kiwifidget: some consistency would be nice. Man shot dead is counted as covid death, but elderly lady is not.

Some of the statements leading up to your comment are misleading. Bloomfield has clarified the situation already:

RNZ: Bloomfield: "We will be now publicly reporting confirmed deaths as those where the death documents or an investigation has shown that the cause was Covid-19 and we will report other deaths where the cause of death is not certain but the person has Covid-19. We will report them separately, and the latter group will be classified as 'under investigation' while we await further information from clinicians or a coroner's follow up."

DjShadow:

I have a feeling it'll be in Wellington before the end of the month, maybe sooner given Masterton has locations of interest

I wouldn't worry, go with the flow. we've had a good 18 months, it is time we faced it. it'll be alright.

Welll it’s now clear we are rapidly moving to “live with it”... we have an unlinked cluster in Taupo, and no restrictions are being imposed .. we also have LOIs in Masterton... ( but no announced cases yet... ) ....I think traffic lights are coming for everyone soon....

Well they are wanting to allow Aucklanders out for Christmas, and unless it has spread throughout NZ, some people outside Auckland are going to be critical of this. So it makes it a lot easier for the government if it is spreading outside, and the border is far from watertight. I thought they were still following elimination outside of Auckland until vaccination rates were high enough. The logic that is being doesn't make much sense at the moment. Waikato could feel that they shouldn't be in L3 if Taupo isn't due to having unlinked cases.

But experts have warned not to let it become endemic for various reason including mutations. The thing is once it is endemic, are as many people going to get tested, or self isolate for 14 days if they catch it and only have mild symptoms? People don't usually stay at home if they have caught a cold etc. Heard an expert when the traffic system was announced saying they thought that areas would be alert level red for much of the time to control cases.

There are still a lot of people who don't understand we've moved on from elimination to living with the virus. The expectations from so many that Taranaki would go into a lockdown and then the anger from some when that didn't happen shows that plenty of people are confused about what is happening and simply don't realise that Covid will be nationwide by Xmas, if not well before then.

When there are the required vaccination rates. But outside Auckland, elimination, or very heavy suppression, is still being done until vaccination rates are high enough. That is why they put part of Northland into lockdown this week, because it would rip through that area which has low rates and very vulnerable population.

I understand the logic  for Taranaki, or part of it not going into level 3 lockdown, was because they could trace it back to Auckland, and they used the same reasoning as what happened in Christchurch when they had cases that had travelled back from Auckland. Not sure about Taupo cases as I haven't really caught up with that today. But I think the logic behind for what they are doing is starting to wane. IMO the government are not explaining things very well. At least in Singapore, their PM came out a few weeks ago and explained it all very well.

One of the Masterton LOI "Master Fried Chicken Lunch Bar Kuripuni (Sunday, November 7 from 7.45am - 9.15am)"

That concerns me as Master Fried Chicken is closed on Sundays. So what else is wrong with the LOI data.

They're onto it

"SPECIAL NOTE: The Master Fried Chicken date details are incorrect and should be noted as being visited on Saturday, not Sunday. The time of the visit is as stated."

Positive wastewater tests in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui on the 10th and 11th Nov

Oh Bugger.

Well it was inevitable.

Bay of Plentians were becoming complacent though with there masks and QR scanning and hopefully this will be the kick up the bum to push those vaccine hesitant people.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

This is all very well, but with cases currently taking at leat two to three years to wind their weary way through the Coroner's Court, these 'under investigation' deaths are only going to get resolved when the "2020/2021/2022 Covid Outbreaks" are of historical interest only. If we get a surge of unvaccinated deaths from Christmas 2021 through winter 2022 - which seems quite likely :( - the whole coronial system will collapse under the strain.

So the relatives of people who die because they can't get in to ICUs bulging at the seams with unvaccinated Covid patients will have to wait even longer to get a Coroner's verdict.

That's only the start of things to come. People are going to be waiting for longer for any treatment in the public health sector, irrespective of how many non vaccinated people are taking up hospital beds.

Yesterday I heard of someone who had a reasonably acute debilitating but non life threatening condition was told it was at least a two week wait for a Xray when in the recent past it would have been done that day. They were also told they could have it that same day if they wanted to pay for it. Obviously no money in the bucket.
