mmmhmm. Right. Still same situation people. The world is imploding. We are not. Some hardship is to be expected.

Shouldn't be allowed in at all IMHO.  Just visiting for some family issue that could probably be conducted on Zoom

People are allowed in for many reasons.

From no reason (eg bubble) to specific reason eg America's Cup.

So what reasons will you allow and what reasons won't you?

From: https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/flights/australians-may-be-jailed-or-fined-if-they-fly-in-from-india-reports/news-story/da6aeb4a5a0d390d7b4a545e56b040d3

Australians wanting to fly home from India will face five years jail time and massive fines under new criminal offence laws that come into effect on Monday.

Returning citizens who have been in India in the past two weeks will be threatened with the prison sentence, the first law in Australia’s history making it illegal for citizens to return home.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said late on Friday night the measure was proportionate to the escalating COVID-19 threat on the subcontinent.

“The government does not make these decisions lightly,” he said.

Australia also strictly restricts outbound travel as well, and has done for some time.
I expect this reduces the cases of people who travel out during the pandemic,
then requiring help when another wave comes through country they travelled to.
Further risking introduction of SARS-Cov2 and taking up hotel spaces in tight demand.

Australia's outbound travel ban is one of the strictest coronavirus public health responses in the world - ABC News

Not my call but I think we should be a bit more selective than allowing all NZ citizens and residents effectively free travel in and out.

i think they are pretty selective. not by reason, but by MIQ. you can only come in if you have a spot in MIQ. that to me is not free travel in and out. but it's not exactly what you're after but how is America's cup reason for non citizens to enter more important reason than citizens with family issues?

It's not actually selective though, it's just luck of the draw who can get a MIQF place.  And we've had a 100k or so who have "returned" since this thing began.

Hard to know what the criteria could be, how about:

  • Citizens (not PR) who don't have dual nationality elsewhere and need to return to NZ due to visa expiring or similar
  • Citizens/PR whose genuine place of residence (with proof, eg rates or rent bill) is in NZ
  • Those where there is a clear and significant financial, cultural or recreational benefit to NZ (eg America's Cup team, Wiggles, etc)
  • Those who have other business/personal reasons that can't be conducted by other means

We keep hearing about "rights", well I think the rights of people travelling need to be balanced with those here - eg right of free travel within NZ, right of free association, right of peaceful enjoyment of property.  All of the latter have been curtailed temporarily but significantly due to COVID.  I'm not complaining about that, it was justified and it worked - but it shows that rights are not absolute and we are living in unusual times

Expert wants Olympics postponed.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/300289737/top-epidemiologist-calls-on-government-to-intervene-as-kiwis-prepare-to-travel-to-tokyo-for-olympics

What happens when our vaccinated Olympians and support staff return? Are they put in MIQ given that it seems that while they wont get sick they can still spread it?

Government agency front line board staff are losing there jobs because they won't be vaccinated.
They work for customs and there are no other roles for then in the area so can't be redeployed.

Fine by me.

Some of the leaks and cases in Oz are a bit of a concern, especially as some people don't appear to be following the rules. This is what caused NZ to go into it's first lockdown last year costing billions, as some people returned didn't do what they were required to to and self isolate at home. In terms of cost to NZs economy if an Auckland  lockdown resulted, I don't think the trans-tasman bubble makes financial sense.  I would be far more comfortable if we weren't so far behind many countries with our vaccination program, so there is some immunity in the community.
