I'm a bit late to the mask discussion but I've read that the effectiveness of the normal medical masks can be as low as 38.5%.

https://healthtalk.unchealthcare.org/not-all-masks-are-created-equal/

This is so much lower than all the previous figures we've been given for these but it's from a test done by the EPA.
Mitre10 has KN95's but they only have ear loops which seems to be the issue.

I wonder how long it will take the Herald to climb down off its 90% mountain and recalculate the total to include the ~470K 5-11s that just became eligible.... Should be about 85% now by my calculations...

Although it will help on the OWID charts as our eligible pop is now over 90% of the total pop...

If MoH (and the MSM including the Auckland Herald) are going to change their basis of calculation, it won't be until tomorrow, as today's figures are up to 23:59 last night and 5 to 11 year old children weren't eligible until (?08:00?) today

It might make tomorrow's figures interesting!

Brian Tamaki is arrested for breaching bail conditions and attending antivaxx protests, while on a live on a Facebook stream with his followers.

looks like the Judge got really annoyed with him breaking bail conditions and he is in custody for the next 10 days until his next court date, Made my day 😃

CAN WE RECOUNT HOW MANY TIMES HE HAS BREACHED BAIL AND ALSO BEEN ALLOWED TO WALK ON BAIL?

Sure I'm happy that he's finally getting what he damn well had coming but the how we got there really angers me.

Government has said they weren't going to move the goal posts when 5-11's become eligible. (But that was in the context of moving to the traffic light system, so somewhat moot, given we abandoned the 90% target for that).

I'm picking the MOH will do like NSW and report the percentage for 12+, and another percentage for 5 - 11's. Looks better than having the number take a big jump backwards. Of course it is the percentage of total population that is the important value, in terms of harm that can be done by the pathogen.

That should conveniently mean the fortnightly Saturday picnic (protest under his guise naming) is skipped...

Expect there to be a picnic protest about being charged for a picnic protest this week.

There will be  a Govt sting operation necessitated by this man inciting sedition against the Govt.

That will be why he has been left free for so long, so the SIS can monitor him.

The National security agencies in this country issued a security alert about the antivaxx movement, who do we think that will involve as far as communications monitoring?

Who is the leader of the New Zealand antivaxx anti Govt Jan 6th type far right and other anti Govt groups?

Brian Tamaki.

Keep him in circulation, you get a fuller picture of his reach and the connection with people like Steve Bannon through Bannons global far right network.

I am sure the SIS have been alarmed at seeing people doing Nazi salutes, in the same crowd as Patched Head Hunters, and Maori Destiny cult members.

They must have enough intel on him now to put him away for a bit.

I don't have a lot to say about "Bishop" Tamaki except that the courts largely set the pace and boundaries.

My immediate focus is on the Omicron MIQ worker and the community contacts. Its been reported that there are 67 close contacts, 43 have subsequently tested negative... the real question of the day is "what about the others?".
If Omicron does establish a foothold outside of MIQ, its rate of infection could prompt the government to either up the traffic lights, restrict travel or apply level 3 like conditions to avoid spreading uncontrollably.

There is some "good news" about Omicron (glass half full) though...

it looks like with Omicron that harsh restrictions or even restrictions dont seem to matter it will spread like wildfire no matter what you do. England didnt really bother and the results were what you would expect , meanwhile Scotland locked down again and they were even worse than England for cases spreading out of control, basically all any country can do is get everything ready and expect chaos for a few weeks.

With the MIQ case, many of the untested candidates were the passengers on the bus - because of the extra contact tracing time to track those down.

Thank goodness we wear masks on buses. And this person might have been commuting too and form work, in which case they probably wore a work issue N95 mask.

Really we can take great comfort from the household contacts. If they are not sick, then extremely likely no one else will be.

A recent Danish study discussed today in 'this week in virology' (youtube titled 'omicron is evasive' episode 854) in this study, the secondary attack rate (term for the rate that one household member, the first case, will infect others) Omicron was basically the same as Delta unvaccinated households.

So when they looked at comparable households, of unvaccinated people, omicron was not more infectious than Delta.

Which strongly indicates that Omicron is not more transmissible than Delta, rather it is far better at immune evasion in a post vaccinated system than Delta.'

I know a lot of real experts, not the ones we see on telly, have a big problem with omicron being called more infectious than Delta, without checking what is its advantage in spread.

Immune escape is looking to be the cause, not greater infectivity.

One the other interesting findings was that three shots was very strong vs Delta in household contact.

So if enough people get boosted we could certainly bump off Delta.

This idea that omicron is not more infectious, rather it is fitter from an evolutionary stand point, would tend to suggest that excellent health measures, wearing masks, works just as well against omicron as it does vs Delta, the problem being, your vaccine wall is much much weaker therefore numbers will be higher anyway.

However, NSW kept cases to 2000 and under for the Delta wave, before they could get the vaccine wall up....so If I can draw a long bow here....perhaps NZ can do the same with omicron...by wearing masks and not loosening restrictions any further than they are now.

This bit I found quite infuriating:
"It is a sad day for the freedom of all New Zealanders when people cannot gather and be heard in opposition to government policy when they believe it to be wrong and contrary to the good of the people."

Translation: "It's a sad day because I can't grift off of my followers anymore."

Also, re the "freedom of all New Zealanders" comment; newsflash Bri: you don't speak for me.

Having worked in Jails I can say with some confidence he will not be having much fun right now.

The strip search routine would shock a few around here, so I will not go into detail, lets just say it is pretty dehumanizing and demoralizing, a case of needs must.

He will be in the Covid pod.

So he will not have a cell mate. No one to talk to. He will not enjoy being ordered what to do on a daily basis. I would be curious to know whether he agreed to the Covid swabs, if he did, it would say a lot about his desire for self preservation.

He is lucky to be getting a hearing in ten days time, unless of course there is some delay and it has to be deferred.

I cannot say what the Judge will do with him from there, probably release him on a tight leash. No more picnics for him.

He has crossed the Rubicon.

There is some thought which says he is martyring himself for the go fund me and the freedom fighter street cred. Well he would have had an idealized picture of what Jail is like in his mind.

No one can imagine what it is really like until they are in there. Having spent decades locked in security facilities I can honestly say time stops. One day is a long time in a cell with nothing but your thoughts, ten days is an eternity for someone like him. I used to be so ready to go home every night after being in Lock up and craving a shower when I got home.

Most first timers cry on the first night, that part of Shawshank was pretty accurate for people who are not hardened crims or even guys from the street.

If the Judge remands him for a further period and keeps him in custody till his court case, well, lets just say he would be devastated.

Another bunch of dropkicks - if they dare to go near me when I get my boys vaccinated, they will definitely get the short sharp shove (not physical, but not-so-politely told where to go).
