clinty: New case of unknown origin in Sydney

Based on the second Perth case over the Weekend, you would expect the bubble with Sydney to pause... but we have one flight to Perth every couple of days, last time I looked there are over 10 daily flights to/from Sydney

Community case in NSW, so far not able to be traced, awaiting genome sequencing.

...the man had not recently returned from overseas, did not work in quarantine and had no contacts with the hospital system.

... had a high viral load, suggesting he was potentially highly infectious, which was cause for concern.

And this is my reason for my original post... When I do manage to get past the initial engaged tone, the automated switchboard can't handle the traffic and I get a 2nd engaged tone. I've phoned over forty times today without getting anywhere.

If you are ringing 40 times, you might be contributing to the traffic it can't handle.

It wouldn't surprise me if we don't go beyond ~85% of the population getting a vaccine. Maybe it might be higher, but you have to put it into some context and compare it to other vaccinations.

Headline stories in the New York Times this morning reports concern about sharp declines in people receiving their first shot (somewhat expected because so many have already been vaccinated) but mentions that the target is to have 70% vaccinated by July 4.

~85% is roughly what we achieve for 5 year vaccination completion for kids, dragged down in some regions and especially for Maori populations (Northland etc).

I have doubts that we'll get to 85%. for C-19 (of eligible population - ie not including kids).  There are too many nutters being active, on social media, handing out pamphlets, some quasi-Christian and other CT groups etc.

85% should be enough to manage the worst effects. The fall off of deaths in the UK with ~65% having received the 1st dose is quite remarkable.

BBC News - Indonesian firm busted for reusing Covid nasal swab tests

breaking

Several employees of a pharmaceutical company have been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly washing and reselling used Covid nasal swab test kits.

Up to 9,000 passengers at an airport in Medan may have been tested with the reused swab sticks, say police. ...

Police said they believed the scam had been happening since last December at Kualanamu airport in Medan, North Sumatra. It is not yet confirmed how they discovered the ruse.

Passengers are required to have a negative test if they want to fly, and the airport offers the option of getting the swabs done on site. ...

The profit from the scam ... was used to fund the construction of a lavish house for one of the suspects.

Nasal instillation - what a novel way of spreading COVID.  😟

I've been informed that Northland vaccination centres have spare capacity and are allowing eligible residents (I'm an eligible resident) to simply turn up to get jabbed. I don't know how true this is. However, you still need to book an appointment using the Northland Hotline number. before attending.

It was the case.. Trial run that failed miserably by popularity and exploit.

Walk-in.. Until people were driving up from Auckland/out of region. And even flying up from the south island. So the door was shut as soon as it was opened and turned into a booking system to help weed some out. With basically no walk in space left as a result. Started 4 days ago. This was update yesterday

Ditto Israel - both case numbers and deaths, despite a significant relaxation of social distancing rules, etc

Despite the inevitable problems the vaccination program seems to be ramping up quite well overall. It's broadly on plan with some areas ahead and some behind.

Yes, recent daily rates per capita now close to the AU rate (though mostly because AU hit stumbling blocks, particularly with the late decision to use Pfizer-BoiNTech for people under 55).

Of more concern though, the rather messy messaging (& initial roll out).  In particular, the widely promoted statements that Group 3 (65+) will be vaccinated "from May", with vaccination of the rest of the population "from July".  As sbiddle noted, the number of vaccine doses scheduled to the end of June is only a fraction more than the number required to vaccinate Groups 1 & 2.  Suggests there was never any intention to vaccinate more than a small fraction of Group 3 before July, which is far from what was being portrayed.

I live in Northland DHB region which is under performing against their plan by 70%

see https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-data-and-statistics/covid-19-vaccine-data#model

I've been informed that Northland vaccination centres have spare capacity and are allowing eligible residents (I'm an eligible resident) to simply turn up to get jabbed. I don't know how true this is. However, you still need to book an appointment using the Northland Hotline number. before attending.

There are five vaccination centre throughout Northland with my nearest centre is Whangarei which is only open a total of 24 hours over four separate days each week.

Maybe, Northland should try to beef up their Hotline number or scrap it to improve their stats..

And this is my reason for my original post... When I do manage to get past the initial engaged tone, the automated switchboard can't handle the traffic and I get a 2nd engaged tone. I've phoned over forty times today without getting anywhere.

In short, the Northland DHB messed up big time. They decided to ignore the Ministry of heaths roll out plan, and formally open up vaccinations to 50+ a few days ago. Massive issues with this:

  • 50+ is something like 30% of the population. Seems they have no where near the resources to deliver on that in one hit, making overloading inevitable.
  • Unlikely that the ministry of health has allocated north-land extra doses to skip the queue on the rest of the country.
  • As you say vaccine clinic's aren't even open 5 days a week.
  • Advertised walk in's despite the high risk of overloading (now canceled).
  • No online booking system, only labor intensive phone number and email address.
  • Being out of step with the rest of the country lead to people traveling to north-land for vaccination. Given that Northland has a low population, but is easy day trip distance from highly populated Auckland there is the potential for a lot of vaccine tourism. Apparently they are turning out of region people away, but bet there are people using friends, family, holiday home & fake addresses...

The reality is that it will take months (2+) to get through priority group 3 nationwide (it has 1,700,000 people in it...). This will be even harder for north land as they 50+ people in the mix too meaning they are trying to do a bigger percentage of the population than the rest of the country....

If you are willing to invest massive time to get one of the early vaccinations, go for it. But the reality is that only a very small percentage of the population northland DHB has made eligible will get it in the next couple of weeks.

If you are not planning any high risk activity or overseas travel, might be easier just to give it 3 - 5 weeks for the situation to cool, and the systems to improve...

All this is a real pity, a positive vaccination experience is important to get people to recommend the process to friends, which we need to get a high uptake nationally. This will have left a sour taste for many sadly.

I don't know that they did screw up that badly.

NDHB is behind plan by 30% not 70%. I'm not really surprised, I've dealt extensively with NDHB and they aren't a particularly well run organisation.

That said the biggest issue for them appears to be their plan was too ambitious. They are running well above the national average with ~4.7% vaccinated. They are behind plan but still in the top half of administered doses and 5th (I think) in the percentage of population vaccinated.
