TeaLeaf: This is mostly why Im so annoyed there is no accountability for those flouting the rules here in Auckland. I do not have good chances should I get a big viral load a month or two after the 2nd shot given my issues. Again, footpaths are packed, very very few people wearing masks. They need to make it any point where you cross within 2m of others you need a mask.

In the past month I've still had quite a bit of travel around the country, and one thing that's very clear is that mask use in Wellington is soooo much higher than in other places I've been to. In the Wellington CBD you'll see probably 80% of people wearing masks in the street, and compliance in stories and places like cafes and bars is pretty good overall.

I was in Tauranga on the weekend and it was a totally different story. I won't name places (because they're really no different to other places I've been to in other towns such as Rotorua and Napier as two examples from the week prior), but walking into a bar where there was no table service at all (everybody ordered at the bar) and where mask use outdoors and indoors was pretty much voluntary is certainly a bit of a wakeup call, and a start reminder that many people really don't grasp the fact we didn't beat Covid and win.

The next couple of months in particular is going to be incredibly tough for NZers. We mocked the rest of the world for so long, and now karma is giving us a gentle nudge.

MileHighKiwi:

I'm struggling with the mask wearing. I had to leave a store on the weekend because I couldn't breath comfortably. I've been close to a panic attack at New World because I find it hard to breath (and see!, lol)

I generally take it off the second I leave a premises but it does mean I am less likely to do stuff if it involves compulsory mask wearing.

I think most of it is arbitrary anyway. My mate is a nurse and he said most people wear masks wrong, contaminate them and they don't offer much protection, but it gives us a sense of control.

The effectiveness of masks and face coverings does differ significantly. Many cloth masks people wear actually do offer pretty limited protection, medical grade masks are a lot better, but ultimately if you want protection a properly fitted (being sealed is the most important aspect) N95 or KN95 mask is the gold standard. If you're in close contact with others then even a mask won't protect you as you also need eye protection as aerosol / droplets can just as easily enter the body through the eyes. Some companies are now mandating eye protection as an added layer (Air NZ being one such example with all their ground staff).

Masks overall are a good thing, but it is true to say they aren't a magic bullet that will magically stop the spread of Covid like some people would have you believe.

You keep saying that, but its more case that "its not here" [in my town]  Same as why vaccinations and tests are low. And when they get cases as per the Waikato, masks, vaccinations, tests, and scans spike sharply upwards. Too late then of course.

I'm disappointed that it looks like mask wearing will remain even when hit vaccinated targets. Short term wearing like shopping in heated areas and not doing anything strenuous is fine.

You’ll get used to it. It might take a while but it will become completely normal in a few months.

My 7 and 9 year olds have been wearing them every day for 13 months when they are at school.

They absolutely provide protection. They certainly aren’t perfect but there’s plenty of evidence that they make a material difference to infection rates.

I suggest you jump on Michael Morrah's Twitter - he was one of the most effective investigative journalists during the pandemic and found a number of instances where what we were told about the response did not stack up with what was happening on the ground, most notably around border worker testing.

The responses he got online ranged from allegations of treason to people suggesting that because we hadn't totally flubbed the response like other countries that stuff like this didn't matter.

The pandemic has created this weird blend of nationalism and chest beating for some people that some have adopted almost as an identity.

3M make masks which are N95 standard and have exhaust valves to improve the breathing ease.

They're more expensive than the basic item commonly used but you may find they help. They're called Aura. They are marked P2 standard which is the EU equivalent of N95.

Everybody who went to Six60 earlier in the year and the media who bragged about us being able to have a 50,000 person concert because we'd beaten Covid and won?

If you're buying masks with exhaust valves just make sure they filter exhalation on the exhaust valve - many still don't (because they're not designed for Covid) and it means while the N95 rating might stop you from catching somebody else's Covid, it won't protect others when you decide to exhale and give them your Covid!

Yes, one battle might have been won but the war wasn't over by any means. We got complacent.

I see a premium article headline in the Herald just now. Our officials kept Pfizer waiting 6 weeks before they had a meeting with Pfizer.

Problem with carrots is you penalise the good people who got jabbed and benefit the slackers. Then when booster time arrives which is near, everyone will hold off until you give me $200 otherwise your target won't be met.

This keeps coming up and I don't agree with it. I think most people do the right thing because it is the right thing. Of course there will always be some slackers but so what if they take unfair advantage of the carrot? I don't give a damn about that. Let them have the $200 or whatever if that is what it takes. It doesn't kill the rest of us to let a few wonkers game the system. It might kill some of us if we don't.

For this to matter we need to know a couple of things:

1) How long does it usually take to go through a process for approving a negotiating team;

2) If this was the same as usual, why wasn't it expedited in light of the pandemic?

3) If this was longer than usual, why?

Seems the thing that makes 2) and 3) worth getting out of your tree about is 1), which we don't have enough context to judge.

I've often wondered at the efficacy of the exhausted/ventilated masks.

Also - I assume they are one and done - i.e. non-reusable?
