dont think ramping up vaccination rates sooner would have made much difference, the areas in Auckland being hit are still only at 30-40% vaccinated months after vaccinations were ramped up. Keeping Auckland at level 4 would have done nothing to the cases , from anecdotal evidence the areas that had the cases were not at level 4 anyway and they weren't going to eliminate Delta so they did what was best for the majority of Auckland and moved to level 3. What is coming is going to be along race and poverty lines. The worse off you are , the worse Covid will effect you.

A huge chunk of our population only became eligible for the vaccine very recently, so quite hard to believe it wouldn't have 'made much difference'.

Also the vaccine availability was limited to a handful of drive-through sites and some specific vaccination centres, whereas now many pharmacies, GPs etc are providing it.

do you think the uptake would have been any better when the need wasnt there to get vaccinated , because even now the majority in the areas it is needed are still not getting vaccinated. South Auckland was in group 4 from the outset and the uptake has always been low.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Heard it is for Northland. How can it take all day to interview a single case.

I wonder at what point the government gave up on elimination, because we are going to be in lockdown even longer than we would have, if we had had a very strict level 4 lockdown for longer. The problem is the public doesn't get much information on the cases and where they are occurring which also prevents the media asking questions.

I see Prof Baker is recommending all of NZ excluding Auckland switches to elimination, and Auckland sticks to suppression until vaccination is high enough. It makes sense to have different strategies in different parts. Is using states on Oz as an example. Tasmania haven't had a case for 500 days.

Do you have a link to what I bolded?

I think its obvious we gave up on elimination (and used the same strategy for containment while we use the next tool, vaccinations) Due to poor compliance by a few that removes elimination and keeps it simmering. I thought this was old news?

That's not what the govt says as far as I know and everyone here's been telling me

Breaking: Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins will hold a press conference at 6:30pm.

Urgent unplanned press conferences are never good news.

It has now been confirmed it Northland in level 3 for 4 days. The case has apparently not been cooperative and may have had another traveller. FFS how are they able to leave Auckland?

( How can it take all day to interview a single case. )

It was said in announcement the person has NOT been co-operative with revealing contacts.
Had to use police to track them down as they were not co-operative with being contacted.
Used false document to cross border as a essential social services category.
So everyone suffers.

Northland has very low vaccination rate with some high profile Antivax, lovely.  !

Northland in L3 due to the low vaccination rates which is below the national average. Not confirmed yet but Hipkins believes they were able to get a permit to travel by providing false information.

TV3 news. But the minister of health has confirmed that the case has not been cooperative, so that would be why they are continuing to try and extract that info from them.

I am so angry that because of the FUG one must restrain myself.

Because of this selfish individual an entire region goes up an alert level and now everyone suffers.

Why do you assume it's a male? It could be a female.

Sometimes an outbreak can improve vaccination rates. Sometimes not.

Hipkins has already said he doesn't know if they hand gang connections so unless you have insider information I don't see why you think it.

Why can't they name the person, so other people can fill in the gaps in their travel?
