India is a huge anomaly here with only 156 cases and 3 deaths to date.

WHY❓

Or this a slow burning fuse 💣

Quite simply, they don't have the resources to provide first world style testing, tracking, and treatment. Inevitably this disease will circulate widely in undeveloped countries, and we will never know the true numbers of cases or deaths.

Just visited paknsave tauranga.  A few products looked a little low in stock, but we could do the usual shopping just fine.  Busier than usual , but not too bad. I guess they had all the checkout lanes open (never seen that before) which probably helped.

Interesting, most of the flour had sold out -- why so? In their isolation people want to bake cakes ? Or make bread?  I'd have thought pasta is a better bet.

It's the same at Rotorua, no flour and i wondered why as well , the same with sugar people were walking out with 3-4 5 kg bags what are they going to do with them.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

there's another explanation.

in developed countries, every minor and serious illness gets a lot of treatment to keep people alive for as long as possible. hence you have people who have illnesses and succumb to this virus quite easily.

in undeveloped countries, you are alive because you don't have a serious health problem. from the moment you are born, if you have something that is treated in western countries, you just die of it because the treatment is not available there. as you grow up, the moment you have a serious health issue you go downhill pretty quickly, and then you die. no, you don't get vaccinated, you get measles. you can't survive measles you die. when you have pneumonia you don't go to hospital, you go to work for US1/day. if you don't survive that, you die.

these people are selected to be stronger than western countries by default. it is possible that the virus is just another cold to them. and as usual, if you don't survive that, you die. like you do from any other treatable condition that you don't have a chance to seek treatment for.

Again, I agree that the sporting event is unimportant. But the dependencies on it are important, to many many people.

I wonder whether your willingness to sacrifice the jobs and incomes and homes of many of those people is matched by your willingness to make similar sacrifices? Personally, I'm not ready to go there. And I expect the Govt to manage things so that I won't have to. So I'm not willing to destroy those peoples' lives if it's not necessary.

There's a spectrum which ranges from "a little economic damage as possible" to "as few deaths as possible". Different people have different opinions about where we should sit on that spectrum. The challenge for the authorities (in all countries) is finding actions to land at an optimal point - few deaths and little economic damage. Unfortunately this virus is proving to make any intermediate point difficult to find.

I don't believe that's the case. If anything, untreated chronic disease (acquired or non-communicable) and malnutrition will reduce an individual's chance of fighting off a novel pathogen.

possible but i'm not so sure. some can drink cow dung for breakfast and (presumably) have no ill effects. i'm not sure if it says something about the robustness of the bodies.

They may have calculated that it's cheaper to buy flour and eggs and make your own pasta. I can also attest to the fact that making pasta is time consuming and may help kill some time while you're in isolation.

I would be interested to know what the best day/times to go to supermarkets,to avoid crowds of people. Last time I went a few days ago, the queues at the tills were to the back of the store. Things that were low on the shelves were pasta and flour.

In my experience, first thing in the morning is quietest. Even better if your supermarket opens at 6 a.m. A lot of people just don't like getting up early.

If you are at home with children baking a cake together is a good way to pass a bit of time. Also you get to eat cake. In New World yesterday the shelves were bare. Countdown was low on things and out of bread. Having a breadmaker at a big bag of flour helps in moments like that.

3 possibilities -

Either they didn't import any cases - yet

They are genetically immune to the virus (highly highly unlikely - you would still have a proportion that would be affected)

They are not testing and no records of death are being taken

Quite likely the last one. Same with south america and africa - though because of the vastness of the south american and african continent it may take a while for the virus to do the rounds

Agree

Also, China and India aren't the best of mates so not a lot of cross transport would go on there

I note that with today's new cases, they announced they have now been testing people who have flu like symptoms in other areas that may not be connected to travel or travellers into NZ. So we may now start to get an idea if there has been CT occurring.

According to Wednesday's Hansard, we have been testing patients in Intensive Care with pneumonia for some time.

Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern: Can the Minister also confirm that routine testing of patients who are in ICU or HDU—high-dependency units—with respiratory issues are part of the testing regime, which is another way of catching if there are wider issues of community transmission, for instance?

Hon Dr DAVID CLARK: I can confirm that we have been testing, for some time, patients in ICUs with pneumonia.

All negative, no evidence of CT

That is a very Darwinian approach, as I have stated before in this topic, but I agree with you. If or when it gets hold in the lower Castes, even though they have survived to any age through natural selection, then it still will be devastating.

EDIT: spelling - thanks Batman

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
