Given examples of antivax complainer who have engineered themselves essential border passes.
Its possible that there might be people who were in Auckland at any protest anywhere in NZ.

Not the sort of people to isolate themselves if they get symptoms.
Spreading to their mates is doing them a service.

Some people need to look around themselves and think is this really a group to associate with.
Given the placards we saw.

Any pictures? I need to show them to my antivax associates and find out where they stand on that.

GV27:

Batman: To get to over 80% double vax. Today marks NZ's freedom day, point of no return. Mark your calendars 10/11/21. It's been 18 months in the making.

Thanks 90% of Kiwis.

Technically it was 11:59pm last night - and given the protests and the inevitable spread that will have caused in main centres that don't have Covid, I think the real red-letter day was yesterday.

I don't think 80%  ( unrounded) will happen until Thursday.... (reported on Friday)

As of midnight last night (9th) the DD count was 3,317,182... that's 78.8%... the magic 80% target  of the ,4,209,057 eligible pop is 3,367,245

We are still 50,063 short... on Monday they had 16,089  second doses, even if it rose to 20K doses that would need Tuesday +Wednesday + (a bit on Thursday)

Also Thursday is a statement day, the COVID Press conferences are  Today and Friday ... They will bend the reporting so it happens for  Friday...

Hopefully we find out today what's happening with schools, really sick and tired of this home learning business:

https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/10-11-2021/live-updates-november-10-primary-schools-wait-to-learn-if-and-when-they-can-reopen/

An announcement on whether students in years 1-10 will return to school is due at 1pm today.

The government had earlier signalled that they hoped classrooms in level three areas would reopen on November 15 – next Monday. However, with that date rapidly approaching and no announcements having yet been made, parents and teachers may have a quick turnaround period to get ready.

What a surprise, Destiny Church was involved. Can someone please explain to me any good stuff they do? All the headlines I've ever seen about them are (overwhelmingly) negative.

Not sure where they got it, but Morning TV had it at 23K done yesterday. Presumably some offset super saturday followups

Edit oops. Poss total. I see you are breaking to 2nds

Lease their properties to the govt for testing and vaccination stations? :D

Wait, there's still a negative there. But they (church) pushed it as a positive

Apart from that, what else has Brian done to help mankind though? That's what I'm wondering. (And I thought they only leased one site, anyway?)

Note: lining his pockets thanks to the donations of his congregation doesn't count :D

Its a pity that when we are advised to get vaccinated to protect ourselves, our family and friends, many of us do that. When some are told to get vaccinated to protect ourselves, our family and friends and members of the public and school kids, that's a problem.

I've seen nothing official on the fatal crash in Levin yesterday but understand it was 4 teachers who had been to the protests and were returning home.

Update: on the Herald now. 3 staff from Devon Intermediate in New Plymouth. The school caretaker, a teacher aide and a teacher.

Before face masks, Americans went to war against seat belts
https://www.businessinsider.com.au/when-americans-went-to-war-against-seat-belts-2020-5?r=US&IR=T

In the early 1980s, the public-safety battle was over seat belts. Most Americans didn’t use them, and 65% opposed them being enforced by law.

From my understanding, some people made the argument that seat belts were dangerous, because they prevented you from being "thrown clear" in an accident and they might trap you underwater if the car goes into a river or a lake.

It was quickly pointed out that if you car goes into a river or a lake, without a set belt you have a good chance of being knocked unconscious and would have a much higher chance of drowning, not to mention that the number of road deaths involving drowning was extremely small.

As awful as it sounds, I think coronavirus would have had had a much tougher time of gaining a foothold if it had been around in the 80s or even the 90s.
Think about it - no Facebook, no misinformation easily able to spread everywhere, hell hardly any social media at all. Trump wasn't nearly as influential either (although I concede he was around back then). The virus would have been severely wiped out (or the spread drastically reduced) before it knew what happened, as everyone would have been vaccinated without (or very little of) the antivaxx bs, and it wouldn't have had a chance to spread as far and wide as it did.

Now, everyone on social media is a self-proclaimed "expert" who - despite having absolutely 0 medical experience/credentials have all got their followers who hang on their every word, with their crazy, crackpot theories that "the experts don't know about" or "the Government doesn't want you to know". Even more depressing, some doctors are into it too (I'm looking squarely at the likes of Simon Thornley and his ilk with that statement).

Sad times we live in :(

advanced civilization is a double edged sword.

but people in those days died of other things that they wouldn't die of today.

at the end of the day, everybody dies.
