This is unreal

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/tennis/300490363/novak-djokovic-receives-medical-exemption-to-play-at-australian-open

Djokovic has always declined to offer his vax status, so IMO he is an anti-vaxxer. Now he gets a medical exemption to travel to Australia for the AUS Open. He is the drawcard, so he gets a free ride while everyone else needs to be vaxxed or have a REAL reason for an exemption.

Lets pray he loses to a qualifier in the first round.

USA hits one million cases reported in one day.

Over the period last week 1 in 100 Americans have tested positive. Biden and Harris will meet today to set Omicron response policy.

Well, after reading so many things wrong with Pfizer, I went and gotten me on the Astra vaccine, as we now have choices. I hope the novavax is released sooner than later so my children can also comply.

The essential services impacts.

Do your food shopping folks and avoid high risk activities during the peaks of waves.

Omicron is better in direct ways, far worse in indirect ways. The silver lining is you have around six weeks to get through a big wave and things rappidly settle down.

Yeah, same here. It also tells me that the vaccination centre is 36 milliseconds away (?!)

Edit: Ah, just saw post above. Gotta wait a couple more weeks, it seems.

Which countries have got through that six week wave so far?  I believe only SA has done so and they are not really that representative.

I did a walk in with my local chemist on the 2nd. A number of other chemists have even rented road side signs to advertise that they’re doing boosters.

With the shear number of walk in places, I recommend using those in the first instance.
On the booster - no reaction except for tenderness at the injection site that has lasted for a few days. My covid record was updated in fairly short order too.

I think I'll probably go to my local chemist for my booster in that case, not far from the vaccination centre I had mine done at.

When can 5-12 year olds be booked in?

I've been keeping an eye on the graph with new cases (7 day average) and hospitalisation in NSW here https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/datablog/ng-interactive/2021/dec/17/covid-19-australia-data-tracker-map-cases-today-coronavirus-tracking-stats-live-data-update-by-state-melbourne-regional-victoria-vic-sydney-nsw-how-many-new-active-case-numbers-statistics-deaths-death-toll

With the last peak a few months ago it looked like two weeks later, the number of cases in hospital was about 90% of of the new case average.  So far with this outbreak, it looks more like 60%.  This ratio might reduce further as presumably omicron will make up an increasing proportion of the cases but it still looks like a very large number of cases in hospital.

NSW seems to be over its Christmas slowdown.
35,000 positive cases out of 109,000 tests.

32% positivity rate and many people can't get tested so who knows what the actual numbers are.

Victoria has hit 17,000 positive yesterday and Melbourne Ambulances are code red so overloaded.

Watching with interest as we are sure to be a month or 2 behind.
NSW supermarkets are finding delivery is impacted with covid cases at the Distribution Centers and in transport having to isolate.

Well we now know the answer.. Current Covid vaccines simply do not prevent infection. End of story.

It is also worth noting that no Australian stare records positive RAT tests (ie there is nowhere to upload them). Positive case numbers are simply way higher than this, but nobody knows to what extent.

At some point the daily testing positivity rate in NSW will be a representative sample of the total population figure with some accuracy.

On today's rate that would be 2.8 million cases. perhaps then, Perhaps.

I see testing is collapsing in QLD as well with mass closures of clinics.

NZ will have to do things radically differently, or perhaps not, maybe we could also just post fake daily figures and go with that, it has worked for America the entire pandemic.
