I was in the public library earlier today. Heaps of elderly people still visiting, including at least 2-3 who were seriously coughing/sneezing.

Based on observation, Kiwis are not the most compliant group of people I’ve ever come across!

Our driving stats show how well rules are followed, for example.

True, but there hasn't been any clear instruction to stay away from public places. More of a suggestion. As soon as they tell people "do not go out", there will be a lot more compliance.

Here’s what happens when the rules are ignored:

“A ski party came back from Veneto in Italy four days after they were told to self-isolate, but unfortunately some didn’t," said Mr Blakeley's son, a 54-year-old account director. After the coronavirus outbreak took hold in Italy, all Britons returning from the northern region of the country were told to self-isolate (see video below).

"One went to a birthday party at a restaurant and my father was there. That’s where it happened."

For context, Mr Blakeley died aged 88 alone in the isolation unit in Manchester.

To be honest, locking down a country as soon as possible imho is not an overreaction and will be sooner or later unevitable. It's not giving up, it's gaining valuable time to prepare for the wave and to secure the supply chains. Anybody believin' "that it will not be as dramatic as announced" didn't catch the train. Things showed too often that when a crisis plan has been agreed, it most likely has been overruled by the current situation - especially when you have to ensure, that even the th****st politician has to get informed/understand whats going on. This is wasting valuable time to learn from others and to do, what others already have been proven to be effective.

The two from wellington arrived on Saturday. Given the self isolation (NOT quarantine) restriction was announced on Saturday, and the around 10 hour flight time from the USA, it is unlikely the restrictions had any bearing on their travel.

The other man from Dunedin had returned from Europe, and has been in NZ for at least 5 days, so it is not possible that the restrictions had any impact on his travel.

We won't know the impact from Saturdays rush for 3 - 26 days... I think we should be undertaking aggressive social distancing in NZ to cover that time. This is the most critical period for us.

With hindsight, Saturdays announcement was not "going early" - Issues in wider Europe had been apparent for over a week, and likewise, eairly warning signs from the USA were clear to see.

Fortunately we have the knowledge of countries that have gone before us in this.

Singapore & Korea have proven that with super aggressive measures, this can be contained. Sadly we need to follow their example.

Would have been nice to have opted out of this, and merrily enjoyed ourselves cut off at the bottom of the world, sending ship loads of food to locked down countries.

This is why they should have made the self isolation retrospective, when the new measures came into force. Anyone who had come into NZ should have been required to self isolate for the difference in days they have already been here for. This is another hole where the virus has got through into NZ.

The virus doesn't know dates and cutoffs.

There will be some concerned Air NZ Staff,

According to the MOH, they were in 1B and 1C on the AKL-WLG leg, so were sitting facing the cabin crew in the jump seat for takeoff and landing....

Interesting on the USA-WLG leg (presumably) the father was in a lie flat in business class in 4A, while the son was back "slumming it" in Prem. economy (10H)

NZ sometimes seems to think that we are immune to these things that go on in the rest of the world, and it will never affects us in the same way.

Yeap. NZ now looks way behind what other countries are doing. I would have expected today that they would announce they would be closing schools, unis etc for a period of time and then assess cases in a few weeks. Potentially I would have thought this virus could burn itself, out if everyone was socially distanced for a few weeks.

We don't want to introduce things in reaction to growing cases.

The time to stop cases growing is yesterday, due to the long incubation time!

Did you watch the media release?

Symptomatic in flight. Arriving the day of the announcement. And father +1 day. Hence being tested and isolated and close contacts sought.
