dont think ramping up vaccination rates sooner would have made much difference, the areas in Auckland being hit are still only at 30-40% vaccinated months after vaccinations were ramped up. Keeping Auckland at level 4 would have done nothing to the cases , from anecdotal evidence the areas that had the cases were not at level 4 anyway and they weren't going to eliminate Delta so they did what was best for the majority of Auckland and moved to level 3. What is coming is going to be along race and poverty lines. The worse off you are , the worse Covid will effect you.

A huge chunk of our population only became eligible for the vaccine very recently, so quite hard to believe it wouldn't have 'made much difference'.

Also the vaccine availability was limited to a handful of drive-through sites and some specific vaccination centres, whereas now many pharmacies, GPs etc are providing it.

This has been the case in first world countries globally.

More likely to be living in cramped housing with poor ventilation etc, more likely to be classed as "essential workers" / unable to work from home, more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck without any financial buffer, more likely to have co-morbidities.

It's been that way for centuries. Polio a notable exception when it hit the children of the well-to-do harder than the poor.  Now that really sprung the US government into action - it's just not the way was supposed to work.

In Hamilton on Wednesday afternoon / evening and the amount of traffic around was just like a normal week day. The only difference was the queue at KFC was out onto the road.

Heard it is for Northland. How can it take all day to interview a single case.

I wonder at what point the government gave up on elimination, because we are going to be in lockdown even longer than we would have, if we had had a very strict level 4 lockdown for longer. The problem is the public doesn't get much information on the cases and where they are occurring which also prevents the media asking questions.

I see Prof Baker is tonight recommending all of NZ excluding Auckland switches to elimination, and Auckland sticks to suppression until vaccination is high enough. It makes sense to have different strategies in different parts. Is using states on Oz as an example. Tasmania haven't had a case for 500 days.

Hardly surprising but Id like a real update on cases

1. How many are already isolating (so no real issue)

2. How many were infectious in the community

3. How many are new

Urgent unplanned press conferences are never good news.

And how many of the cases have had their first or second shot.

Do you have a link to what I bolded?

I think its obvious we gave up on elimination (and used the same strategy for containment while we use the next tool, vaccinations) Due to poor compliance by a few that removes elimination and keeps it simmering. I thought this was old news?

Northland to move to alert level 3 from 23:59 tonight for four days until 23:59 Tuesday night. The case has not been cooperative with contact tracers.
