My very rough calculation put the mean time between MIQ leaks at just 12.5 days... Hope I am wrong on that one.

That's a bit meaningless. You could have 10 escape on the first day, 20 on the second day and using your stat no more for a year.

AFAIK we haven't had any 'escapees' for a while.

And just as I say that we have one today. Thankfully they have so far tested negative.

Traveller taken to hospital from MIQ leaves without discharge

""
A traveller who was taken to Middlemore Hospital from a managed isolation facility at midnight on Sunday has not returned to MIQ.
""

We are too civilized to put out a wanted poster with their details, so that we can all avoid them.

Mine is still incubating their infection after catching in in the hallway, elevator, or that drinking party in room 33.
Which maybe why I needed to go to Hospital. Maybe ?

This. Emirates are running a pretty complete network.

Case numbers are still relatively low in the UAE (285 yesterday in a population of ~10 million) but it’s one of the few ways to get back from Europe.

Cases have shot up though, last week they were 65 a day.

In the last three days we have had:

  • 16 via UAE

  • 2 via or from Singapore

  • 1 USA direct (not counting the one from the USA that went via UAE)

  • 1 Fiji Direct.

Would that be representative of actual travel volumes at the moment?

I don’t know but the point of origin for the “UAE” flights was more than likely Europe. That’s generally more significant than where they are transiting through.

I wonder if they used the old prison trick, faked an illness...''I have chest pain'' because MIQ is staffed by Nurses and a Doctor, so they can contain people in place who have non critical illness to preserve hospitals from exposure where unnecessary...as we have seen they have had people vomiting and being incontinent with high fevers from Covid so.....

As this is a new significant wave, caused by a new variant overseas, I wonder if they will be reducing the volumes coming in , in order to reduce the risk to it leaking out and reducing the risk to NZers. I recall they did this previously by reducing MIQ capacity, in part for isolating people in the community with covid. It does seem that the percentage coming in with covid is now increasing, and it is mainly this variant. They do have to quickly pivot when conditions change to reduce the risk to NZ.

MIQ room release postponed.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-mbie-delays-miq-room-release-due-to-omicron/SADEH4DJ2GQ5AWEHIA2J2JKMOU/

Reason given is longer average stays impacting on capacity (I think everybody on the same flight, or MIQ floor as an omicron case does the entire 10 days in MIQ, rather than the normal 7 in miq, then three of self isolation.

It will also be a great relief to the staff.

While we sit here in Disney Land imagining Omicron is not here, people like you and me are suiting up at work to roll around in Omicron air for hours in a day and getting paid a pretty average wage or salary for it.

When you work in health, and there is a crisis, too often the on call manager or the day team will say something daft to the troops like...we are going to get busy and this will be tough...can anyone suggest ways to manage the load better?

And the answer will be staring management in the face, slow down the flow, redirect at the border, restrict entry, give staff a realistic chance to do the job without rushing anything...we are talking a world where micro mistakes bring down a country,

They were going to have to do something. I wonder if they will go back to 14 days MIQ as we can't afford to let Omicron in until people have their boosters.

The Other likely not mentioned reason is that that people will say it was unfair they were not able to apply for an MIQ spot, that they will need post Jan 17 to get home from Oz when the ability to just self isolate is cancelled today..

What ever decisions were made at cabinet yesterday are now known by the head of MIQ, it would be totally unfair to hold a room allocation at 11am today when you know the rules will change at 2pm...

From The White House:

Today, Dr. Walensky will give an overview of the state of the pandemic and on new practices that will help keep schools open, and Dr. Fauci will provide an update on the latest science and the importance of boosters.

But before we start, I want to talk about how we should think about this moment.

As we’ve explained in prior briefings, the Omicron variant is more transmissible and our medical experts anticipate it will lead to a rise in cases.

But unlike last winter, we now have the power to protect ourselves.

Our vaccines work against Omicron, especially for people who get booster shots when they are eligible.  If you are vaccinated, you could test positive.  But if you do get COVID, your case will likely be asymptomatic or mild.

We are intent on not letting Omicron disrupt work and school for the vaccinated.  You’ve done the right thing, and we will get through this.

For the unvaccinated, you’re looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm.

So, our message to every American is clear: There is action you can take to protect yourself and your family.  Wear a mask in public indoor settings.  Get vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated, and get a booster shot when you’re eligible.

It seems they have had enough with the bullshit of anti-vaxxers and "I will take the vaccine if I really have to" kind of stupid people.

Our booster rollout is about as slow as our initial vaccine rollout. With the big reduction in vaccination locations over the Xmas period there are even going to be further restrictions on this. We don't get our actual booster shipment until March so would possibly face some constraints if we decided to bring things forward, but the reality now is vaccines are plentiful with a huge over supply in the market.

Omicron will here soon regardless of whether we want it or not, and even lockdowns aren't going to stop it.

The alarming thing is that Omicron is now in 89 countries. Why has full MIQ not been introduced again given many people have tested positive after arriving to MIQ despite being double vaccinated and having a negative PCR test prior to departure. It's the most transmissible version yet. The whole wait and see thing isn't going to end well.

i'm not alarmed. i mentioned earlier that on Friday One news interviewed a kiwi Professor in Melbourne, he said if omicron is super infectious and very mild, then we have a way out of the pandemic by infecting everybody with omicron now and that'll be the end of covid.

obviously it needs to be mild ... so ... who knows.

the next day you have the harbinger of doom from Auckland telling us we're doomed we need to shut the border etc.

i'm choosing to look out the window and not think too much and let it all play out, we have people paid to sort us out ... bad news for their holiday though

Taiwan, mostly holding things at the border has upped testing due to hotel cross infection.

Arrivals to be tested six times for virus
https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2021/12/18/2003769789

""
People arriving in Taiwan are required to have six COVID-19 tests within the first 22 days of their arrival, as part of new COVID-19 prevention measures adopted in response to a cluster infection at a quarantine hotel, authorities said on Thursday.

The requirement applies to all arrivals between Tuesday and Feb. 14, regardless of their vaccination status or choice of quarantine plan, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said.
""

Life is pretty much normal apart from masking on transport and enclosed space, though sensible masking is well accepted by population.
Much like Japan where masking is no big deal,
They do have advantage they make their own quality PPE, production being put in place as part of national measures.

Right, now that the Weekend is out of the way, NSW has pushed over the 3000 daily case mark today,

Hospitalisations are also creeping up, 284, which has pretty much doubled in 10 days, ICU numbers have gone from 25 to 39 over the same 10 days....

NZ needs to cancel any thoughts of self isolation for travellers from OZ until this peaks and blow over .   and we also need to put the pedal down on Boosters NOW....
