Apparently Hipkins told Checkpoint that there is an option for Aucklanders to be given an allocated time to leave Auckland over Xmas/New Years to help manage traffic.

However this is so dumb that it seems likely to just be a nest-making excerise to seem the final decision seem more palatable. It cannot possibly be serious.

How can you contact trace when its evolving so fast? LOI's were mentioned today, too many. Do you want LOI's to be here are the places its not at? Its gone way to far to manage, that's why we have suppression. Some countries gave up on daily case numbers and tracing. Its ALL about vaccinations.

Because we're being held behind a border 'in case it spreads' but not putting much resource into stopping it spreading at all.

It's maddening.

So Auckland needs 90% x2 across ALL THREE DHBs before it can come down to L2 (not the Waikato region DHBs don't) but then we'll still need a border when we get there because other regions haven't got their vaccination rates above 90%.

Are you volunteering to go into lockdown to be inclusive?

Ive been in lockdown, Im prepared for lockdown. My purchases last weekend were based on that. But if you wish to be divisive so as to separate those IN an AKL lockdown as superior and lovely as we (non AKL) are not (yet), then go for it. This is pathetic and its divisive.

"Are you volunteering to go into lockdown to be inclusive?" Wow, happy New Zealand.

I thought the divisive part was non AKLDers being happy we aren't there, but believe it or not, SOME of us feel for them, but as it seems, as we are NOT in AKL, we are stupid and lucky and dont care. Thats BS.

This thread is in the gutter

Watch this get hosed down and walked back either later today or tomorrow

Having to book a time to leave Auckland is simply not politically sellable.....  Hipkins will have realised it as soon as he said it... but once it was out,,,

Blakeley summed it up well on the news last night. Basically NZ will relax things down to a level where the health system can cope with cases, living with the virus. So we may need to go back into more restrictions if cases rise too much for the health system. Then it is basically a waiting game until a better vaccine comes along or. The concern is worse strains and there is now a worse strain of Delta which  has a slightly higher R value which is likely to replace the current one. It seems to be becoming the dominant strain in UK . This seems to be what all countries are doing that are choosing to live with the virus. But some countries may not be following this approach, I am not sure if China is as the still seem to be about elimination.

Exactly. Some people caused a situation where most people who complied have missed out, so suppression is now the deal. We will end up doing what all countries are already doing, but at least we bought some time, at least deaths are low (very low as most of the previous deaths were in rest home incursions and not the overall populous.) Ideal? No. But its better than NSW and VIC (so far)

cokemaster: The first few minutes of One news tonight (6PM) is depressing: Protestors swamping Vaccination sites (in anticipation of a confrontation with the PM).

That would be ok if it would be correct, IF this was the mindset of most Kiwis. It's not. Its like there are 20 cases of the flu In the Wairarapa, but the headline is flu outbreak in NZ

The deal with Covid is either an opinion or its a fact. Someone needs to stand up and say its fact and non believers are stupid. Anyways, lets all get vaccinated and cast them aside.

Not insinuating that the antivax is massive movement (eg. Representative of a district or town) but the imagery and the actual number of folks assembled was disappointing.

Like I say, I have real troubles accepting this was a serious suggestion at any point and not one designed to create a low-bar for them to come in over.

But I'm more than certain the whole thing will be walked back anyway.

Thanks Alasta. Im not sure what the issue is. Maybe we let people run free or maybe we use the Vaccine Certs to manage it? Not much point having vaccine certs if we dont manage them? Or we forget them and let everyone roam free?

I get that although you won't believe that. What resource do you want so it doesn't spread? The team of 5 million or 2 million are the only ones that can do that. If AKL gets to above 90% which IIRC some parts are heading well above that, and some aren't, I doubt that you will be held back over a few digits/DHB

1000% agree. I see it as white noise, squeaky wheel, not big numbers but LOUD numbers. Sometimes you have to have faith that this is not Alabama, and discard the BS. That's my stance.

If you live anywhere in Level 3 and leave your property you need to proceed like you are entering one big LOI. Wear a mask.

I think Northland, capital of antivax NZ, should be in level 4 lockdown indefinitely until they get 100% vaccinated

Anyone who has ever driven out of Auckland on a peak holiday day will know that enforcing vax certificates or anything else is pure fantasy.  Maybe Aucklanders will just act like cyclists on the harbour bridge and force through any barrier, the police didn't seem too bothered about that.  Personally I have no great desire to leave Auckland during the holidays but I can imagine the frustration of anyone with family or holiday house on the other side.

I'll quite likely have to cross backwards and forwards through the border for work during this time. I don't fancy queuing for hours in either direction to get to and from work. It's going to make for some very long days if they persist with some sort of check at the border. Perhaps they'll have an express lane. Second thoughts that makes too much sense.

The dilemma that they need to avoid is "people smuggling" by using a ute, car boot or back of a truck. Will they search cars and trucks?

Otherwise its just paper security. If someone really wants to get out, I'm sure they'll be able to find a sucker who will take them for $500.
