Don't worry, while restrictions are being put in place there, the NZ-AUS travel bubble is unaffected, fill your boots. Unreal.

Its gnomically linked to the case that got out of Quarantine in SA two weeks ago, so it appears they have missed further a transmission chain (s?).. They were tipped off by wastewater tests late last week and are now moving to daily testing of this area and those around it..

Would be interesting to know what the local vaccination rates are like, but data on vaccinations in OZ  is rubbish as 2/3 of the vaccine rollout so far has been done at the Federal level and they don't appear to publish state level data... the state data for the remaining 1/3 isn't very helpful either...

It makes NZ's vaccine reporting look amazing....

All I can see is that this outbreak of 5, may stay at 5 or its been feeding itself silently till now and will grow. Not grow, but the potential two weeks of transmission will become exposed. When we had the very infrequent leaks at MIQ here it was highly newsworthy, but its seems Melbourne is now a worthwhile travel bubble risk, that's quite curious.

but at present the cases have an established link

What you mean is the known cases have a link. There are two cases, now 3, 4 and now 5, how many more? Contact tracing isn't very useful for cases that are yet to be exposed. Thousands in MEB have been told to isolate as they have been to the places of interest (known places of interest). This outbreak didn't start from scratch 48 hours ago, that's the problem. But at least you can escape to NZ very easily.... That's a far cry from the guy that escaped MIQ to get beers, making the news in 2020. Now you can seemingly be in an outbreak of as yet unknown history/size and cross the border to NZ

Taiwan and Singapore's current coronavirus surge should serve as a warning to Australia, experts say

But Taiwan's status for having successfully contained the virus was challenged in April when a cluster of cases was traced back to a hotel at the island's main international airport at Taoyuan, outside of Taipei.

Rules had been relaxed prior to the outbreak, allowing pilots to quarantine for three days instead of the full 14.

I do remember that Hong Kong had trouble with pilots from major US Air Cargo companies in the middle of the year .

Airfreight in and out of Taiwan has continued at a pace as a major semiconductor and technology manufacturing center for the world.

All in very high demand, but there are many other display and other technologies that Taiwan is significant in.

First dose today (underlying health condition).  Interestingly I would estimate I was in the top 10% of ages there at 47, my mum who went with me was the oldest there by a long shot.  I would guess 70% were below 30.  Surprised me as I expected it to be mainly over 65s

Not sure if that was just a timing thing, perhaps the younger crowd booked early like me (8:30) because they had work or school.

Person in front and behind me were early 20's, when asked they said they had no underlying health conditions and were not related to border workers, just shrugged when asked why they had an appointment.  Not quite sure how they wrangled it (they might have had a reason that I didn't overhear).  Lucky them I guess.

Yes interesting. I'm booked for my first shot 4th June. I'm 66½ with no qualifying illnesses and yet my partner who is 8 years younger than me and has T2 diabetes and mild immuno compromised other illnesses is not yet eligible according to the BoP DHB COVID real person booking system.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

The risk right now to Australia and New Zealand is probably the highest it has ever been.

We're two countries with very low levels of vaccination who have had multiple border breaches and live in hope that another one won't happen because we both can't seem to keep winning at Russian roulette when it comes to these highly infectious variants.

Press release:

New Zealand’s Quarantine Free Travel with Victoria will be paused while the source of infection of the five cases announced in Melbourne in the last two days is investigated, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says.

Victoria has put in place restrictions which come into force tonight, limiting the size of gatherings and requiring the use of face coverings indoors, following confirmation of a fifth locally-acquired case of COVID-19.

The pause will come into force from 7.59pm NZT and be in place for 72 hours initially. As with previous pauses, it will be under constant review.

While the case announced today is not unexpected as a contact of a case announced yesterday, New Zealand officials have assessed that the most cautious option is to pause the travel bubble with Victoria as there are still several unknowns with the outbreak.

The Government understands the disruption this will temporarily cause affected passengers. It was a close call but the correct one given the current unknowns. The decision follows the travel bubble framework.

Whole genome sequencing has identified that the cases reported yesterday are closely linked to a previous case identified in the community in Wollert on 11 May after leaving managed isolation in South Australia.

An epidemiological link has yet to be determined between these cases and there is currently no known link between people in the current outbreak and any of the exposure sites from Wollert.

Information about locations of interest are provided on the Victoria Health website and are being updated regularly.

In Australia, the 14-day travel restrictions for those who have visited locations of interest means they are ineligible to travel to New Zealand within 14 days from exposure – even with a negative COVID-19 test.

Anyone in New Zealand who has been at a location of interest in Melbourne at the specified time should contact Healthline on 0800 358 5453 as soon as possible for advice on isolating and testing.

Anyone who has visited Melbourne since 11 May should monitor for symptoms and seek advice from Healthline if any symptoms develop.

A Section 70 notice has been issued under the Health Act with a number of requirements for any person who attended a location of interest. More information is available on the Ministry of Health website here: https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-response-planning/covid-19-epidemic-notice-and-orders

Hong Kong could soon throw away millions of unused vaccine doses
https://japantoday.com/category/world/hong-kong-could-soon-bin-millions-of-unused-vaccine-doses

""
On Tuesday a member of the government's vaccine task force warned that Hong Kongers "only have a three-month window" before the city's first batch of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines go out of date.
""
A total of 3,263,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines have been shipped to Hong Kong so far but only 1,231,600 have been administered.
""

This could not have happened at a worst time for trust.

Speaking of which, has there been a statement as to which variant the Melbourne cluster is?

(they've done genome tests for tracing, so they know, but I haven't read anything in Australian media about it)
