Batman:

Re Maori vaccination. If they were concerned.

Why don't go to a Marae and hold a feast and dish out the jab?

(Pre level 4 that is, not now.)

They kind of did at my local marae, pre-lockdown, Sunday event.  Mainly attended by kaumatua, many of whom don't or can't drive and live nearby.

Only 2000 tests in Auckland in the last day. Yet they still picked up 20 cases 5 of which were still going around the community so were not household contacts. People in Auckland need to get tested.

Consider those people returning via air to NZ. They know they have to spend 14 days in MIQ. They've been fighting just to get into MIQ. Mentally they are at least reasonably prepared for it.

Now consider those in Akl. If they get tested, and return a positive result, they'll be into MIQ by the end of the day - no physical or mental prepared time, just pulled straight out of their lives and into essentially lock up.

There is a significant amount of testing hesitancy as a result of what people are seeing others subjected to.

There must also be a lot less people to test. Auckland has been in lockdown for 3 weeks and the list of places of interest (whilst extensive) has a finite number of visitors to them at the specific times noted.

In the early times, the Govt was pushing for "only those who have been to the places of interest on the date and time indicated" to get tested, if the majority of those people have been tested, there is much reduced reason for someone who has been isolating for weeks to go and get tested "just because". I'd likely be reluctant to get tested too if I was no where near any location of interest and those in my bubble were the same (and not symptomatic).

blame the message , at the start they said if you dont have symptoms and didn't go to a place of interest there was no need to go for a test . and since lockdown has not only stopped covid from spreading it has also stopped colds and flu so no one has symptons so people are saying why get tested then.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

If I had no symptoms and not been to a POI I wouldn't get tested.

That has to explain most of the fall.

I do notice it's hayfever season again down here in Dunedin (Yellow rings of pine pollen around puddles at my place is a give away) so that  would bring on symptions.
But if an anti-histamine helped, again I wouldn't get tested.

The plan to do surveillance testing makes sense.

Yes that does make sense but let's think it through a little further. Imagine I have covid but I don't want to get tested so I ignore it. In all likelihood, I'm going to infect others who may go on to infect others yadda yadda. Others will get tested and link it back to me anyway so I'm still going to end up in MIQ.

Now, from the point of view of the authorities, what is more likely to extend lockdown? Me having it (one case) or me and others having it ( one + x cases) ?

We're finding some interesting things out these days, such as how selfish some people are.

The Fact that the book my vaccine site sorts by location rather than time has always bugged me, looks like other had the same niggle and set about making a solution

"The site went live on September 4 and had already helped people to bring their vaccination dates forward by making it easier to view data gleaned from the Book My Vaccine site.
“The Book My Vaccine [website] is actually a pretty good site but the problem we found was it goes for location first rather than by date,” Lawrence said.
The group consists of local software engineers and developers, as well as international members from Australia and Norway, who came together for “Hackathons”, "

Set your location and it will tell you the next appointments within a set radius

If the NZH vaccine rollout numbers are accurate, we are just slightly ahead of Australia with 30.5% of eligible population fully vaccinated (as of yesterday).

Yep.

The fact that he's an MP is almost coincidental and irrelevant - any high profile person in NZ should be thoroughly condemned for doing what he did.  A unilateral decision to sabotage a vaccine rollout in the midst of a pandemic is unforgiveable.

The fact that he's an MP and party leader just makes it worse.

Isn't level 4 already a form of MIQ, just inside their own house? Also is everyone who tests positive, put into MIQ? IMO the whole 'team of 5 million' thing is about getting tested etc, for all of NZers. Short term inconvenience for long term normal living. The alternative is far worse, and the current vaccines are not a silver bullet.

Although the Eligible Pops between OZ and NZ are different, NZ is 12+ OZ is still 16+ ( 12-15 is not far off thou).

Plenty of people have tweeted similar things and there hasn't been the outrage. I'd suggest that it's highly improbable that with all the publicity today that there hasn't been a single Maori family that didn't decide to hop in their car and head to the vaccine centre for prioritised vaccines since they know they don't need to book or wait. Are you suggesting for one minute that the fact that this isn't a good thing? Because that's what I'm hearing from you.

But you're 100% right, this thread isn't for politics, so there is no need to continue this discussion.

Aus federal data (as of Saturday) says that they have 38% of eligible (16+) vaccinated.

I presume our ~31% includes the 250,000 aged 12-15% (very few vaxxed so far), but we'll still be behind.
