For people who are interested in how pandemics work and how they can be prevented and controlled, the Netflix doco series Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak is excellent (albeit not really ‘mainstream TV’). It first aired in January so it’s totally up-to-date and on-point. What’s interesting and scary about it is that it was being made before COVID19 was known and doesn’t specifically cover COVID19 - but predicts exactly what is happening now just a few weeks later.

6.7 million people in San Francisco & five surrounding counties ordered to stay home unless buying food, fuel, walking near their home, etc. They have been told to stay away from neighbours. (I imagine Westfield shares in NZ and Australia must be taking a real hammering at the moment.)

Yet another example of wanting to foist a non-criminal matter into the hands of an already overstretched organisation. Yes police can assist, if need be, when self-centred self-entitled a-holes decide not quarantine themselves but overall it's a health matter not a police one.

IMO its a death matter. Many overseas have died when they dodnt need to, even those that are not infected as the health systemn was overwhelmed. Norway is hiring new police officers for this. Its a security issue for the public

It could be a good start at recouping all the billions this is going to cost all of us. I wonder how we are going to pay for this? Amazing that it all started in that horrid market that someone posted the video of above. There doesn't seem to be any talk about what is being done to prevent those things, apparently they are common in some other countries too. It is just going to happen again, because we have already been warned by experts that this would happen eventually, and have already had SARS, MERS etc . It feels to me like mother nature getting back at humans for doing that to these beautiful animals.

Id rather deport than fine. Im sure all the many many other outbreaks werent from a seafood market. Not sure how though havent looked. It wuill always happen when bats and camels are riddled with viruses

It's a "wet market." It's only shocking if you haven't visited New York / San Francisco / Toronto's Chinatown.

Here's a story about fresh water "slider" turtles. They grow to about 4 cm long. They are sold in New Zealand as pets. These turtles are cute, but considered one of the most invasive species in the world.

In San Francisco, they are illegal, because children were putting them in the mouth. They are covered in Salmonella, common bacterial disease. However larger turtles are legal.

My late friend Mark Berman, a real fire brand, saw them being openly sold in Chinatown. He confronted a shop owner, who pretended not to speak English, even though she was conversing with a customer in fluent English moments before. She then attempted to gather up the tanks, and move them into the rear.

My friend would have none of it, and grabbed all tanks, even ones she was holding. He enlisted me to help. The owner gave us a brief silent look of hate, cursed us in Chinese and English, and went back to her counter as though nothing had happened.

They were given to the "Sea Turtle Restoration Project" at Earth Island.

As mentioned, only the tiny slider turtles were illegal. Everyday I walked through Chinatown, and would see no end of horrors. The worst were meter deep chests of live frogs, where it was apparent the ones on the bottom were crushed, and "kiddie pools" with terrified live alligator snapping turtles, waiting to be eaten (about 80 cm, 90 KG).

I'd frequently eat in Chinatown, and a Chinese friend would show me that all kinds of mammals were on the menu. She explained they were put in a large pot of cold water, and then boiled alive. It was considered "cleaner", because the animals would defecate in the pot in their panic, and tastier because the stress improved the meat..

I understand this trade was slowing down even before the Corona virus struck, due to SARS.

It's not established for certain that the virus originated as a human disease (jumped species) in the Wuhan market.
I didn't see that video - I'm not interested, it's not verifiable or from a reliable source, just someone posting something on youtube.
I've never seen anything verifying that bats were being sold in the Wuhan wet market.
I've seen one claiming to show that, but it turned out that it wasn't shot in Wuhan, wasn't even shot in China, and was shot years ago.
Even if they were, it's very unlikely to have transmitted to humans directly from bats anyway. The RNA is different from coronaviruses found in bats, there's probably an intermediate host, it hasn't been confirmed what it was, it's been speculated it might have been pangolins or snakes, nobody actually knows - it could have been from budgies or cats. They do need to find out if possible.
MERS came out of the blue as a novel coronavirus, probably originally from bats, probably transmitted to humans via camels, probably nothing at all to do with "wet markets" or whatever.
There's no doubt that wet markets and the eating of bush meat, wild animals etc poses risks. So does keeping pets, you could get toxoplasmosis from cute kittens, aspergillosis from your budgie etc. Potentially terrible diseases come out of stupid practices in the developed world, BSE probably from feeding scrapie infected meat meal to cows. Now there's a serious potential ticking time-bomb with related CWD in North America, potentially worse than BSE, infected wild cervids shed prions through body fluid and infect each other. If that could infect humans - and it's not known that it can't - then we've got a huge problem.

There is no point China/Chinese bashing over Covid-19. We could just as easily be fighting a more easily transmissible MERS, much the same but far more lethal - and where it emerged has nothing to do with China.

It's too bad they disinfected the Wuhan wet market before they re-tested, as the tests they did carry out did not suggest that there was virus in the areas of the market where live animals were sold. It's pretty likely that someone already with Covid-19 came to the market and spread it from there. That's a problem, because until the intermediate host species is found, then there's the possibility that after being (hopefully) wiped out, covid-19 could re-emerge. Disinfecting the market was not an entirely stupid idea, and not done to "hide evidence". The other CTs that the virus escaped from a lab doing bioweapon research have been debunked.

There's been plenty of warning that something like Covid-10 would inevitably come, could have been a flu strain, could have been something else. How prepared was the world to fight it? Not very - so stupid us.

Stop blaming China folks. There's no point - it's too late, it serves no purpose, and it will make things worse. There's only one race of people - the human race.

Or because it's becoming uneconomical to keep commercial passenger aircraft in the air, and soon there may be no way to get home? Once that happens, passenger movement comes to an end anyway. Airports will remain open for freight movement.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Australia and UK are giving the same advise. Its mainly due to the closing window of opportunity to get home. As more countries close borders and airlines stop flying the ability for an individual to be able to get home diminishes. Getting to NZ from the other side of the world requires a stop somewhere along the way and the number of places you can stop is getting smaller by the day.
