Yes we will, if we are all vigilant. My big concern is how they will treat a few thousand infections. It is easy when we have 5 and no hospital cases. Flu season approaching....

We have a very professional and competent medical profession and paramedics. We have a very professional and competent organisations and persons advising our government. We have a well informed Prime Minister that did not come down in the last shower. We have a very professional and competent welfare organisations to support our people.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It's just one festival versus your health plus the health of all your extended family (because you will spread it to others if you get it, guaranteed).

I get that. But Jacinda isn't running this. Ministry of Health is. That is the ministry of medical expertise. Working with WHO, and via the existing pandemic plans that were put together by MoH under National. This isnt actually a political issue, as politicians are not making the important calls here. The medical experts are.

Why is Simon also going? Because MoH say its fine to have. How many are present in the busy Aukland CBD every day? I have no idea but in much smaller ChCh its 50,000.How many rugby games are being played for the fans? Numbers of people-wise there are many "festivals"/large groups of people in close proximity at many times.

Then you have Donald Trump saying that they were one of the first counties to ban China flights,and that because Europe didn't follow this, they now have a lot of cases, and alot of those people from Europe with this have then flown into the US . I don't normally agree with DT, but that does seem to be the way it has played out. It makes sense IMO to have a travel ban on Europe to based on the way things are heading. The PM in Germany has said they now expect upto 70% of their country to get it. Apparently new travel restrictions will be put in place tomorrow by NZ. This situation was preventable according to the WHO, but there doesn't seem to have been a global unified response.

Its a hard one, but best to go slow. Hubei is still in lockdown.

Wiki tells me Italy placed a ban on passengers from China on 3 January. But they are being hammered now. The Wiki link is the travel bans, but it is bereft of Europe countries, CRAZY. So, on that, it seems COVID-19 reached Europe very easily

Don's ban is fine, except that you flit to UK then go to Canada or the US, easy.My opinion of WHO saying that is that Europe stayed as an open book, and the US has failed miserably with tests and containment. They do stuff all tests, and when they started doing stuff all test, there were faulty kits. CNN contacts a number of key people, all gave different numbers of the test kits that are on the way. But Don tells his people US is the best country, has the best health system, best doctors, you know the drill :-) The concern is that DT is ranting away and not getting it dine, there is no plan, they get people popping up randomly with it. I feel WHO meant Europe and USA, but off course can't say that.

after being greeted at the Doctors car park with medical folk in protective gear and seeing my wife being tended to with great love makes me realize we will get through this.

This was heavily underestimated (or has not been aware) in Italy and is key to gain time and to act with social responsibility!

You can trust on the lower mortability rate according to your (younger) age, but don't spread it! BTW Kids can have an up to 10.000 times higher virus density than adults but really a very low mortability risk. For high aged adults, this is vice versa.

My wife has leaved two hours ago for the next daily hospital crisis management meeting coming back late in the evening from training and coordination of her doctor colleagues and the medical personnel and from handling of the countless requests by the local health authorities ... So don't expect sources or references from me - it comes from each day's live "hands on" experience.

The infection rate of our city (Hamburg) of the last 10 days has started exactly in accordance with the exponential function.

you should post in the alternative coronavirus thread, someone said there is no evidence school kids play a role in transmission of this disease (or something to that effect)

Nobody here seriously takes notice of the Trump BS in terms of medical relevance. He's a politican and has no clue what he'll facing with that virus next. But for sure, he'll claim Europe to be the culprit for his "great" ignorance and unilaterism before.

Added later on: What do you think he want's to omit the corona discussion from the election campaign? Because the irresponsibly trivialized corona thing will fall at his feet (hopefully)!

Well, in that case you have to wait for the evidence until the virus has gone. But this consumes what we don't have at the moment ... time :-)

There seems to be a misconception developing that this will not affect children. Just because the fatality rate for children is low - does not necessarily mean children are unaffected. Any severe illnesses in childhood risk impacting normal child development. I personally don't know the precise effect on children, I assume it is much the same and I would not take any risks in this area.

Indeed I fully agree, my statement was related to normal children - but the risk with 0.2% is comparably low.

The bad thing of statistics is, that when you are directly affected, it hits you by 100%.

That is all largely irrelevant when this is a world problem, and some countries are managing it poorly, resulting in massive numbers now getting it. Even Australia appear to be reporting low level community breakouts now, which I believe means they can't trace back the infected person back to another known case. Unless NZ isolates ourselves like Samoa is doing,and somewhat like the US, from any county that has outbreaks, including Europe, by implementing travel bans from those areas, rather than just self isolation, I can't see how we can stop a large number of people getting it in the longer term. It is a very sneaky type of virus due to the long incubation period. I just think the whole way this has occurred is very odd, how can someone eating a bat, cause this whole domino effect occurring?
