I've started to get more scratchy with the Mrs than usual.

She isn't working, so doesn't really get the whole "working from home is quite stressful at times" thing...and also that I can spend all day on VC's and maybe I don;t want to speak to anyone when my working day is over.

It's hard. No commute, so no "me" time as such...

I have managed to push my walks to twice daily. I go for a walk after breakfast and another after dinner. Although painful I have found it clears my head and distracts from whatever is getting to me.
I have been using my watch to track steps and I am setting higher step targets each week. I am currently averaging over 10,500 steps per day which is a huge increase for me. This is very satisfying and motivating. I can feel my fitness growing. I am definitely better off mentally now to where I was two weeks ago.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Other way round for me: I am usually working from home and SWMBO is at the office. Now she is at home too and thinks that means I can just be interrupted when it suits her to do something or walk the dogs etc.

Fortunately she is onto it and figured out early on in the proceedings that setting her 'office' up in the other wing of the house was a Good Idea!

Fortunately she is onto it and figured out early on in the proceedings that setting her 'office' up in the other wing of the house was a Good Idea!

Our home office is more than big enough to have the two of us using it and I had it set with two desks in an L shape to allow me to use my iMac, Linux PC and Windows PC at the same time. However when my fabulous wife was told their office was closing and she will be working from home until at least the end of June we set up a second office in a spare bedroom. My wife uses the home office during the day and I use the one in the spare bedroom. My wife spends a very large chunk of the day on video conference call and I would have exiting stage left out of the office every 10 minutes or so.

Having two seperate offices is great to allow own space and work home balance. Means I have to travel further to make and deliver cups of tea to her but that helps with my step count. I do hear some interesting conversations and hear the odd commercial secret which I am vowed to silence over but could be used for leverage if I were that way inclined.

Generally it has been a very good and enjoyable experience having her home and it wont be an problem seeing out the duration.

It is surprising what secrets you can find. A few years ago, I was staying at the Sofitel in Beverley Hills. One day I was using the iMac in the Business Centre to look something up and OOI looked to see what I could find. I printed the last document which turned out to be a film project being pitched to Tom Cruise's production company...!

Eh, not great today. Lots of sitting around and waiting for high level stuff from third parties but a frantic rush to get monthly reporting sorted for March, which is a struggle on an ageing laptop with one screen. Starting to find it harder to get to sleep at night.

I think the whole experience of working from home varies a lot depending on your personal circumstances.

My employer has provided some well-meaning but unrealistic advice involving setting up dual external monitors, fancy office chairs, lighting, etc. Unfortunately my usual place of residence is a little shack on the beach, and during the lockdown period I am living away from home to provide support to someone else, and neither of those environments can accommodate anything more than my laptop and a bit of writing material.

I'm not complaining - I'm just really grateful to still have a job to do - but I think it's important not to beat ourselves up if we don't have a perfect working environment. It's okay to just make do with what you've got.

True. I think I also miss the more cut-and-thrust aspects of my work and now all I have left to focus on is the extremely procedural transnational stuff that any idiot could do. It's hard to feel like I'm adding any significant value atm and the lack of a definite return to work proper makes it extremely hard to stay motivated at the moment.

Part of me is tempted to spoil myself with some sort of reward for but with broader uncertainty I've basically paired back all personal spending. It's not hard to see how we could end up in a deflationary world if that happens en masse.

Unfortunately the bulk of my 'rainy day fund' would be paid out annual leave, and that's assuming that should I lose my job, it would be available to be paid out to me. Somewhat drank the pub dry trying to get into a house at long last with the view to building up savings, but still very much in that phase atm.

I'm pleased with the way our company (and our huge global parent company) are treating the WFH thing.

Whilst the majority of us will have a half-decent setup for this as we are a software company, with occasional remote working the norm, we are being told it's a best-endeavours working environment right now.

There's still deadlines and stress and staff to manage and multiple Video Conferences, but we are also repeatedly told that if we get overloaded or if the working environment isn't working for us, or lockdown is getting to us; just take some time out. Go for a walk.

Don't be afraid to start late some days. Finish early. Change up your hours, etc. Just let people know so we are all on the same page.

It does take a touch of the pressure off.
