Expert wants Olympics postponed.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/300289737/top-epidemiologist-calls-on-government-to-intervene-as-kiwis-prepare-to-travel-to-tokyo-for-olympics

What happens when our vaccinated Olympians and support staff return? Are they put in MIQ given that it seems that while they wont get sick they can still spread it?

Yes, they will go into MIQ. Rooms have already been booked for them. They will be coming home at different times as the Olympics is requiring people to leave japan within 48 hours of their event finishing.

No different from vaccinated people traveling for other reasons.

Should note that vaccination is not required for our Olympic team, but uptake will be very high. - There are going to be frequent covid-19 tests at the games. If an athlete catches covid-19 everything they have spent years working towards will go up in smoke.

The Pfizer vaccine is only cira 95% effective, so not good enough to replaced managed isolation while NZ's community doesn't have a high level of vaccination. Still good that international arrivals are vaccinated. The would be about 20x times less likely to be bring covid-19 into MIQ than a un vaccinated person. Less cases in MIQ means lower odds of a leak...

Some of the leaks and cases in Oz are a bit of a concern, especially as some people don't appear to be following the rules. This is what caused NZ to go into it's first lockdown last year costing billions, as some people returned didn't do what they were required to to and self isolate at home. In terms of cost to NZs economy if an Auckland  lockdown resulted, I don't think the trans-tasman bubble makes financial sense.  I would be far more comfortable if we weren't so far behind many countries with our vaccination program, so there is some immunity in the community.

???

Some of their leaks? Its been almost daily in Australia. I thought from reading here that NZ was a shocker. Did NZ first lockdown cost billions? Is that ok? You would prefer no lockdown?

NZ is behind the rest, why is that? We are low priority. We also booked 10 million doses, but they haven't been delivered, why is that?

AFAIK vaccinations don't provide immunity. They mean that you and I wont get sick, but we can transmit, as we can still get infected. Transmission is 1/3 to 1/2 less as we wont be coughing, but at the end of the day, vaccination is not a cure, its a "dont get sick" solution and that's all it is.

When ou compare the well over 100,000 returness we have had, and the issues since the Travel bubble 19th, its not working.

The resulting affects from the first lockdown and the knockon effects  has resulted in emergency economic measures, resulting in  100billion dollars being printed, andemergency low interest rates which is going to affect NZ for generations. Resulting in huge asset price inflation etc

The vaccinating of the population is to reduce the load on our health system to a level that the health system can cope with it when we finally let the virus in. Transmission should also be reduced, as people who aren't coughing or sneezing but have the virus, would be less likely to pass it on. But NZ may need to get used to mask wearing in some social distancing for years once the borders reopen, esp on public transport. They have already gotten used to it in the US and UK.

1. As expected. Unless you want to leave the people and businesses to themselves and provide no support? Then you are paying endless unemployment and less income tax revenue etc. This response is no different to elsewhere. Im not sure your feed them to the wolves approach is a good idea.

2. Our health system despite the incessant reminders that NZ has been poor, has been fine. We let the virus in daily from flights. Its been ok so far. When we all get vaccinated, will wont get sick. We will carry it, but we wont get sick. I don't follow how we will need to wear masks for years if "Transmission should also be reduced, as people who aren't coughing or sneezing but have the virus, would be less likely to pass it on. " Does the vast majority of the US and OK wear masks?? If your prediction is correct, then restuarants, bars, stadiums will all be mask wearing facilities. In which case we are better of now then when everyone is vaccinated?

I have a family member who is flying here from Sydney on Friday. She will stay two weeks and then return to Sydney. She lives there but is a New Zealand citizen.

She says she is having trouble finding clear information about Covid entry requirements, specifically whether she needs to show proof of vaccination or a negative test when entering either country. Does anyone know for certain exactly what the requirements, if any, are? No speculation please, just actual knowledge.

It's Australia. Status is irrelevant. Tourists can come if they want. You don't need to do anything other than not travel further afield. And declare you are healthy and not being a dick.

Given that vaccines are only available to limited priority groups at the moment on both side's of the Tasman, requiring vaccination certs isn't a viable option for trans tasman travel.

Pre-departure testing is a lever the government can pull under the quarantine free travel framework, but as per the link previously provided, it is currently not required.

I saw there was an interview with Fauci about concerns with Australia and the vaccine rollout , which would also apply to NZ. We should be making the rollout the top priority.  https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/apr/14/australia-should-make-covid-vaccine-rollout-top-priority-anthony-fauci-says

If I'm not mistaken the global covid rate is nearly as high as its ever been.

So that brings me to our vaccine

Does anyone know if the pfizer vaccine is still good for the current dominant strains and when they plan to update it

Batman: News that nz high comm in India took in oxygen for sick patient inside?!?

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-new-zealand-high-commission-in-india-issues-urgent-plea-for-oxygen/XRZYLPW66HZL4XPZTVAD6SYFYM/

Since been cleared up that they had a request on behalf so used a bit of pull power. Rather than anyone inside needing it.

I didn't click though to the interview on youtube, but the article indicates that Fauci's concerns are about vaccine hesitancy and antivaxxers, not slow rollout due to low availability of vaccine, or other reasons why things are going too slowly.
