I'm glad that we went into immediate lockdown. I am glad that we're finding these cases. But I am expecting that lockdown will be extended 100%. I will also be expecting that this will likely drag out for at least a month if we're made to go even further back.

I tend to agree. But hopefully the outbreak is contained within Auckland.

Well ... They are lucky they are not in Aussie nursing $5,000 fines.

Covid-19 coronavirus Delta outbreak: Anti-lockdown protest in Auckland CBD

Protest in Tauranga, and Nelson as well  ?

Given that Coromandel is already one of the exposure sites these people seem a bit misdirected in that they should be stopping people from leaving.
Though common sense would say that connectivity to Thames, and then to all the places on the other side of the ranges.
The roadblock is completely pointless.
If you really want to help volunteer to support test sites, getting supplies and meals out to vulnerable and such positive activities.

Coromandel residents set up illegal roadblock

Leave it to Police who can legally ask people where they are going and why.

It does put those Taranaki wastewater samples in an interesting light, however.

I believe the relative of the flatmate has been ruled out as a source of potential transmission.

Hope like hell this is a work-thing similar to the MIQ maintenance worker/lift incident.

Technofreak: Some reports are suggesting the nurse may be the initial community case, or that this outbreak came from an infected MIQ person being treated at Auckland hospital.

That leads me asking why are we taking MIQ people particularly those with known infection our public hospitals for treatment?

Aren't we just asking for an outbreak?

Why don't we have a dedicated facility just for this purpose? Perhaps something like a military hospital. Yes, I know it will cost to have it sitting there, but the costs of an outbreak are significant and the lockdown is extremely disruptive.

Our Defence force is stretched dealing with MIQ duties. They would not have the resources to run military hospitals around Aotearoa.

Hospitals deal with infectious diseases all the time. If, as you assume, Auckland hospital can't keep its staff safe from covid, what makes you think a military hospital could?

I'm not assuming anything. My point being an outbreak at a dedicated facility isn't going to infect other patients because there aren't any to infect other than possibly other MIQ people and staff. It significantly reduces the spread of infection.

I find it hard to believe there wouldn't be enough capacity for such a facility. However if what you say is true, God help us.

@Technofreak your idea is not unprecedented in our past we have established dedicated isolation hospitals and it has merit. I just don't believe our stretched Defence Force would be able to cope resource wise. The time needed to establish a dedicated hospital and to obtain the required consents, supplies, property and staff would take well into 2022 and beyond. Unfortunately we do not posses China's ability to get things like this done.

The other territory that went into lockdown recently after finding one case is ACT.  If their experience is any guide, it could be 4 days plus before there is a handle on how this will play out.

Ah - that was not coming up as an option in the system - it asked "are you aged 50 or older" - not over 40.

Just re-checked, it now says 40 or older.  Try again now if that was the issue.

Booked in now for the first week of September; earliest available slot around Dunedin

not sure what is happening in Rotorua because you can get a slot the same day you look or the next day if times don't suit.

No doubt with the current bureaucracy climate it could take that long.

I believe part of the problem with the way we have been dealing with Covid is that we haven't been serious enough in our methods.

We should be on a war footing with it and that also means being able to build facilities and do some things just like we would if we were at war with a foreign power that was trying to invade New Zealand. We wouldn't be bothering with the likes of the RMA in wartime and it's my opinion nor should we when fighting Covid.

If by some miracle we got a hospital built and equipped by the beginning of 2022 and that really would be a miracle how would we man this hospital? we have chronic staff shortages in our current hospitals and we have a chronic doctor shortage in general. The Defence Force does not have the resources to man it. The NZDF has in total less than 10,000 serving personnel . This includes Infantry, Engineers, Drivers, Pilots, Sailors, Loaders, builders, mechanics, clerks etc etc. It simply is not possible for the NZDF to do it.
