot fly to/from. But not here

Who's closed their border? Russia's only closed some checkpoints, You can still cross and even if they tried to close it land borders are so porous

No issue if Air NZ drops flights for commercial reasons but the silly reporter who adds in "Air NZ reducing flights" in a report about what NZ is doing to mitigate the virus spread is too stupid.

The other side to the argument is that it probably will be ok, probably no infection will get here and probably not many anyway. I gather SARS was newsworthy, but this one has exceeded SARS infections by a very wide margin

What I read is that Russia has closed the border with China. Off course borders are porous that's not what I said

That linked article seems to indicate that quite a few have cancelled services due to the Wuhan virus threat - rather than for commercial reasons (reduced demand).

ie:

Air India is axing flights to Shanghai until mid-February and reducing service to Hong Kong, The Times of India reported.

For its flights to Hong Kong, crews will be required to wear special masks and come straight home as passengers to avoid staying in the region.

I read an interesting post on reddit today saying that Chinese authorities have translated the WHO announcement in a way that deliberately plays down the severity of the statement. E.g. calling it, "an internationally followed sudden public sanitary incident".

It took WHO 4 months to declare a public emergency for SARS, 1 month for this.

16 out of 25 crossings to close, You said "Many other countries have closed the border for the correct reason" and I haven't heard or seen that anywhere

What companies say, vs the reality are two different things. I'd be taking those claims with a truck load of sand.

I'd expect Air NZ to stop flying to prevent spread only if the Government (who are their largest shareholder) told them to, on the advise of someone like the WHO.

Otherwise, I'll put my money on "commercial realities".

The actual quote is "Russia is closing its entire border with China, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced Friday. Although no cases of the disease have surfaced in Russia, the country does share one of the world's longest international borders with China."

Yes that's not literally the whole border, metre by metre. Its the whole border as that border is managed, which is yes, checkpoints, and alerts to those populations on either side, and why
