Western Australia to stay closed for Christmas with border not reopening until at least late January

Western Australia will wait until as late as early-February to reopen its interstate borders in a move the premier says will save 200 lives.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/nov/05/western-australia-border-restrictions-stay-closed-for-christmas-borders-not-reopening-until-at-least-late-january

It appears that Flight Centre are threatening to launch legal action against the Western Australian government, because they won't open soon enough.

Flight Centre’s chief executive, Graham Turner, said he believed his legal team had a “reasonable chance of success” and he would know his course of action by the end of the week.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/nov/08/doctors-say-flight-centre-should-pull-its-head-in-after-legal-threat-to-wa-borders

Regarding borders (international in NZ case, or interestate/internation in Australia) the most vocal opponents seem to be those who would directly earn dollars from having open borders or lobbyists working for those.

I suspect the situation for Flight Centre is starting to get a bit desperate.

Also those scenes from Sylvia Park are do mindnumbingly frustrating. Behold, the reason why we spent two weeks extra at Step 3.

To get to over 80% double vax. Today marks NZ's freedom day, point of no return. Mark your calendars 10/11/21. It's been 18 months in the making.

Thanks 90% of Kiwis.

Technically it was 11:59pm last night - and given the protests and the inevitable spread that will have caused in main centres that don't have Covid, I think the real red-letter day was yesterday.

I'm confused as to how you think there is going to be "inevitable spread" as a result of yesterday's protests, when you're also saying those main centres don't have covid?

I think a lot of people simply want yesterday's protest to be a super spreader event just so they can say "told you so". Unfortunately for them our understanding of how Covid spreads and experiences of large scale outdoor protests particularly in Australia show that the chances of this happening are non existent.

Even at large scale protests in Australia where there has been significant CT at the time (1000+ cases being reported daily) there have only been small numbers of cases reported, and even then not necessarily any real certainty in most cases that they were a result of the protests.

Covid spread occurs primarily indoors when in close proximity to people, not outdoors.

There were apparently plenty of people who traveled to Wellington for it. The rest of the country can move around all it likes, even the bits with positive wastewater results (which are a week behind anyway).

And the outsidey, flag-waving, tennis balls threatening the Prime Minister bit? No. But all the offshoot pub lunches, dinners, cafes, catch-ups and so on before and after the event? Not a chance those were all in an equally outdoor setting. Unless all those people who decided to show up apparently arrived by car and then turned around and went directly home again.

Sooner or later some smart arse  is going to get hold of covid and deliberately spread it. Wouldnt be surprised if it happens at a protest event.

It's fine, I call that accelerated natural immunization booster. but not good for hospitals though.

Handle9:

It's not as black and white as that. The employer has a number of obligations, several of which are in conflict with each other. They have the obligation to keep their employees safe. To determine if their employees are at risk of infection at work they need to do a risk assessment. If this risk assessment shows a low risk of infection at work they, as a reasonable employer, can not mandate vaccination and have no right to ask their employees if they are vaccinated.

If there is a significant risk then they can mandate controls, up to and including vaccination however they need to consult on this. They must at all times behave as a reasonable employer which means that they can't dictate controls that are out of proportion to the risks. They also have an obligation to keep the vaccination status of their employees confidential - it is their employees private medical information. They can only disclose it with the permission of the employee.

It's a very complex area and has already proved litigious. It should be clarified with legislation.

The request for information seems to be broadening -

Initially, it was letter of undertaking from us that any techs attending a site are fully vaccinated. Marginal in that we are disclosing potentially private medical information to an outside source, but broad enough in my view to be reasonable.

We are now getting requests for proof of vaccination for all staff (copies of vaccination cards, mycovid app stuff etc)

We are also getting this, as well as supposedly requiring names and DOB for each person, under the guise of the Covid vaccine order.

Just where is this going to stop?

Under the new vaccine passport system, there is the "known" status of people who are in a bar, restaurant etc. If they are in there, they must have the app and therefore they must be double vaccinated, but you don't exactly have their personal details. Supplying details of name, dob and proof of vaccination seems a step too far in my opinion.

Well, intentionally spread or otherwise, its inevitable. It's been 18 months in the making.

I think the spread is inevitable, virus don't choose which event to spread. As long as you get close, it spreads.

Funny how the media, well at least this morning, is pre-blaming the inevitable spread on the protest and never once attribute the shopping crowd.

Maybe the protesters are assumed to have a higher number of unvaxed than the normal supermarket crowd and don't seem to be doing any distancing.
