As awful as it sounds, I think coronavirus would have had had a much tougher time of gaining a foothold if it had been around in the 80s or even the 90s.

Would a vaccine have been made as quickly in the 80’s, 90’s.?

Know the technology has been around for long time, but when it was ready to use not sure.

Thanks found it.  They have edited the question out and only left part of the answer in.

Was something to do with national security.

Reading between the lines of the response, it was something to do with threats to MPs (and presumably the PM ) made by Antivax groups..

Still only 16K second doses yesterday... 33K still needed to reach 80% double dosed,

They might hold off making a big thing about it thou, as if they hang out till early next week they will also hit 90% single doses nationally, (currently 21.3K to go- with 5.8K doses yesterday )

Scott3:

  • Those working in a role impacted by vaccine mandate's, who are unwilling to have pfizer, but are willing to have Astrazeneca. - But will require some kind of consultation to discuss the relative merits of the vaccienes. (director general of health stated that AZ was less effective against delta, and also has well publicised rare side effects).

Will be interesting to see how the latter point goes down. Education & Healthcare mandates kick in on the 16th, but AZ won't be available untill the end of the month.

Suspect for some that getting an alternate brand could be a face saving [for the person] thing as much as anything. Some people have a lot of their identity tied up in being Anti pfizer covid-19 vaccination.

IMO it isn't great that they would need a consultation first as isn' t that just going to put people off either. Australia has used both vaccines, and I think AZ qualifies as a vaccine for people returning from overseas.

Pretty big warning today from the standup for anyone unvaccinated, that it will be spreading throughout NZ by the holidays as Aucklanders will be allowed to travel out of the area.

Under the new vaccine passport system, there is the "known" status of people who are in a bar, restaurant etc. If they are in there, they must have the app and therefore they must be double vaccinated, but you don't exactly have their personal details. Supplying details of name, dob and proof of vaccination seems a step too far in my opinion.

then I guess they will end up buying services from a company that will provide that information and you will lose the customer?

This decision to bring kids back to school with 3 weeks left of the year is just dumb.

The justifications IMO are also crazy and a lot of spin. Isn't it going to be more of a get together than actually doing much work. We wil lhave a lot of unvaccinated children and I remember experts saying that schools could become a reservoir for the virus.   Despite the PM saying that thy expect cases to be 200 by the end of November , where we are probably there now, all his relaxing of the rules IMO is going to cause cases to go up quite a bit, even with higher vaccination levels. We just have to look at Singapore and Europe. Also saw a photo of crazy scene of a crowd of people inside a shopping mall waiting for the store to open, essentially no social distancing and we know how it spreads inside.

Would you be happy having your personal information distributed to various facilities where you have no knowledge about how they are going to use it? How they are going to store it? What protections they have in place to ensure your data is kept confidential?

I am fairly liberal when it comes to many things but a persons right to privacy is getting rapidly eroded in some areas and (based on the herald article about landlords in todays news) is getting stronger in others, completely dependent on who or what the topic du jour is.

But yes, that is the conundrum that employers are currently facing.

Re: @mattwnz

The governments Covid response is a balancing act between health, economic and political. The balance has been morphing towards other areas than health outcomes.

Everything has been baked into the cake, there is pretty much no magic bullets that they can use to solve this problem. There is however a degree of self-preservation, being in government is much more fun than sitting on the other side of the house… which could be a very real risk if they adapted a hard line approach.

Conversely, it’s very easy being in opposition to make promises of opening up (throwing meat to the crowd) when you don’t have to execute those policies.

The request for information seems to be broadening -

Initially, it was letter of undertaking from us that any techs attending a site are fully vaccinated. Marginal in that we are disclosing potentially private medical information to an outside source, but broad enough in my view to be reasonable.

We are now getting requests for proof of vaccination for all staff (copies of vaccination cards, mycovid app stuff etc)

We are also getting this, as well as supposedly requiring names and DOB for each person, under the guise of the Covid vaccine order.

Just where is this going to stop?

I agree, they have no need for this information and should be told as much. It's really not much different to a person holding a professional registration like an electrician or even someone like a paramedic coming on site. No one askes to see their qualification/registration details. You trust that the company they work for has ensured the staff they send are appropriately qualified.

no we were educated with discipline and respect as top priority

vs education now - you can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do and nobody will be able to stop you

and suddenly we are upset at people protesting under that paradigm. you can't have it both ways.

Depressingly (but predictably) scammers are out to make a quick buck off the vaccine hesitant/resistant:

How would you feel if you paid good money to buy one of these useless pieces of paper, only to be told it meant 0 and you were going to lose your job?
