I usually have no problems with your comments but this is over the top. It's pretty obvious that someone that needs to go to a hospital is not required to stay home. It should be clear enough that this means not going out socialising, having dinner with friends, playing cards, etc.

Sorry, I wasn't aiming this specifically at you. There was a whole series of similar comments, don't go out if over 70, no exceptions, and I happened to quote yours. Jacinda Ardern also said this, no qualification, no exception, and I find that genuinely confusing. Apart from the cancer example, as someone over 70 I am supposed to get a flu jab also according to specific advice from the PM. I have rung my doctor twice and they still don't have it. I am supposed to ring again next week. Obviously I have to leave home in order to have the injection. A better instruction would be don't go out unless absolutely necessary for medical treatment or something like that.

Please stop this. Someone close to me is over 70, has cancer, has to frequently travel to the hospital for essential treatments. There are good reasons why some people over 70 can't stay home.

My partners cousin who is 71, fit & well, is a cancer run driver here in Tauranga/Mount area. Just spoke to her straight after the todays announcement. At the moment this service is still going ahead because you really can not stop treatments mid course.

She is also a "Friend of Emergency Department [FED]" volunteer with the St Johns here in Tauranga hospital, that service has been ceased till further notice.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

A good Samaritan has contacted me offering to do our shopping. She lives in town, we live a long way out, there is nothing but farms between here and there. I appreciate her offer but don't see why she should also have to bear the burden of driving all the way out here just for that. I would be happy to drive to her place and pick up the shopping at an agreed time if left outside. I would be in my car the whole time and have no contact with anyone. Is this acceptable?

Disclosure:

I am a retired medical professional.
I am aged over 70 years - old enough to remember lethal epidemics.
My son specialises in COVID-19 public health management in Australia.

As far as I can see, no-one has yet posted in this thread who is currently in voluntary isolation.

So here goes:

Every single member of my extended family, including myself, located in three different countries (NZ, Australia, UK), is currently in voluntary isolation, indirectly because of COVID-19.

Inlaws, children, and grandchildren, age range from 5 to 85 years.

None of us are ill or have COVID-19, but some of us have been exposed to it, and currently one of us (a young child in NZ) is being tested for it. (The result will probably be negative)

Those of us aged over 70 will probably stay in home isolation for months - we are all fully willing and prepared to do this.

The younger adults and children are isolating for two weeks.

My son, who leads a COVID-19 team, is working from home in Australia, solely because he recently visited New Zealand. There is a certain irony to this. 😕
His team have been rehearsing for remote working for three months.
He believes that it will be six months before he will be permitted to visit NZ again.

The take-home message - COVID-19 deserves to be treated with extreme respect. Remember what happened in Italy.

We've been receiving groceries from Countdown via delivery for many years. We've just received a delivery and many items were omitted due to lack of stock. We used to order roughly fortnightly. This order should have been enough for ~10-14 days. There wasn't even enough supplied for a week. Not even a week's worth of dog food (they supplied one roll)! We're not trying to stock up, just order the usual. Countdown say they've limited orders to a value of $800, but ours was just over $200 and they couldn't supply it. I've just put through an order of some items they didn't supply in this order (just some of them, most couldn't be ordered), and a couple of other basics. The earliest open delivery time slot was for Friday night! Looks like a trip to town early one morning to a New World.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Folks should also check with their doctor if they are on regular medication as to possible implications for your immune system even if you are young. Many medications suppress the immune system even if the treatment is for say a sports injury or inflammation Examples of these are medications like Prednisone (Steroid), Sulfasalazine, Methotrexate. Antihistamines(allergy/Hay fever)
