The methodology may have some holes - but it’s surely a very good start. The strictest in the known world. It’s very easy to criticise.

They can't stop citizens returning but just because someone is a student doesn't mean they don't self isolate.

They just do it at home.

Offer a school student 2 weeks off school to stay at home, and 99.36% will think they just won lotto. Two weeks loss of school won't harm them. I left school at 12 - missed the next 5 or 6 years - never did me any harm.

You will self-isolate. Even if you are a student. Being a student is even worse - risk getting the whole school closed?

Blow 6k of Australian beach holiday or 2 weeks non pay on return and pissed off work colleagues because if I'm off they cant have their holiday and they would have to cover my night shifts and Easter would also be affected.

Do I send the wife and kids over by them selves?

Generally you should follow the government advice not to travel.

Many airlines have opened up flexibility, so you may be able to hold credit to travel early next year. I think the likes of Air BnB and many hotel chains have done the same.

If you wait, you might get lucky and the airlines cancel your flights hence meaning your are eligible for an airfair refund.

I think it is a bit different with all NCEA assessments done in term 1. But you're probably right.

probably the same reasons we don't close ours. We're an island that relies on imports via air (often passenger)

The islands then get that from us. And are in strict control atm

In a hotel, how do they avoid maids, room service, bartender, other guests, front of house staff etc etc?

and as MF pointed out earlier, what happens to people flying in for less than 14 days?

The methodology has more holes than a Swiss cheese.

Hypothetically, Dave X is carrying coronavirus but is asymptomatic when he arrives so does not know.

He paid $30,000 for his trip in NZ. The man at the airport says "Please self isolate, Mr X."

"Sure thing!" and in he comes.

He passes 100 people leaving the airport. Then he arrives at his hotel and encounters another 10. Then he gets bored on the second day and decides to go sightseeing "just for a while to get some fresh air"....

What do you suggest?

It's a great rags to riches story that I'll write in my memoirs. Time's short - I better get the heck on with it, being risk age group - and spending the most of the 7 years I had at school smoking capstan tobacco in the bike shed - before I went on to hit the hard stuff.

Quite a backlash

Following the Prime Minister's press conference, senior Infometrics economist Brad Olsen tweeted that it was the right move, but a "gut punch to the economy".

"Business activity will experience a swift decline, and job losses will rise. Comprehensive fiscal stimulus needed ASAP. What can people do? Consider a roadie to somewhere you haven’t been in NZ to support tourism."

Former chief economist at ANZ Cameron Bagrie said the Government "better have a bazooka fiscal / govt support package to announce in the next day or so".

"The economic impact of this is massive. We are now talking a deep recession. A govt bazooka is needed to make it less deep. We are in a lose lose situation. Just don’t lose too big."

Union E tū, which has about 8000 aviation members, says the scale of disruption will be "unlike anything we've witnessed before".

"We have implemented a comprehensive plan to ensure union members and their workplace leaders are supported and can get the information they need. We have already been involved in talks and negotiations with multiple employers," Savage, the union's head of aviation, said.

"That work will escalate in the weeks ahead as employers begin consulting employees about what the shutdowns mean in their sector."

Savage said the announcement would have a flow-on effect to the domestic and regional network.

"Workers risk redundancies if these hard measures carry on too long," he said.

"The Government’s commitment to supporting the Aviation industry will be vital. Aviation is a life blood industry. It must be supported and ready to rebound soon as the restrictions finish.

"Aviation workers are skilled workers with high security clearance - the industry cannot afford to lose their skills and workers must remain ready to take off again as soon as possible."

It almost sounds as if they feel that imposing a 14 day isolation on everyone will cripple this country, so better to back off that. IMHO, the more we can restrict at the border means the more freedom we have to keep working, keep the economy ticking over. Should we prefer an easy and leaky border and when we get the virus big time, thats what will cripple the economy. It appears that short term pain for a few is less acceptable than long term pain for many. Thats really short sighted

I can’t agree it’s the strictest. The US has banned travellers from Europe full stop. Italy has 16 million people in lockdown. Etc.
