the mental health toll of living like zombies and scaring children and adults into anxiety and teens into depression is just as bad as the death toll if not worse.

also the physical collateral damage of people not getting healthcare access for other things - my 10 year old had fever over 40C last month and extremely painful throat and MY GP PRACTICE refused to see him, covid rules etc. did a zoom consult, can't see his throat and the doctor actually said ah probably nothing. i went to another one who would see him, looked into the throat, was bright red and had pus coming out all over and they diagnosed strep throat and gave him high dose antibiotics.

absolutely devastating. could have been my kid.

as you alluded to, being scared of covid now has far greater implications than the covid itself

That's messed up for a paediatric appointment with a GP to not have just run a RAT over him and then seen him once he returned a negative result. I suspect that there's something else going on there other than 'just being scared of Covid'.

Eminently sensible, given your personal circumstances. But then again, you would also avoid crowded indoor spaces, conferences, concerts and bars too. Sometimes the quiet rural life has a lot going for it!

obviously there are differences in policies as I managed to go somewhere else and got treatment.

i have no idea who comes up with these policies.

The fact you were turned away without even so much as a precautionary RAT because it could be Covid for a children's consult is complaint-worthy IMO.

Maybe something I'd have forgiven in the midst of a level four lockdown, but we're almost three years into this thing by now.

On a completely unrelated note - I’ve noticed that some GP’s waive consult fees if they sight a rat test (you also get the official covid negative sms). Not too sure if this is Min Health, DHB or just the local practice policies.

Our local GP said if we believe it is Covid, do a RAT test then it gets charged back to HNZ (Health NZ) and the appointment is at no charge.

Every time you catch COVID-19, your risk of other severe issues starts to rise.

Research is starting to show that with reinfection, your chance of serious issues such as diabetes, mental health issues, and chronic fatigue goes up.

Is the overseas data specific to Omicron given that's what NZ has largely had? Relevant as delta was a different beast and definitely more concerning. Many kiwis would have had 3 vaccinations prior to infection as well which isn't the experience overseas or in most of the world.

My issue with these CO2 monitors is they don't tell you if someone has covid or brewing some other bug. It's a proxy for saying there's lots of people breathing in the same room or poor ventilation. You can probably guess all of that. Also haven't seen any cost benefit analyses. Will be a while before they get every building up to scratch to know if it works. Victoria apparently bought a bunch of purifiers or some equivalent for their schools but haven't seen any results on whether that actually lowered transmission. Unless you get everyone tested and sequence them you actually won't know if the school purifiers worked or if people got covid from another venue, like home or in a car.

We don't really have the money to spend on these types of interventions without proof it reduces transmission to a significant degree that it's worth investing in. And by the time you spend money on all of this we really don't know what covid will look like in 2 years or what other treatments may exist. Vaccination, hybrid immunity, antivirals have all helped immensely to date.

Both myself and my partner are suffering with RSV (she passed it on to me after 7 days) which has similar symptoms to Covid with a heavy cold and a hacking mucus producing cough. We RAT tested a number of times with negative results from Day one. I got so bad with breathing problems and being unable to sleep because of the wheezing noise I visited the Christchurch After Hours Surgery on the weekend.
First thing they did was give me a RAT test and when it showed negative, I finally got to see a Doctor. There was no charge for the consultation because of the RAT test and presumably the Ministry of Health picks up the charge as there are no longer any DHB's.

Managed to avoid Covid so far, but RSV isn't anything I'd wish on my worst enemy. Dr Google says there is no effective treatment for it and at this point there is no vaccination.

Not if you are 76 and on a heap of other medication. Paracetemol is the only relief.

I had very similar symptoms that hit me 4 weeks after I had Covid. I'm not 100% sure it was RSV (I thought a very heavy cough/cold) but the wheezing, endless runny nose and hacking up mucus sure sounds like it. RAT tested negative twice during it as well.

Its been 2 weeks since the week off with RSV and I still have light symptoms, believe me though the week with covid was much worse than this
