IOC VP: Tokyo Olympics will go ahead, even if there's a state of emergency

Its clearly about pride, not sport or people

It's about money, nothing else. They want the broadcasting rights income. What is a mass pandemic compared to that?

100%, I favour a mass boycott

Pretty sure the Japanese government has signed a contract that States of they cancel the Olympics for almost any reason the are in the hook for a huge bill. It's only the IOC that can cancel the Olympics. And they are probably only willing to do it if their insurance will pay out (Assuming they have some).

Interesting reading - but something irrelevant to NZ since we are only using a single vaccine (at present at least).  https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/mix-and-match-covid-vaccines-trigger-potent-immune-response/

While you might favour that, fit and well young athletes in the prime of their lives who have trained for the last 5 years for one event might not share your sentiments.

Don't look at me I'm not an olympian.

Sorry for the fit and well young athletes in the prime of their lives who have trained for the last 5 years for one event, but life isn't always fair. Maybe they should redirect their energies elsewhere. I doubt most of them really want the rest of the world to end up like India just so they can stand on a  podium for a few seconds.

Exactly.. While Pfizer may be the trendy vaccine to have now, the UK us proof that there is really nothing wrong with the AZ vaccine.

Meanwhile in Aussie I know plenty of people who would quite happily have the AZ vaccine tomorrow but can't have it.

Almost everyone had had to make some sacrifice due to covid. So someone not participating at an Olympics maybe major for them, most will get another chance to participate at a future games, and there are also other events. We are in the middle of a pandemic after all, and it is something that spreads at events like this, which would likely be a mass spreader event, even if restricted. Frankly I am surprised that Japan has done so poorly with Covid, considering how strict and disciplined they are. When I was in Japan people wearing masks was normal in winter when having a cold etc. I would have expected them to be in a similar situation to NZ and Oz.

We can thank the Japanese constitution for that. After WW2, the Americans (who played a major role in putting together the Japanese constitution) decided that they never wanted the Japanese to be able to dictate laws compelling the public to do anything — this made sense at the time, given Japanese behaviour over the previous 10+ years.

This means that the government can't order lockdown decrees, instead only strongly recommending businesses to shut, or for people to stay inside, etc. There is at least one family restaurant in Japan currently suing the government for unconstitutionally restricting their trade.
Any business that wants to stay open as much as it wants can legally do so. Local municipalities can require stronger enforcement, but this has resulted in a mishmash of enforcement similar to what we've seen in the US.

Yes, I favour thousands of lives over a piece of metal. Put the prestige aside, and lets talk sport. It would not be hard to relocate the Olympics to a more suitable and safe destination. But that goes against the point of the Olympics, prestige, prestige and prestige. Finance was next, sport ranked about 8th

This shocks me

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/125180540/covid19-welleducated-and-welloff-antivaxxers-are-among-us

Im not bothered about the anti-crew that traverse most things these days, but Covid is Covid. Its not the flu or a dental jab to make that filling easier, its serious, but maybe the jab is seen by more than a few as not needed? While idiots like this wont help herd immunity, Id hope the rest of us will, and they can later on, whine about getting sick, and also whine about being declined as no vaccination certificate for whatever travel/experience they paid for. I had a blood test the other day, have had flu jab before, and had the odd dental anti pain jab, what is the issue? It appears to be more between the ears than anything rational.

It's the exact same problem Australia are facing.

The fact neither country really had large numbers of Covid cases combined with fact people don't understand endemic Covid means there are lots of people who don't understand why they need to be vaccinated. They think they don't need the vaccine because the PM said we beat Covid, we have no Covid here, and that once it's "wiped out" elsewhere in the world and we open our borders things will be just like they were before Covid.

I really don't know how we're going to fight that battle - because even media in NZ misquoted and then beat up on Jane Hrdlicka for raising the very important issue that we don't seem to want to discuss.

Come some point in 2022 we're going to open our borders, some people will come here with Covid, some NZers are going to catch it, and some will most probably die.

I've had two separate discussions this week with people who are by no means anti vax who had seemed surprised I've already had my jab and commented that because they don't travel overseas like I do that there is no need for them to be vaccinated.

The IOC isn't about sport. It's about privilege, booze, hookers and cash for the gentry.

It shocks you? Odd. I'm entirely unsurprised.
