Not sure what you folks expected?

There's no way Akl could go to L2 without disaster.

There's no way that locking down to L4+ to eliminate would be accepted without riots.

Easing up on some activities that have been identified as lower risk seems sensible.

And to an extent. Exactly what has been going on anyway..

(street meetings of family groups is how we got here)

If they remain masked and don't snog and hug however.... different story.

A few crumbs of ifs and maybes with no commitment on when or what is required to activate the easing. Its Covid and its Delta, the only constant is that change is needed to both combat it and learn to live with it.

Handsomedan:

Well...Auckland to remain at level 3 but with the ability to meet others outside up to a maximum of 10 people.

Seems...rubbish.

It is pretty much what the easing of restrictions overseas were. This is living with the virus.

IMO Auckland had a choice to get it eliminated, but too many selfish flouters decided to flout the rules, not enough people reported them, and the government didn't clamp down on them. Then some of the media were undermining elimination, which epidemiologists said was possible, as the virus was picked up early. 99.9% of Aucklanders have done the right thing and been let down badly IMO. Now NZ has to wait until very high vaccination rates. The PM even said today that it was an 'Awkward Transition'.

Hospitalizations are also rising again, up to 30 today. In the peak previously, it was 40. So it is getting worse.

I misread that - had a vision of you as Jake the Muss in the carpark at the flying jug.

When are they going to get, Auckland is ALREADY treating lvl3 like lvl1/2 just without access to some public venues.

What the DO need to start doing is handing out extreme fines for non compliance, ie $500 for not wearing mask or correctly 1st offense, 2nd offence $5000, 3rd offense Prison sentence (just like Spanish flu, wear it or lose ur freedom). The amount of "essential workers" i see with masks pulled below their nose pisses me off.

People are meeting strangers at the beach or the parks and stopping to chat while their dogs play/tangle without masks being warn at all.

Families have already been meeting, I mean seriously were they not aware of any of this? I guess such is ruling a zone without living in the zone (I hear, see, speak no evil etc).

Stop buckling due to non Auck lvl2 folks whinging about public venues and the such.

1. Back lvl 4 as you cannot trust people and lvl4 was like lvl3 should have been, compliance wise.

2. Rapid testing available for essential workers and those crossing boarders like Aus is rolling out (the 15 min DIY nasal swab kits)

3.Fines escalating in severity for multiple offenses of lack of mask use compliance and or social distancing

4. Start explaining to the average person about viral load, spam it across the internet and TV and why masks are our 2nd biggest (some would say biggest) tool we have available.

5. Show the 20-35yo's real data, not skewed data, on the effectiveness vaccines are making on covid. Like masks, people simply don't know (care) what they dont know, they young and just want to live life as mortality seems so unlikely when we are whippa snappers.

Gotta target the youngsters with reality not threats or fear. They not going to listen to reason when they got moron podcasters who have had a small viral load of covid brushing it off as over exaggerated. Drop them into the heart of India's outbreak. Show them the data from Israel for 20yo+ vaccinations and what a massive difference vaccines have made on hospitilisations and or death. People take a quick glance at Israel and think, oh it didnt help, most dont know 1/3 of the pop is 14yo and under.

Anyway, she said Sailing, does that mean I can take the yacht out now? I presume it isnt limited to kiteboarding/windsurfing etc.....

i didn't watch the live announcement but from what i read in the media,

correct me if i'm wrong, govt is saying

1. we've given up on elimination but they are not saying it

2. we're going to open up for businesses to do business but not sure when

anyone knows if there are:

3. any targets being set - eg vaccination, who should get regular testing and how/where

4. any mandates being set - eg no vaccine no xyz

and i hope the hospitals have a plan, or if they don't yet, will soon

It is still going on.

But, No I don't think they have said they are giving up on elimination, as the elimination approach is needed until vaccination is high enough.

They 'eliminate while the vaccinate' is the wording they are using.

1. Not officially, but given how they have handled (or not) the situation, I don't think realistically making things easier and easier for people to non comply for the sake of appeasing those not effected by the lockdown, Id expect they are just stretching out hoping for numbers of single doses in the age group lagging to improve.

2. Well, that is how Jacinda answers everything, I "think", that is the "hope" etc. She doesn't speak in certainties or decisiveness. They did zero about stopping the US religious lead disinformation on the cannabis referendum, I do not expect them to start making a major stance on being decisive now. So yeah, no plan as far as I see.

Yeah I only think I heard it, it was the last thing I think she mentioned when talking about recreational activities. And I hear ya, as do probably 60% of Auckland. The single reason most people pay the levy to live in Paradise, to access paradise.

Yep, water probably ~15deg. You got a thicker vest for the vitals?

Going to be mayhem first day back on the water, but I may have misheard that so, will listen to the recording.
