debo: So why are they still pushing scanning in to supermarkets to "keep everybody safe" if they are just going to ignore it? No wonder so many people are losing faith in the government's response to the outbreak.

You don't tell people who are already barely tracing or scanning to do it selectively. You continue to tell them to do it everywhere to keep habit as long as it helps identify other higher risk places too.

More so when it's going to be causing other families to be locked up.

Those 6 kids at a school up north. It's not just those 6 kids and keep an eye on others anymore.

It's 6 whole households stay at home, incl mum dad and siblings for min 5 days until the close contacts go neg.

[edit] on 22,196 tests, so a 3.6% positive rate.

Well were getting back on the 2-3 day doubling path...

Hopefully we will move to phase 2 sometime next week and shift the self isolation time down to 7 days,

Although the wrinkle in that plan is there is still a shortage of RATs to be used to allow Asymptomatic close contacts to continue at work...

So I have a feeling we wont see Phase 2 until after the 20th... by which time we will be well on the way to 5K daily ...

so far on average with every 200 cases we get 2-3 people more in hospital

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Jesus, over 800! I remember in 2020 when the peak was something like 89! I guess those days are long gone now.

981 new cases today. Wow. We're definitely not in "Kansas" anymore.

I just hope the mere fact that Omnicron is coming up against a highly vaccinated population here means it has little impact on fatalities.

I would say we're closer to Kansas than last week!

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

chatterbox:
Geektastic: Here's one from a hotel in Taupo for a booking in 2 weeks:

No cancellation charge will be applied up to 3pm, 30 days prior to arrival. After which, the full cost of stay will be levied for cancellation, modification or non-arrival.
If the hotel has not received prepayment, the credit card provided will be charged the cost of full stay at the time of cancellation policy taking effect.

@Geektastic That cancellation wording alone would prevent me from booking there in the first place. Cancellation policies I’ve usually seen are for up to 6pm the night before or 24 hours. Never seen 3pm 30 days prior. That’s an eternity.

I just spoke to them. Verbatim:

"We don't have a Covid cancellation policy because everyone can travel under Red."

Yeah, but about 20% of the total population is unvaxxed, which is about a million. The virus doesn't know who is eligible or not, it will infect anyone.

According to Prof Baker, the numbers today are probably closer to 10k than 1k. Looks like it is pretty much uncontrolled now, and schools seems to be where a lot of spread is occurring, which is an obvious place. IMO they should be vaccinating in schools, like they do with other vaccinations.  RAT testing is going to be needed to keep up with the testing required.
