Has anybody seen or heard anything in the news yesterday about our new mask wearing rules for Level 2 and higher?

There are still idiots who can't be bothered wearing a mask while using public transport.

Train into Britomart this morning, 20-25 people onboard, less than 25% wearing masks.

The Transport officers will happily ask you for your ticket to check but do absolutely nothing about those not wearing masks. What an absolute Joke.

Train ride home was a bit better over 50% this time.

Its likely a good representation of the overall system.

Regarding the mass vaccination "Event".

I'm sure the event will get a lot of media attention, and positive press, but the more I think about it the more I question appropriateness of this.

This comes roughly 1.5 weeks after our first massive shipment of vaccines will have landed. We will have doses galore.

Shouldn't the effort be going into standing up facilities that can run for 2+ months at this point. Rather than standing up, then breaking down the setup after three days?

Personally I think supporting GP clinics and Pharmacies to offer covid-19 vaccines in a similar way to they do flu vaccines should be the top priority. Could easily have 500 of them doing 100 doses on average each a day. That makes 50k doses a day....

On the other hand it might be good to have the knowledge gained in a trial. As we get into group 4 I imagine lots of people will prefer to have their doses in the weekend. So perhaps standing up and breaking down centers each weekend could work well then. Perhaps nurses that work weekdays at GP's will be willing to take pick up the odd weekends extra work....

100% compliance on the Birkenhead ferry when I ride it.  If you don't have one on the crew ask you to go to the coffee bar and wait and they will sell you one.  But I'd say there's only me and 1-2 others who scan in using the QR codes.

Why don't they announce over the loudspeaker than they can't drive until everyone has their mask on? Especially as Tauranga is full of old people who would be worst affected. I have heard it is pretty good in the wellington region.

They have made it pritty clear they don't expect drivers to enfroce this (and possibly face backlash). And that enforcement is to be left to the police. Even then enforcement isn't easy. There is are medical exemptions, but no need to have any proof of eligibility. Little the police could do if a passenger says they have a phobia of masks.

[edit] - I suspect the authorities are very aware of what has happened in north america. Where somehow a mask has become a political symbol...

And people will breach mask orders just to film their "rights being breached" when they get asked to leave a store or have interactions with the police... Current approach doesn't give any fuel to the crazies...

Must say I was pretty pissed off when the Waiheke ferry was selling multiple beers to mask-less customers. Plying your law breaking customers with alcohol doesn't seem prudent at all.

Yes was impressed with Wellington mask wearing on public transport. I do not use buses but with grandchildren visiting it was a bus ride and the cable car - on both the bus and the cable car everyone was wearing a mask.

It's not just that, the West trains, full of non-mask-wearers, reverse into Britomart and then become South trains. If Covid wanted a way to spread itself all over Auckland with maximum efficiency, all it needs to do is get one infected person to board a train.

I see lots of 'sickies' in NZs near future. Probably the second jab, not the first.

Probably want to time these mass vaccination events for Fridays/Saturdays so people show up for work on Monday. 😉

yes if you give 10k doses a day, and 1% get sick - not "sick" - then you will have anywhere from  100 off work in every day :)

"Oi, you! The guy without a mask on the Browns Bay bus! Do you know there's a policeman in Remuera who would probably be quite upset if he knew you weren't wearing a mask?".

This non-enforcement is non-sensical. There's no point in having a requirement like this if everyone knows you can break it with impunity. And it won't be the mask-wearers who are the transmission risk, it'll be the ones not wearing masks who also never scan QR codes, don't wash their hands, etc.

Speaking of QR codes, the Napier Countdown takes the requirement to prominently display the code quite seriously:

Also makes it hard to claim you didn't see it.

Yip. But it is basically the price of doing the vaccine roll out. Probably only has a material impact when the do workplace vaccination and do an entire workplace in one day. Staffing could be an issue the next day if they are doing time critical stuff...

I got pretty much no side effects other than soreness at the injection site.

My partner has about a day of solid side effects after the first dose and two days after the second dose.

Know of people who have set their appointment on friday so they can deal with side effects over the weekend.

But it all pales compared to my brother and sister in law with sinovac. Both had nausea and vomiting after the first dose. And at the time hospitals weren't taking new patients, so they had little options if it worsened...

The Meningococcal B vaccine is the worst side effects I have had. basically couldn't move that arm for a few days. Pfizer Conformity was nothing compared to that for me.

Vietnam like many places is fighting resurgence of SARS-Cov2, without a good supply of vaccines.
https://vietnamnews.vn/society/992272/number-of-cases-rises-due-to-extensive-testing-in-hcm-citys-high-risk-areas.html

""
Dr Nguyễn Hoài Nam, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Health, said: “The number of cases has reached more than 1,000 every day for four consecutive days. But the number will decrease when testing is expanded to other less risky areas.”
""
According to Thượng, the city needs an additional 1,500 doctors and 5,500 nurses for the treatment of COVID patients in field hospitals (asymptomatic or mild symptoms), hospitals (severe symptoms), and ICU centres (critically ill patients).
""

People are getting naturally anxious it seems about this vs the ability to control earlier outbreaks.
Vietnam does have the absolute control of the Communist Party to enforce measures, but SARS-Cov2 does its own thing nevertheless.
