Where did you find the 50 count?

This 2020 report ( in the run up to covid) notes nationally,

"There are 263 negative pressure rooms, with 15 DHBs having negative pressure rooms in either ICU or HDU."

https://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/pages/moh-covid19-sitreps-february-2020.pdf

On a population basis that would be about 80 in Auckland

but I think its probably higher as Auckland's DHBs are more well equipped that many of the smaller regional ones..

https://adhb.health.nz/assets/Documents/OIA/2020/May/Capacity-to-deal-with-COVID-19.pdf

I think my data may be wrong as it excludes major hospitals like middlemore.

Still 263 isn't a massive number for the entire country if we have an outbreak of something contagious.

Yeah, Auckland DHB is only the isthmus, there is Waitemata for the West and North Shore, and Countries Manukau to the South ( Middlemore etc)

But yes as you say 263 isn't many, although it was pre COVID, hopefully they may have beefed that up since...

Hospital, healthcare capability to deal with a new normal ?

On negative pressure rooms, you need to look at what the utilization rate was normally, and past emergency peaks we had to cope with.
There are a many burns, cancer, transplants and other treatments, as well as the viruses prior to SARS-Cov2 that were using these.

I would suspect that such expensive resources in building equipment and staff would have been 'right sized' by the cost accountants.
So if you are talking new normal we need to expand to cater for normal operation, plus new normal SARS-Cov2.
Probably a bit more to make up, if we got behind in treatment last year and our population expansion.

So probably more important than dedicated isolation, we need to be seeing more investment in healthcare system as well to be ready.
Otherwise watching what happens around the world ahead of us, and sitting tight, and selective on international travel might be a necessity.

Aussie is certainly out shopping for staff, UK is also looking at where it will get staff to replace burnout.

I don't think 50 beds is enough for a city like Auckland...

The number of iso rooms depends on the age of the hospital. The exact numbers won't be right (it's been a while since I worked on these hospitals so this is from memory) but roughly Whakatane hospital has 2 iso rooms while North Shore hospital has about 6.

For Gawds sake, Fiji is rapidly becoming the sweden of the South Pacific, and I mean that in a very bad way....

The Government's argument appears to be "we can't afford to feed people" if they lockdown the country, but NZ gave them $40 million in May, and would likely give them more assistance if they asked....

Come on Bainimarama do the right thing....

It's not a trivial exercise to build more either. The way they are usually done in NZ is with dedicated extract systems (as opposed to venturi air valves) and the quality of builders finish needs to be extremely high.

It seems pritty clear that we will struggle with opening up or even a new normal.

There are articles about ED's and hospitals being flooded at the moment with RSV cases. And that is with no covid-19 or influenza in the community.

Alert Level 1 is meant to be "Prepare", but I am not really seeing a lot of that in the healthcare sector. No announcements on new infrastructure to cope with contagious diseases, and a pay freeze for a lot of staff in the sector, which already had staff shortages, and who's workers skills are in strong demand offshore as you say.

In terms of isolation rooms / wards I think right sizing isn't the way to go. We need to have a whole bunch of spare's for abnormal events.

Unless we can spool up a lot, I think we will need to do our re-opening in Spring to summer, to avoid seasonal load on hospitals coinciding with the re-opening rush. Timing is kinda tricky as I was picking a March - April re-opening. This would be too late. So we will either need to bring it forwards to new years 2022, or wait until say October 2022. Latter is a long time to wait for those cut off from loved ones overseas.

Wait, so in media images and mentions previously they talk about Singapore airlines flying it.

And now...

How can this happen? Covid-19: Pair isolating on fishing vessel, three onshore contacts identified, after mariners' trip from Auckland Airport to Port Taranaki | Stuff.co.nz

Two positive Covid-19 test results have been returned from two mariners isolating on a fishing vessel off the coast of Taranaki, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

In a statement on Tuesday night, the ministry said the pair were part of a group of nine who arrived at Auckland Airport on Monday before driving to New Plymouth where they joined a deep sea fishing vessel.

Health officials currently regard the situation as representing a low risk to public health, but three people have been identified as contacts and are now isolating. They included their driver and port workers.
