The government's response to the coronavirus pandemic is being scruitinised by a Commission of Inquiry.

this 2nd inquiry is nothing more than a soap box for those with an axe to grind to stand on. its just the same as many other things this govt has done sucking up to the idiots of this world.

Reckon eh, just like the ridiculous occupation of Parliament in 2022, that (IMO) was nothing but a case of "what about me" 🙄

Labour will label everything negative as coming solely from conspiracy theorists.

Its a pity that this became so divisive in our country's history, now rather than have a rational discussion / investigation into lessons that could be learned, it will be denial and spin.

For me -

1st lockdown, sure, give it a crack and see if we can evade the worst (and lets face it, for many NZers, it was an additional 4 weeks off work or at least reduced / working from home in what was a pretty good late summer / early spring season. I'd assume most employers took the subsidy, which meant employees should have been paid 80% of normal wages. I know some employers abused this, but I'd hope they are in the minority.

Quarantine measures for overseas citizens / residents  - A little over the top with the MIQ hotels and guards, but then people can't be trusted to self isolate either in their own homes. A lose/lose situation.

2nd Lockdown (Delta?) - Bit of a knee jerk reaction, but extending it for the period they did in Auckland, big mistake number 1

Vaccine Passes and mandates on employers in industries, big mistake number 2 and a fatal one for the party. This was the step that really divided the country, created (unapologetically in a conference by PM Ardern IIRC) dual classes of citizens, cost lively-hoods etc. This is where Labours spin masters will have to earn their keep

As a country we'll be paying back the debts incurred for a long time so we have to try and learn something

We've already had the 'productive' royal commission investigation into what happened, how we did, and how we can improve next time.  The terms of review for this one are much more in the realm of what the cookers and conspiracy theorists wanted and to give them an opportunity to rail against their perceived aggrievances, and have achieved via Winston Peters' pandering to them.  I agree we should be taking opportunities for genuine learning, but a significant portion of what is being reviewed here will fall under the grounds of "Science says we already know these answers".

Yeah, but the  digit that is missing is from the middle,?!?!

Implying that either the data is being hand copied, or there is a really strange mis-match between the two variable definitions....

Rest home notified us that my dementia affected 88yo mum has tested positive for Covid. She has a few days isolated in her room. They almost didn’t bother to test as her symptoms were just a sniffle and that’s as bad as it got.
Not sure we need to continue testing and monitoring now as it seems as widespread as the other common cold viruses and far less severe than influenza or RSV.

What medical research are you using to argue that the flu and RSV are now more severe than Covid 19? Or is this belief based on your intuition?

My issue with minimising, not testing etc. is that it's not the acute phase that worries me, it's the growing evidence of the compounding or chronic impacts of repeated viral infections

Some research:

  • This research argues Covid 19 worsens cancer cases, and that its inflammatory signals reawaken dormant cancer cells.
  • This research argues the cardiovascular complications (e.g. heart attack, stroke) of Covid 19 are numerous and life-threatening.
  • This research argues catching Covid 19 increases your chances of getting diabetes.
  • This research argues the risk of Long Covid is significantly higher when catching Covid 19 multiple times, having severe Covid 19, or being unvaccinated when first infected.

Many people are unaware that catching Covid increases their chances of contracting cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. People can be shocked to learn that just because you had mild, seemingly transient symptoms after catching Covid a bunch of times, you can develop debilitating Long Covid after catching it one more time.

By now most people have caught COVID more than once. The post above smells of fear mongering.
People need to be sensible and stay home when they’re sick.

My take on this is exactly the opposite. We should normalise testing for Covid, Flu, and RSV (combo tests are available now) and then staying home if you're positive. And I mean stay home...don't go to work, or just pop out to the shops or anything similar.

It's all the same virus. Just because you got it as a mild sniffle, doesn't mean it won't knock my entire family of 4 on their asses for 3 weeks by the time it makes its way through everybody.

I don't even care specifically about possible long term effects, or the chance you'll indirectly kill one of my grandparents....I just don't want the god damn flu.
