Sealing off Waikato is probably not realistic given the breadth or roads criss crossing the boarders.

Sorry to be pedantic but the meanings are radically different and all too commonly here on Geekzone the wrong word is used by multiple posters

A Boarder is someone who lodges somewhere in return for payment

A Border is a line separating two countries, administrative areas or similar.

In my eyes moving down to level 3 is a clear move to a suppression strategy rather than elimination.

Had this discussion with my wife earlier. It is not under control in the slightest, its like a boiling pot and the lid is ready to burst off. Any loosening of restrictions will lead to a rapid increase in cases across the country. Today's Cabinet meeting is the most important to date.

A Maori health expert has called for L4 for Waikato. You can bet the Maori caucus is very vocal about the need to protect our vulnerable communities. IMO keeping covid from our most deprived areas is Ardern's goal and its close to slipping from her fingers.

People who think Auckland is going down to level 3 will be sorely disappointed. Waikato should join level 4 with Auckland IMO and I expect SI and the rest (maybe northland stays at level 2 due to the transport links and how much that area relies on Auckland)to go down to level 1.

There is no way at all Auckland moves down and it’s just how delta works and we can’t change that except continue to eliminate and lockdown.

I imagine we’ll now need extra (extra)support from government for business and individuals now.

Eighteen months in, I wonder how much serious research has gone into refining the level restrictions to optimise health and economic outcomes.   There are additional activities that could occur in L4 with very low risk.

I suspect we would have a very different L4 if we had access to rapid saliva testing, I'm guessing that hindered any serious L4 reform.

Things like infants not being able to access GP services (despite what is said at stand-ups) is ridiculous. Either my kid sick enough to warrant a trip to the ED at that specific moment, or he has to wait. The referral for the thing that made him sick enough to go to the ED can't be done until Level 3. It's insane.

I drove through one of the "suburbs of interest" Mangere yesterday - plenty of gatherings going on with many cars in the driveway/on the street and can see the tables setup in the garage. Yet the news story of rule breaking is about some Orakei philanthropist's socially-distanced coffee in her carport.

For those looking at graphs and statistics etc. need to go and see the real world - peoples' care of the rules is quickly waning. Unless we go to level 5 (aka get police out giving a beating to rule breakers) this outbreak is not going to stop. With the government's "kindness" approach this isn't happening so without a change in attitude we will be forever at level 4.

I've just accepted it now. Sooner the government and the rest of the population accept the reality then they can focus on realistic options...

The Waikato is huge. I don't think the entire Waikato region needs to be in Level 4. Just push the border down to encompass the rest of Northern Waikato that isn't already included in the Level 4 'catchment' area.

It would be interesting if everyone posting on this forum stated their location as well as their opinion on Level change.  For me, it's Hibiscus Coast and very firmly on the fence about a change

Christchurch - South Island should be at level 1. No community cases in the South Island for what, a year or so? Even bumping up numbers allowed in events to 100 indoors won't make a significant difference. The whole mask thing is ridiculous -

Going to gym, put mask on in car to walk through the carpark, get to locker area, take mask off, perform workout, go back to locker put mask on to walk to carpark. Like the few seconds that people wear a mask going in and out of the building has any real impact on transmission which will still occur in a gym setting?

Going to restaurant- put mask on in car to walk through carpark and get seated, take mask off. Eat, drink, talk etc, put mask back on to pay and walk out. Same as gym scenario, really is there any protection?

In a public space like a supermarket, I can understand the rationale, more people, less ability to distance etc

They can keep scanning a requirement, a slight pain in the arse when you are popping in somewhere for a few minutes, but a minor inconvenience none the less.

Have they said what the trigger point will be to go back to L4 if they do drop to L3?

Right now there are still 20 +/- cases a day and whilst they feel good about them being linked, linked or not, they are still infectious in the community. Will it take case numbers to go to 30, 40, 50? whats the magic number that puts the brakes back on Auckland?

If they stay at L4, are they chasing rainbows? Is there anywhere that has successfully eliminated Delta to zero cases? Our PM is banking all her political capital (and future UN status) on the elimination strategy, but if its something that can't be done and we do end up having to live with it (which I think is more than likely), what does that mean for all the pain that the lockups has brought?

I don't envy the officials position at all

thats pretty standard for mangere at any time.

Possibly best success in fighting delta.

Taiwan have taken a major outbreak with two smaller incidents along the way down to days of zero and low single digit.

What are they going to do to stop inter-household transmission in South Auckland.

They MUST know it is happening.

They MUST know why.

They aren't saying anything at the stand-ups, becaus ethey know there'll be vitriol on social media.

BUT, it is costing Aucklanders a fortune, and most of them are behaving.

Are there prayer meetings? Has it got into the gangs? This will go on till Christmas if they don't stop the bubble popping.

I'm frustrated now. I've been at home for 5 weeks (not that I mind being home), but I'm seeing my employer dying slowly from a thousand cuts, and I won't be the only one.

Lockdowns don't work with delta for a range of reasons.

Just get vaccinated and carry on.

Those who choose not to get vaccinated they can face their own consequences.

The being nice approach by the PM has failed this time, although the alternate approach in Oz hasn't worked either.

Very low number of vaccines given out yesterday 26,673

She needs to give us a carrot. Vaccinate by x date and you'll be able to travel, or others could come in without MiQ, or whatever.
