The Spinoff is fine for data visualisation, but I trust their opinion about as much as I'd trust Stuff.co.nz.

At least I know what the Herald's problems are.

The Herald is not a source I would trust for anything. We go where our prejudices take us.

wow. this shows we were going nowhere, with level 4, and nowhere with level 3.

Yep, all the rules in the world won't help when a few don't bother following L4 or L3, or get tested. Elimination has occurred for the many that are following the rules but it won't stop (or it will be really slow) due to the non compliant few.

Basically it seems to be a holding pattern, and hoping. Maybe eventually they will get back down to zero, but seems unlikely at this stage. They are now priming people up for future days of higher numbers. I wish more people would dob the flouters in. I hear of stories where people say they see people breaking the lockdown rules, but they didn't report them.

We seem to be pinning hope on very high vaccination. But a lot of people though aren't going to get vaccinated, I already know quite a few who aren't, and people who I didn't expect not to be. Some are hoping a better vaccine will come along.  So I can't see us getting to very high levels without something else occurring.

This isn't good for Auckland and Covid.  Huge gathering reported https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-complete-carnage-reports-of-huge-gathering-in-west-auckland/OURNRWTZY7WN7SUDM4GXECS4PE/

From that article:

"Would you mind asking the Prime Minister what the deal is, as she keeps protecting the gangs, they are the ones blatantly not sticking to the rules and spreading the virus.

I'd be interested to know if any of these cases are from 'Community' spread - ie., actually just walking past someone, or being in the same shop.

I suspect a very high percentage of them are from much closer contact than that.

My Opinion. Back to Level 4 for two weeks, then *if* Public Health and the Police (because it sounds like it needs some enforcement now) can ringfence the group of rule-deniers in that time, straight to level 2.

Wont happen, but dreams are free.

They have said previously that it is mainly spreading in houses and to a lessor extent businesses.

I think most people realise that Auckland moved down levels too early before they had ringfenced the outbreak. They kept saying there was no 'widespread' community transmission. But there was obviously still lower grade CT occurring. But will they backtrack? I don't think so, I think it is more about suppression and I think they could move down levels next wee, as they are relying on high vaccination levels. They have already primed us that we won't be going back to level 1 as long as we have Delta in the community.

Either way the Aussies will be putting pressure on the NZ govt to get moving:

Didn't Bloomfield recently say the gangs were cooperating with MoH and the contract tracers? LOL

If all the people at a gathering are inside their cars, is it a huge gathering?

The Herald also needs to look up the meaning of "carnage".

Gangs and their associates, and possibly linked antivax Evangelicals .
We may end up having to wait till it burns through them, or leaders see its just better business to vaccinate.

Suppose we lack places in remand or prisons, and laws as they are they just go straight out onto the street.

I can't see rest of New Zealand supporting anything but tighter Auckland borders ?
Do people in rest of NZ want to forgo zero covid they have now ?

You would be down at level 1 but for Auckland.

It’s going to be interesting to see what prevails as time goes on: Aucklanders desire to get out or Rest of New Zealand’s desire for Auckland to stay put.

And Auckland might be at Level 1 if we hadn't taken on a huge proportion of the country's MIQ capacity.

Also, whatever NSW does, it's going to be without Gladys.

It’ll become irrelevant. If it’s rooted in Auckland the rest of NZ will get it sooner or later and restrictions won’t make sense.

They got pushed by the Aussies about opening up a bubble. You just wait. Christmas without family = political suicide. Meanwhile the Aussies can come and go freely,

Please no body bring up the line "oh so you are accepting deaths". Everything we do has an element of risk. Get vaccinated, carry on with life.

Level 2, of course, will ruin it.

And keeping the border closed will just SLOW the spread to the rest of NZ, it won't stop it. Once we go LVL2 in Auckland, it will spread in restaurants and bars. It will get to a worker crossing the border and go with them to other parts of the North Island. Give it two weeks.

I think the Auckland border will stay in force a while longer and yes Covid will get across, but when it does I would expect an attempt will be made to trap it (some level of lockdown on a local scale), contact trace, and wipe it out. Eventually this probably wont work but it might the first few times. Be silly not to give it a shot.
