JPNZ:

On the 3057 cases in NSW today..

...

QLD (86) and SA (154) also now rising sharply, albeit current with lower numbers.

Will be interesting to see if QLD can turn it around this time, as they did with Delta.

Waiting till Jan 2022 is a silly decision in my opinion. We want vaccine boosters in arms sooner rather than later, providing that it’s safe.

I rang up the vaccine line - they’re suggesting mid Jan. Local chemist has been instructed to wait till Jan 1st.

Mid Jan is probably realistic - 3 days to Xmas, then 3 working days later its January. Everyone will be on Holiday.
Deliveries of Vaccines will be held up. Staff on leave etc etc.

In the mean time they can work through all the health workers, elderly etc vaccinated June/July and earlier at the places who are open through-out.

Mid Jan will ensure they can go at full speed when they turn on the taps.
Remember the main roll-out didn't start until September so most people wont be eligible until mid Jan onwards anyway.

And it sounds like if your Chemist is starting 1st Jan then for those who want to find a way to be boosted slightly earlier they will.

We still want to boost those who got their vaccination earliest thou

Giving those who were jabbed early ( likely essential and the elderly) is still our best approach, so I'm happy giving them a couple of weeks to get boosted before millions more become eligible,

As at the end of June there were ~500K ppl fully vaccinated, so far only ~220K are boosted, lets see if the rates kick up from the ~10K a day now...

I was in one of the earlier groups. By kicking it out, it means that I’m going to get my booster later compared to if they didn’t change the booster rules.

"Prime Minister Scott Morrison has reiterated that Australia will not return to lockdowns as coronavirus infections rise across the country, insisting that “the time for that heavy-handedness is behind us”.

Speaking at a press conference in Queensland this morning, Mr Morrison said a “strong recommendation” to wear masks in indoor settings was “very sensible” but added that “Australians don’t have to be told by governments how to live”.

Tantamount to being an anti vaxxer

I think he has always been against the lockdowns which states imposed, yet he will probably take all the credit for them saving lives..

Guessing he hasn't been watching what is happening in UK. They think Dec 28 could be the lockdown day for the UK.

DS248:

Wonder why the deferred start (Xmas off for vaccinators?).  Underway before the 5-11 rollout would seem to have made sense.

I think that would be a fair assumption.

Many of the larger vaccination centers are closing down for a period (for example the large Mt Wellington vaccination center is closed from noon on the 23rd of Dec to the 9th Of Jan).

Opening up a additional two month band for boosters will result in a lot of load on the vaccination facilities for the first week or two. Pritty harsh on GP clinics & Pharmacies to face this extra load while the high volume vaccination centers are shut down... Also we want the entire vaccination system to not be overloaded. Don't want somebody getting one of their primary doses to be unable to access get their dose due to overcrowding from people getting boosters. For equity reasons, primary doses need to be the absolutely priory.

On the positive side, this gives the opportunity for those who have passed 6 months, to beat the rush, and get in now.

On the negitive side, this decision will look very bad if we have an omicron community outbreak in the next few days.

[edit]

Previously mentioned that a nurse that works at the Mt Wellington vaccination center has advised that they (and other large centers - not pharmacies) are currently giving boosters to people at 5 months plus. A friend got their's this afternoon (not yet at 6 months), verifying this online info. Given today's announcement, there is a good bet [unverified] they and the other major centers are offering from 4 months now, if anybody is in a rush to get boosted.

Maybe it's just me but I don't really understand what you are saying. At the moment boosters are at 6 months which you can still get. So I cannot see how a change to 4 months in January is going to delay you getting the booster if you are due soon.

You should still be able to get your booster as soon as your six months is up?  So timing not affected?

I got my first dose in June but because the gap to my second one was 8 weeks, I will not be able to get the booster until they reduce the time gap down from 6 to 4 months.  Could be a problem for me as I potentially have work related travel o/s mid-Jan - Feb ...  Be good if can get it done at a chemists from start of Jan.

Self isolation from mid-Jan from OZ now pushed back to end of Feb,

I'm surprised they have announced this now. They didn't need to yet. They could have advised caution and flagged the possibility of rules changing for those booking travel, but we're going to have much better data on Omicron virulence well before the changes come into effect.

If Omicron gets into the community anyway in the next couple of weeks (which I think is a very real possibility) then it's all pretty much moot.

I think they should have made this call a week ago. But I support the announcement today.

It's under 4 weeks to MIQ free arrivals were due to start. Some people will have already traveled. The last thing we want is large number of New Zealanders to take Aussie holidays, and require re-repatriation, expecting a free return window, or MIQ priority like they got when the Aussie bubble burst.

It it turned out to be the wrong call (say we have omicron here before mid jan), the government can all-way's bring the date forward. Fine to do that last minute, unlike applying a long delay.

So yesterday, I could book an appointment in early January under the 6 month rules.

When I’ve gone online today, all appointments have been removed. When I’ve called the 0800 number, I’ve been told that all booster shots must be booked and that I can only schedule my booking for mid-late January which is even later than what I could have booked under the 6 month regime.

Suggest you just walk in and get in when you hit the 6 month mark.

Today's press conference as already disused:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8boMQPJFOQ

Largely as expected:

  • Kick the can down the road regarding MIQ free arrival from aussie
  • Slight tighting of MIQ (change from 7MIQ + 3home) to 10 days MIQ.
  • Plan to keep Omiricon out "as long as we can", but not resorting to extreme measures like a block on all arrivals, meaning a leak is expected.
  • Plan to use "Red" in the protection framework, rather than alert levels to manage Omicron in the community, unless it gets too badly out of hand.
  • Kiddy (5 - 11) vaccines from 17 Jan. Getting enough doses to not need a priory system to allocate them, but there is going to be a big, early push to resource those in low vaccination / high hesitancy areas to get good reliable information from trusted sources to parents, so they can make an informed decision.
  • Boosters to 4 months in early Jan.

Probably the biggest news is the use of "red" to manage an omicron outbreak. Red isn't going to be enough to hold omicron back, so this is pretty much a let it rip strategy. Big change from our past approach.

No need to even wait if you have access to transport. Friend got her booster at 5 months something at the Mt Wellington vaccination center today.

They are not enforcing that requirement to book boosters. In fact, Chris Hipkins said today that initially boosters would be via walk in while they are sorting the booking system out for the new spacing.

Aligning the earlier booster rollout with 5-11s also allows more people to  do the  "Jab me and my kid together please"

Kids will see their parent get a shot first which helps with their anxiety...
