there's another explanation.

in developed countries, every minor and serious illness gets a lot of treatment to keep people alive for as long as possible. hence you have people who have illnesses and succumb to this virus quite easily.

in undeveloped countries, you are alive because you don't have a serious health problem. from the moment you are born, if you have something that is treated in western countries, you just die of it because the treatment is not available there. as you grow up, the moment you have a serious health issue you go downhill pretty quickly, and then you die. no, you don't get vaccinated, you get measles. you can't survive measles you die. when you have pneumonia you don't go to hospital, you go to work for US1/day. if you don't survive that, you die.

these people are selected to be stronger than western countries by default. it is possible that the virus is just another cold to them. and as usual, if you don't survive that, you die. like you do from any other treatable condition that you don't have a chance to seek treatment for.

i didn't mean to be darwinian, i was just merely stating the facts of how life is in different parts of the world. there are no treatment for anything from the moment you are born for 90-99% of the population in certain parts of the world. you just either survive or die. covid-19 having no treatment is just another normal thing for them.

The New Zealand Government is advising New Zealanders not to travel overseas due to COVID-19, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has announced.

“We are raising our travel advice to the highest level: do not travel,” Mr Peters said. “This is the first time the New Zealand Government has advised New Zealanders against travelling anywhere overseas. That reflects the seriousness of the situation we are facing with COVID-19.

“New Zealanders who travel overseas risk contracting COVID-19. At the same time, health care systems in many countries are under strain and do not have the capacity to support foreigners.”

Mr Peters has also urged all New Zealanders currently travelling overseas to consider returning home immediately.

“Borders are closing. You may not be able to return to New Zealand when you had planned to. You should therefore organise to come home now,” he said.

“If you choose to remain overseas despite our advice, the ability of the New Zealand Government to provide consular assistance may be limited due to internal travel restrictions and the suspension of services.

“Those New Zealanders who are long-term residents outside New Zealand will need to consider their personal circumstances and do what is best for them and their family,” Mr Peters said.

“Those New Zealanders who decide to remain overseas will need to ensure they are well prepared. New Zealanders in this situation should keep themselves safe by following the advice of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and local health authorities. New Zealanders overseas are also encouraged to register on SafeTravel so they can receive important updates on COVID-19.”

“In times of crisis, we will see the best in people, and the worst. To those who say we should not welcome our fellow citizens back to our shores I ask that you put yourselves in their shoes.

“All New Zealanders need to show their compassion for one another. Now, more than ever.”

Saw an explanation on Twitter (didn't mark the link). They said most of the world's trade is done in USD. There is "only" about $3 trillion in circulation worldwide. There is also some $90 trillion in deliverable goods, services, ongoing transactions, assets, etc. Now that everyone is cashing out and liquidating, there is a big shortfall of "real" dollars to pay for it all.

India is a huge anomaly here with only 156 cases and 3 deaths to date.

3 possibilities -

Either they didn't import any cases - yet

They are genetically immune to the virus (highly highly unlikely - you would still have a proportion that would be affected)

They are not testing and no records of death are being taken

Quite likely the last one. Same with south america and africa - though because of the vastness of the south american and african continent it may take a while for the virus to do the rounds

I believe it would be the last one. Few states (like Kerala) have handled and are handling this well, while most states do not. Few friends back home have confirmed this.

Plot below compares growth in cases in US and Italy vs Japan. Day 0 = first day with 150 or more cases (US = 175, Italy = 150, Japan = 157). Two series for US as different values from different sources. Wikipedia give non-repatriated cases only (7,999 for 18 Mar). The https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ data are as at ~23:59 UT each day (9,269 at ~23:40 UT, 18 Mar). Not certain if the 1,270 difference is solely due to repatriated cases, or if there is a time of day difference.

Until a few days ago US was closely tracking Italy (albeit with 5 x the population) but as testing in the US has started ramping up, confirmed cases there are now rising significantly above those for Italy at the same number of days post 150 cases.

Trend for Japan shows what can be done - even if multiplied by 2.5 for population equivalence with the US.

i am led to believe that Japan are not testing so ignore Japan. Believe Hong Kong Singapore Taiwan and South Korea but not Japan.

Public transport is excluded, as it is needed to get people to work and to family. But common sense is needed. Luckily NZ does have a high number of private vehicle use, so that may help with social isolating.

risk is a part of life. you have to weigh up yourself and make a decision on whether it's "too risky".

i know a whole host of people are flying into the country (residents) who are overseas before the planes stop flying. so based on that, I'd say the risk is there. for me the risk is high. but for most people they are told it's safe IIRC.
