I remember reading somewhere that last year when coronavirus first started in China, they banned travel within the country but (for some reason) still allowed international travel, until countries started barring passengers arriving from China.

I've always thought that's basically what got this whole thing started. If only the Chinese government had banned all travel back then, even temporarily...things might be different now.

I remember that too, they intentionally allowed something like five million people to travel over the Chinese New Year. They did not seal the border until Jan 23rd.

It makes perfect sense from a strategic pov it prevents a disadvantage, a relative weakening of Chinas position under restriction in terms of the global economy.

Better that we all have Covid and all things are therefore equal.

Conversely after they eliminated the virus they introduced anal swabs.

It is unfortunate that we are such a tribal species. Covid is the perfect mechanism to exploit our inherent selfish gene.

Batman: Australia suspends travel from African countries with Ormicon

https://i.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/300464863/australian-government-introduces-bans-on-africa-travel-over-new-omicron-covid19-variant

Aren't they celebrating opening up? The boy with a finger in the Dyke. Resistance to Omicron is futile earthling. It sounds as though it is seeded widely and set to take over Delta around the world.

Without an MIQ system that quarantines all arrivals, you are wasting your time. And even then it is a delaying step as opposed to a wall of absolute exclusion.

they are slowing down the influx of Omicron. they won't stop it getting in, but it will get in slower than without the measure.

in the fullness of time people will know what they're dealing with.

at the moment it's a new enemy.

No wonder no one is getting tested.

Yeah some measures are better than no measures....Swiss Cheese and all that. It would be a perverse irony if Omicron turned out to be the best thing in the pandemic...less kick than a bout of the Flu and zero asymptomatic cases.

If I could wave a wand and magically alter one thing about Covid, I would remove the A symptomatic infections and therefore take away its evil genius ability to exploit human selfishness.

I didn't realise they eventually sealed their border, but of course with the benefit of hindsight, we can now see that January 23 was far, far, far too late for that action to be of any use (ie, stop the spread of the virus outside of China).

Apparently the preprint paper was retracted, as happens with a number of odd and strange preprints.
Of course by that time the damage is done its been copied and done the rounds of usual suspects :-)

Number 17 on this list, and um yeh it starts with 5G etc...

I see we are closing the country to 9 African Nations from tomorrow night. It is the least we can do for our MIQ staff. They should at least be given a chance to get up to date with their boosters.

A bit of positive news from South Africa but it is still early days.

Hopefully we we have ended up with another variant that has had so many mutations that it's basically broken. Yes it might be more transmissible, but appears to be creating fewer symptoms with many people not even losing their sense of taste or smell. No fully vaxxed in hospital.

Except we aren't. If you're a Kiwi you can still come in. Doh.

I can't believe how slow governments are at making these decisions. Once I was informed of the Omicron Strain I'd have slapped a precautionary ban on travel from anywhere in Africa within ten minutes. Yet they take days.

MIQ works, unless you want to ban Kiwis from their own country. And best include all of Europe and Asia also, add in Middle East as its in Israel at least, and of course all of Africa. And any countries that have had people from those countries recently, example UK etc who now have cases.

In this case, until further information is available, yes I'd ban everyone.
